PBs in Ribble Valley 10k
Two Belgravians managed to prise
themselves off the sofa and away from post Christmas inactivity to
race in the fast and furious Ribble Valley 10k at Clitheroe.
Both set personal records to end the year on a high. Mark
Pollard placed 10th in 30:47 while Pete Willis was 20th
in 32:28. Well done boys!
Among the finishers was the legendary Ron Hill of
Clayton le Moors, now an M70 and clocking 50:46.

South of the Thames Champions
After a close race
Belgrave Harriers were declared the new holders of of the Dewar
Shield as team winners of the South of Thames Cross Country
Championship. The Bels scored 76 points to Herne Hill's 88 and
Aldershot, Farnham & Districts' 166. At twelve to score for the
Coleman Cup it was also close - Belgrave 444 to Herne Hill's 486.
Russell Dessaix-Chin, pictured left, was the individual
winner and joining him in admiring the Shield are Knut Hegvold,
Will Cockerell and Malachi Byansi.
Many thanks to all Belgravians who helped to organise the race on
our home course on Wimbledon Common.

European Cross Country Champs
On a day when every member of the British team
went home with a medal, the two Belgrave runners must have been a
little disappointed to be out of the scoring four in each of their
races. The going was soft in the Parc de Laeken, Brussels,
cutting up as the programme unrolled. Blistering starts were the
hallmark of all of the races.
After tussling with Britain's number one junior David Forrester in
the trials, who placed 5th here in Brussels, Nick Goolab
picked up a chest infection in the few days before this race and was
not at his best. He was
off the pace at the start of the under-20 championship and in spite
of a rally at the end of the first lap couldn't really get going and
slipped back to place 65th. But with luck, and still in the same age
group, he'll be back next year.
A very positive start came from Phil Wicks in the senior
men's race. Phil was lying 31st as the first 1k lap was
completed, ahead of team mates Skinner and Overall and close behind
Tickner and Merrien. He continued in the mid to late 30s for the
next 4.5k but drifted into the 40s over the last two circuits,
finishing 45th. How well Phil has done, considering that he picked
up an injury during the World Cross in March; an injury that kept
him on the sidelines all summer and curtailed his training even
until very recent times.

Victory 5
Sunday 7 December. Conditions were perfect for the Victory 5 miles
race at Portsmouth. Russell Dessaix-Chin set the pace from the off and the rest were content to
sit in. Three miles came up in 13:36 (a pb for Russ) where he pushed
on to start the break away. As late as 800m to go Mark Warmby
was still only 20 metres down but the damage had been done and he
couldn't bridge the gap. Russell increased his lead to 10 seconds by
the finish to win in 22:54. But sadly a mistake had been made
by the marshals just after the start, resulting in the field
sticking to the athletic track before leaving the arena when they
should have been on the surrounding cycle track. The result was that
the overall distance had been reduced by 65 metres (11 seconds at
Russell's pace), the shortfall being accurately measured after the
race by the organisers. Mark Warmby (Newham & Essex Beagles) was
second in 23:04 and Ben Tickner (Wells City) 3rd in 23:17.

European Championship Trials
Great news from Sefton Park,
Liverpool, setting for the European Championship
Trials in cold and miserable conditions with the
temperature barely crawling above zero.
In the under 20 race Nick Goolab ran so well
to place second to St. Helen's David Forrester.
Many commented on how confident Nick looked in his
running - and he'll still be eligible for this age group next
winter.
Phil Wicks and Russell Dessaix-Chin
lined up in the senior men's race over 9.8k.
Russ (who placed 17th) tells us that he has never
felt so cold or been in so tough a race - but that's
what he's in the UK for - to learn as much as he can
about cross country running. Up with the leaders
over the first lap, Phil Wicks, took up the pace on
the second circuit in an effort to break things up.
It worked to a certain extent and he was well in
contention in a slightly smaller leading group for the
final
lap, holding on for sixth place while
struggling to stop himself from
"heaving" over the last 300 metres.

Justin
Chaston medals in Masters' International
A lot of water has gone
under the bridge since Justin Chaston's Olympic appearances
as a steeplechaser and countless runs in club colours, but the man
is still mixing it at the front end of fields in endurance events.
At Swansea he competed in the British Masters' International Cross
Country Championships over 8k in the M40 age group - and came away
with 3rd place after a hard fought race. Justin, racing for
Wales, held second place early in the contest and was secure in
third for most of the second lap but finally had to hold off a fast
finishing John Downes (Ireland).

