No joy for Goldie

A lacklustre performance from Goldie Sayers meant that the Belgravian missed out on a place in the javelin final. Placed fourth on the world lists for 2007 with 65.05m, she opened with 55.40m, could manage only 54.78m with her second effort, and finally speared the turf at 57.23m for 9th place in her qualifying group - 18th overall.

"To be honest I did not sleep a wink last night and whether that had something to do with it I have no idea. I just felt absolutely flat and couldn't wake my legs up," she said.

"My legs were so dead and I couldn't attack the line, I feel really tired and I did not have it in my legs at all. I feel I belong in the final with the way I have been throwing all year, but it would have taken a miracle to be in it."

With only two athletes to qualify from each of the three 400m semi-finals, only the very best could afford to hold anything back.  David Gillick was unable to raise his game any further, placing 6th in the second semi with 45.35.

Men. 400m: 6s2 D Gillick 45.37.

Women. JT: 9gA (18 overall) G Sayers 57.23.

11th IAAF World Champs, Day Four, Osaka, Japan, 28 August 2007.

David Gillick close to his best

Only the first three in each heat of the 400m gained automatic qualification to the next round and some big names fell by the wayside.

David Gillick came up against out-and-out favourite Jeremy Wariner of USA in heat 2 but ran well to place 3rd, pushing GBR's Martin Rooney out of a qualifying spot in the process! Gillick's time of 45.35 compared well with his Irish Record of 45.23 set in Berne in May.  Look out for that record going again come the next round.

Men. 400m: 3h2 D Gillick (Ireland) 45.35.

11th IAAF World Champs, Day Three, Osaka, Japan, 27 August 2007.

Phillips 6th in triple jump final

After two rounds Phillips Idowu was lying 4th with 17.07m - that hoped for early "big one" hadn't materialised. Nelson Évora of Portugal nailed the competition with 17.74m in the next series of jumps but the Belgrave man was unable to improve until a last round effort of 7.09m gave him a final position of 6th.

"It was a long day and a long competition and I came into it very positively. After qualifying I thought I had a 17 metre jump in me, but I wasn’t sure how many.

"I was comfortable with my hop and step phase, but I missed the snap at the end. I enjoyed it as a couple of weeks ago I didn’t even know if I would jump at all.

"I owe a big thanks to the doctors and physios as they have helped me so much and without them I wouldn’t have even been out there tonight."

Michelle Carey (Ireland) was unable to make an impact in her 400m hurdles heat, finishing 8th in 57.10.

Men. TJ: 1 N Evora (Portugal) 17.74/1.4; 2 J Gregorio (Brasil) 17.59/0.3; 3 W Davis (USA) 17.33/1.0; 6 P Idowu (GB&NI) 17.09/-0.9 (16.63/0.2, 17.07/0.5, 16.66/0.0, 16.88/0.4, 16.85/1.0, 17.09/-0.9).

Phillips Idowu dispelled fears that he was still injured by leaping into the final with a 17.07m opening effort. 17.10m was the automatic qualifier but Phillips was, rightly, confident that his initial mark would be sufficient and sat out the remaining two rounds.

World Student Games, Thammasat University, Bangkok, 9-14 August 2007.

Bill Laws writes:- Arguably only third in quality to the Olympics and World Championships the World Student Games have just opened in torrid conditions in Bangkok. Strangely the sprint relay takes place on day one and in the cool of the morning the GB team cruised effortlessly into the final as firm favourites. Sadly in a blanket finish they were edged out of the bronze medal spot by 0.01sec with only 0.16 secs covering the first four teams. Belgrave’s Darren Chin ran the third leg and will be disappointed that silverware has evaded the team in this event.

Also competing on day one was William Sharman who cruised through his heat securing third spot for a place in the semi’s. Unfortunately he false started and then dwelt in the blocks ( 0.235 sec reaction time) trailing in last in his slowest time of the year.

In the 200m Darren relentlessly worked his way through four races, setting a season's best in the quarter final and twice equalling his best ever of 21.11, the second time for 6th in the final.

Men's Southern League Division 4 (S), Horsham, 14 July 2007.

Southern League climb back begins

By mustering three-quarters of a team with a mixture of injury returnees, novices and others who have not recently competed regularly in the British League, we raised the standard of this division four match with a liberal dose of performances the like of which are rarely seen in Men's Southern League Division Four (South).  Although nominally a Sutton/Belgrave joint team, only ID Akindele from Sutton joined in the fun.

ID himself looked impressive as he smoothly streaked away from the field in the 100m but stepped into a non-scoring role for the 200 to let in 16 year-old Melvyn Anukam.  Mel's first ever athletic competition resulted in a B 200m win - and as he ended the afternoon in the winning 4x100 team can point to a 100% win record in his short athletic career.  It was great to see Ryan Dinham back in action, winning the A 200m and contributing hugely to both relays; we wish him luck in his late quest to get something out of the remainder of the season.

Two fine runs over 400m came from Ian Deeth, recovering from hamstring problems, and the experience which he passed on freely to young Mel and others was invaluable.

Triathlete and world aquathlon champion Richard Stannard turned out for the 5000m and immediately ran away from the field, lapping runners within four circuits and moving on to overtake the whole field at least once with three laps still remaining.  It required full concentration by the lap scorers and his 15:13-odd was just three seconds outside his best (he has only run one track 5k before) and was almost two minutes faster than the second man across the line in our match.