The Belles are back!
A turn around in fortunes saw Belgrave's women's team rise to the
top of the results board in match two at Lightwater. The
Belles scored 92 to South London's 106 and Herne Hill's 112 and
this moves them to second in the League behind South London
Harriers. Led home by Sarah Murphy in 6th place, the Belgrave
team was completed by Zoe Vail, Anne Hegvold, Tilly
Heaton and Vicky Goodwin.
A very wet Wimbledon Common was the scene for Hercules Wimbledon AC's hosting
of the
second "Sweatshop" Men's Surrey Cross Country League race of the
season. Individual winner was Belgrave's Russell Dessaix-Chin - just a couple of weeks short of being eligible
to score. The league is a two horse race with just a few
points between Thames Hare & Hounds, who have won each of the races
by a whisker, and Herne Hill Harriers; but the Bels now have a chance of
moving into 3rd.

D.J.
(John) Hall President of Belgrave Harriers 2008/2009
John Hall joined Belgrave Harriers in 1971 and soon
became a scoring member in walking teams and has done so ever since
- far too many to mention.
He has competed on a regular basis since then not
only in Belgrave colours but Middlesex (and for a brief spell,
Sussex) and Civil Service, turning in some meritorious performances
over all distances from the one mile at Crystal Palace to the London
to Brighton.
In his county of Middlesex he has won more titles
in a single event than any other athlete and was the County
President four years ago. He has probably won more athletics medals
in Civil Service championships than anyone else, having picked up a
few running team medals as well as being “in the frame” in track and
road walks since the mid-1970’s and having regained the track title
this year. He has been a vice-President of the Civil Service
Athletic Association for many years and has recently been made
Vice-President of the Southern Area of the Race Walking Association.
Regrettably National Team medals do not fill his
wall but this year he was able to add the National 50kms to his
tally.
He has competed with honour at international
veterans meetings in recent years, the highlight being victory in
the M55 20k walk at the European Veterans Championship in 35 degrees
Celsius heat in Poznan, Poland in 2006.
John served on Belgrave Committee in his younger
days but since moving to Enfield fills his time supporting the local
allotments and is now Chairman of the Friends of Enfield Playing
Fields, which has lately involved him in trying to save the Donkey
Lane athletics track.
In his spare time he has been walking secretary
for Middlesex County for over 10 years, for the Civil Service for
over 30 years and has now added the British Masters Athletics
Federation walking duties to his portfolio.
He is the Secretary to the Department for
Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Athletic Club, which he founded
over 20 years ago, despite having retired over three years ago from
the Civil Service after 34 years of toil.
What other spare time he has is taken up with
walks in the Lake District and Scotland, being an expert on
“Munros”, a regular in the Tanners Hatch Marathons and a member of
Saracens rugby football club. He has supported Belgrave at many
National League meetings over the years and recalls being at the
promotion match when the Bels at last achieved British League
status.
John has just been elected onto the Race Walking
Association Judges Panel and has been a Life Member of Belgrave for
many years.

Back to earth at Mansfield
Belgrave performances at the National Cross Country Relay
Championships at Berry Hill Park match the switchback terrain: one
year up and before you know it another one down. With many men
missing for one reason or another we were down to only three regular
front liners being available with one more man being pulled in to
face up to the speedsters either on first leg or last. Paul
Freary drew short straw, he opted for first leg and our aim was
a final place in the top ten.
A position of 75th after one leg made it "interesting" but Stephen
Sharp then came up a staggering 41 places, followed by Nick Goolab
another 17 and finally master-blaster Phil Wicks, full of
head cold but running 8th best on the day as he took the Bels into
7th.
If we'd front-loaded the team, which was always a possibility, we
would have set out on the last leg in first place. Would we
have then placed 7th? Who knows?
The race was won by Bedford & County AC who thoroughly deserved
their success with Newham & Essex Beagles and Morpeth Harriers & AC
completing the medal line-up.
Severely windy conditions, particularly on the highest part of the
course slowed all times considerably.

Road Runnin g, Cross
Country and more
Simon Jones abstained from the post 6-Stage Relay celebrations and dance-off
in "Brummy-town" ... saving himself for the next morning's Cardiff Half Marathon
where he ran 67:48 to beat Kenyan John Murithi by getting on for a minute.
Murithi went off like a rocket to grab a big lead but he suffered in
the wind and when Simon went after him at 8 miles and then hammered
the last mile or so, the African had no answer.
Elsewhere on the Sunday morning, after
singing and dancing in Reflex 'til the early hours, some of Simon's team
mates were slowly rousing themselves, having slept on floors and
spare beds in the Skipper's house. Skip himself was feeling a little
fragile ... "I don't think it was the drink, Maria, ... it was just
that the music was too loud ..."
At the Cabbage Patch 10 miles, veteran
Knut Hegvold was first Belgravian home in 7th place - 53:50 - and
Birhan Dagne placed second in the women's race with 57:55.
In the Wimbledon Audi 10k, Hassan
Raidi was first across the finish line in 31:19.
Dan Mulhare had to miss the
relay to race in the Jerry Farnon 5 miles cross country event in
Ireland as part of the lead-up to the Euro Cross. He was so
inspired to see on our website that the Bels had won without him
that he ran a great race on the Sunday to place 5th, coming home
ahead of a couple of guys who were on the Irish senior team at the
World Cross in Edinburgh.

Russell sets new Club figures for the Belgrave Bolt course
The low key Belgrave 5k Yacht Handicap enabled Russell Dessaix-Chin
to let rip around the roads of Wimbledon. On the accurately measured
circuit that is also used for the Belgrave Bolt/Surrey County 5k,
back-marker Russell set out no less than fifteen and a quarter
minutes after the first runner had been let loose yet got through to 5th
place, just 11 seconds off the win. His time of 14:49 took 20
seconds off Phil Wicks' club best for the course - and was
only 2 seconds slower than the all time best set by Thames Hare &
Hound Phil Sly when winning the Surrey race in 2004.

Aldershot Road Relays
The Men's 2008 SEAA 6-Stage Championship at Rushmoor Arena was a
hugely exciting race. Bedford, Beagles, Basingstoke and Aldershot
all served time at the front of the field but at the end of getting
on for two hours of racing it was the Bels who took the victory,
notching up a sixth win in the event over the past
seven years. The B squad also excelled to place 22nd giving us the
chance to field two teams for the National Championship at Sutton Coldfield on October
18.
Dan Mulhare (left) was a revelation. His storming 17:58 on stage four largely
negated Andy Vernon's push for an Aldershot victory, leaving Steve
Sharp and Phil Wicks to do the tidying up. Phil is still
only operating at around 75% but nevertheless ran his best ever time
for the course - 17:41 - to go third fastest of the day and second
on our all-time list, sandwiched between Mark Miles and
Marty Dent. Dan goes straight into the list at number six.
With six more men to come into the reckoning for the National,
who'd be a selector!

"Jack" Brown 1925-2008
Belgrave Harriers regret to announce the death of John "Jack" Brown
who passed away on 24 September in his 84th year. He had spent
his last years in a nursing home.
"Jack" became a Belgravian in July 1942 at the age of 17 and became
a fierce middle and longer distance runner right through to the
early 1960s. His best 6 miles time was set in 1955 - 29:54.8 -
and he ran 13:52.4 for 3 miles in 1956. In his later veteran years he
became a member of Cambridge Harriers. A fuller appreciation of
Jack's career will appear in due course.

Phil Wicks 3rd in
New York
The 26th Annual
JP Morgan Chase Challenge
Final was held in New York over the standard 3.5 mile
course and saw a fierce race. The South African Transnet Rail
Engineering team retained their title for the fifth consecutive year
- but the Africans were challenged for the individual honours by
Legal & General's (and Belgrave's) Phil Wicks.
Phil sat in the pack for the first 2miles but took up the pace going
into the last 800 metres. With 400 metres to go Tshamano Setone of
Transnet and Olebogeng Masire of Goldfields regained the lead with
the former just nipping the win by one second - 16:03 to 16:04 and
Phil's 16:08.
Phil was pleased to be much closer to them than last year in a
personal record for the distance.
Legal & General placed 4th, behind Transnet, Google and General
Electric (Chicago), with their team including another Belgravian in
Tim Chidgey and our old friend Stuart Major.