James Kelly demolished the 1500m line-up with Mark Humphrey piling up points with season's bests in the B 1500m and A 800m. New man Kwesi Menyah did some useful triple jumping and Cameron Johnston's 4.40 pole vaulting, backed up by Louis Samms was a tonic in the jumps department.

The throws were good too, thanks to veteran Chris Privett, ubiquitous trainee team manager Michael Peacock and James Everard, who was surprisingly beaten with a last round throw in a high standard javelin competition.

A couple of hurdlers, a distance man or two and some high jump competitors, and we could have romped this match. It won't always be like this of course, especially when BAL and MSL matches clash and we have less hands available for transport, etc., but our climb back up the Southern League divisions began here at Horsham.

BMC Nike GP, Watford, 30 June 2007.

Conditions were warm and fairly still ... but the rain was incessant and large fields in these conditions resulted in a couple of spills.  Catherine Bryson went down while attempting to move up the field in a 1500m and there were bodies all over the place in the men's A 1500 where Neil Speaight was unaffected and moved powerfully over the last 200 to show that he is slipping into top form.

The rain was at its heaviest for the UKA 10,000m championship. With the field clipping along at 28:45 pace, Mark Miles didn't look comfortable, and came out after halfway.  Darren Gauson, with some good US times under his belt also had a bad day, feeling drained, and left the track on the final turn of his 1500m.

Jumps Fest, Birmingham, 30 June 2007.

Julie Hollman seems to be in great form just one week ahead of her appearance in the European Cup Combined Events Super League; she won the long jump with ease.

Having won the high jump with 2.25m, equalling his outdoor best, Samson Oni was unlucky to fail narrowly at the World Championships entry standard of 2.30m. He had competed in Denmark the previous day and said, "It’s all part of my preparation to jump twice in two days, hopefully, in Osaka."

There was a move to take the pole vault indoors but Joe Ive was adamant that it must take part in the rain.  "Will they hold it indoors if it's raining in Hungary at the European U23 Champs? I don't think so." His winning 5.15m in these conditions, where some vaulters were having difficulty holding onto their poles, was good ... but he went on to make a seriously close attempt at 5.35m.

European Champion Clubs Cup Group A, Albufeira, Portugal, 26-27 May 2007.  Full results

Opposition a bit tasty in Albufeira

Bill Laws writes:- Belgrave’s ninth incursion into Europe for the men’s Champion Clubs Cup turned out to be more traumatic than any of the preceding fixtures. Travel problems played some part in a generally lack lustre overall performance and several athletes who were opening their season paid the price for lack of earlier competition. Only peak performances had much hope of producing good points when virtually every event had a sprinkling of Olympic finalists.

The team had travelled out on two flights. The first one was early and meant the team mustering at 4.30 am while the second afternoon flight was delayed six hours resulting in part of the team arriving at Faro Airport after midnight and arriving in Albufeira at 1.30am on the first day of competition. Such are the joys of travelling on a Bank Holiday weekend.

The local weather conditions for the first day of competition were warm but windy with headwinds down the home straight of up to 3.7m/s. The sprint times suffered accordingly and the longer races became tactical with results being decided by the fast finishers. At this level there are some really quick men in the track races and it was a lesson to all to see how some of our men who prided themselves on being a bit tasty were blown away by the awesome finishing speed of the other team’s athletes. Lessons learned and back to the drawing board for many.

Our two wins were on the track with William Sharman getting the photo decision following an apparent dead heat with Luch Moscow’s Borisov. Later William led off our victorious sprint relay squad. Chris Lambert went off fractionally early, checked but took the baton in zone. Darren Chin timed the next handover to perfection and Wade Bennett Jackson entered the home straight with a clear lead. Easing over the last ten metres and looking left he was almost run down by the Luch Moscow’s fast finishing Yepishin who was on his right and had earlier finished third in the 100 to Wade’s fifth placing. Still a win is a win and the squad celebrated accordingly.

We had predicted 35 points on day one and ended on 34 with just 6 points covering the bottom four teams. We then predicted 38 points on day two which, if achieved, would have taken us halfway up the table. But as events unfolded we managed to glean only 22 more precious points and finished up in the relegation spot to Group B.

There were some notable achievements including three pb’s.  Chris Gearing finished the shot with a new best of 17.90m to gain an excellent fourth place in exalted company. Neil Speaight ran a lifetime best in the 3000m the day after finishing fourth in the 1500m in which local hero, sprint specialist and Olympic bronze medallist Rui Silva could only manage second. And finally triple jumper novice Gary Wilson leapt a windy 14.57m  competing for the first time off the 13m board. So a big day for him with lots more to come.

The positives we take from this are that a number of very young athletes gained experience at the highest level. They all came through it well, and have been inspired to move on to greater things. We wish them well.

On the negative side we were disappointed to see other teams with full quotas of high scoring foreign athletes. One team had signed a South African athlete 10 days earlier and had got over the rules by making him a citizen with dual nationality. Their National Governing Body had totally different rules on eligibility from, say, those of UKA. Until the EAA gets its rules tightened and properly policed these Championships will not be on a level playing field.