Ooooh! So near yet so far

Goldie Sayers - 4th with a new British Record
Bels
in Beijing
Belgravians Goldie Sayers and Phillips
Idowu were both in action at the Birds Nest Stadium in Beijing
and both came so close to achieving their dreams.
Goldie narrowly missed out on a medal
in the women's javelin final, the 26-year-old
finishing fourth just 38cm behind bronze medallist
Christina Obergfoll of Germany.
She threw a new personal best and
British record of 65.75m in the first round to take
her into third place and was again over 65m in the
fourth round, but could not quite find the extra
distance required to reclaim third and take the
bronze medal.
And while Goldie was in that
cruellest position, just out of the medals, Phillips
was in and out of the lead twice in the triple jump,
finishing up disconsolate with the silver medal.
He opened with 17.51m to take the
lead and lost it in round two when Portugal's
Nelson Évora
jumped 5cm further. Phillips came back with 17.62m,
a season's best, in round three while
Évora's effort was judged a foul. But the Portuguese
was not yet done as reached out to 17.67m in round
four and try as he could, Phillips could not get
back. One always felt that even 18 metres was a
possibility - but it would not come.
Disappointed Goldie
and Phillips may have been but they can be assured
that their Belgrave club-mates are mighty proud of
them.

Down - and out!
British Athletics League Premier Division Final Match
Needing just seven more points on a day where we should have been able
to pick them up almost anywhere, we were found wanting and paid the
penalty with relegation. Thus a twenty-two year reign
in the top division of British Athletics came to an end.
One couldn't fault any of the guys who were there and did all they
could. Towards the end of the match we were lying fourth and
it was still looking as if we might just stave off the drop - but so
few points covered the struggling clubs in positions four to seven
and the last events of the day went against us.
Congratulations to Newham & Essex Beagles who were unbeaten in 2008,
but for Belgrave, the 2009 season will have an unfamiliar look.

heroes. Mike Trees had been on business in Manchester
during the day but drove down just in time to line up in the 3000m.
Seventeen year-old Tom Gardner cleared 1.90m in the high
jump. Chris Minn set a pb in the sprint hurdles ... all good
stuff.

City2Surf
Marty Dent, unlucky to have missed out on
Olympic selection for Australia, has won this year's
16km City2Surf with a time of 41 minutes 12 seconds,
the first Australian to win since 1997.
The
29-year-old Canberra public servant who ran at the
2006 Commonwealth Games was one of the favourites
for the event.
This was Marty's 5th appearance in the race. His first was outside
the first thousand (although we think he was only 13 yrs old then)
and in his second race he was about 200+. He has been in the first
ten on two occasions.
He broke the leading pack on Heartbreak Hill taking a Tanzanian and
Shelley (AUS) with him. At 10km he really piled it on to finally
cross the line clear by
about 25 seconds.
His winning
time was a personal best, beating his previous best by 8 seconds.
And his prize - a couple of business class tickets to London as
guests of Singapore Airlines - which he plans to use to take part in
the 2009 London Marathon.

Dwain's Olympic bid is over

Sprinter Dwain Chambers
(pictured right) today failed in his High Court bid to be able to
compete in the Beijing Olympic Games next month.
Mr. Justice Colin Mackay
refused to disturb the “status quo” by granting an order
temporarily lifting his lifetime Olympic ban for drug taking.
The 30-year-old athlete who
had sat through the hour long ruling left court without comment.
But his counsel Jonathan
Crystal had told the judge on Thursday that if the decision went
against him it could lead to his retirement .
Lord Colin Moynihan chairman
of the British Olympic Association which introduced the lifetime
Olympic ban for drug taking athletes back in 1992 said after the
decision:
“It is a matter of regret that Dwain Chambers an athlete with such
undoubted talent should by his own actions put himself out of the
running to shine on the Olympic stage.
“The BOA
will continue to send out a powerful message and important message
that anyone found guilty of a drug offence should not have the
honour to represent Team GB at the Olympic Games.”
Giving his ruling in a
packed courtroom the judge said:
“Many people both inside and outside sport would see this bylaw as
unlawful.
“In my
judgment it would take a much better case than the claimant has
presented to persuade me to overturn the status quo at this stage
and compel his selection for the Games.”
Chambers is banned under a
BOA bylaw after serving a two year ban for testing positive for the
designer steroid THG in 2003.
He is the
fastest sprinter in Britain having recorded 10.00 secs dead after
winning the 100 metres at the Olympic trials in Birmingham last
Saturday.
His counsel Jonathan Crystal
had claimed the ban was: “Firstly an unreasonable restraint of
trade. Secondly it offends against competition law and thirdly it is
arbitrary, capricious and irrational.”
He added that the bylaw
“cannot be objectively justified by the BOA as proportionate.
Furthermore it promotes inconsistency and denies rehabilitation.”
But David
Pannick QC for the BOA argued
that there was no merit in the application and he was unlikely to
succeed at a full trial which had been fixed for March next year.
He said his case was “very
weak” and he could not show “that sportsmen and women are
significantly restrained in their trade by the bye-law which only
concerns eligibility for an amateur event , which takes place once
every four years and for which there is no prize money.”
David McMillan,
Law Courts
Dwain has, of
course, completed his mandatory two year ban for using banned
substances and is quite free to continue in the sport, representing
his club and country in all events but the Olympic Games.

Marty - a Dad!
Marty Dent writes from Australia to tell us that he is, "going
well," although he was disappointed the way the Olympic team
selection worked out (they picked the person he beat at the trials).
However, he's back on the roads and plans to run a marathon in 3-4
months."
Kathie and Marty had a baby boy, Elye, born on 28th May. All
are doing well.
He
tells us that he still regularly checks the Belgrave website to see
how everything is going.

Phillips is favourite
Phillips Idowu further enhanced his
position as "favourite" for the Olympic triple jump by opening his
competition at Birmingham with the world's best distance for 2008 -
17.58m. With a similar seemingly effortless mark just two
centimetres less in the next round, even Phillips is showing a
confidence that has previously eluded him: "I feel like Superman. I
don't think anyone can stop me. I'm bullet-proof."

Goldie Sayers led the women's javelin competition from the
first round and finished with a flourish - a final throw of 62.62m.
In the 5k walk 17 year-old Alex Wright placed an outstanding
third in 22:58.21 to set a superb U20 Club Record. Caught out a
little by a fast early pace, Neil Speaight worked hard
throughout the 1500m final getting up to fourth place at the end.

Dwain Chambers must now wait and see
After winning the 100m trial in 10.00 seconds - a
stadium record - Dwain Chambers admits he has done all he can
to qualify for Beijing. He must now wait to see whether the High
Court will grant an injunction allowing him to run, if selected,
pending his challenge of the British Olympic Association bylaw which
bans anyone convicted of a doping offence from ever again
representing Britain at the Olympics.

William Sharman placed 3rd in the sprint hurdles final,
Tim Bayley was 5th in the 800m and Hannah Douglas was 7th
in the 400m hurdles, not too far from her best time.

Wicksy's back!
After a miserable period since the IAAF World Cross
Country Champs., during which race Phil Wicks was affected by
a knee problem, we are pleased to report that the Belgravian is
back. After a low key outing in Nonsuch Park last week, last
night he turned his attention to the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge
in Battersea Park. Not only did he win handsomely in a time only
five seconds slower than his victory of 2007 - but his team Legal &
General collected the team title and his girlfriend Emily Adams won
the women's race.

safe arrival of baby Ben William Coughlan, born 18 June. So
belated congratulations are due to Paul and Bronwyn, now the parents

Coggie
also tells us that after an eight year hiatus, he'll be back in the
UK for a brief visit during October this year. Hopefully he'll
be able to fit in a race - or at least a run or two over the Common.
Coggie's recently got to know ex-Tipton Harrier Matt Smith, now
living in Christchurch and wanting to pass on his best wishes to
Mark Miles.

Bels move up the league
Going to Eton for the second match in the BAL Premier Division with
a team no stronger than that which gained 6th place in the opening
clash, hopes were not particularly high. But the Bels came good with
some powerful performances by newer and younger members and placed a
very pleasing 4th at the end of the day - moving up to 4th in the
league table as well. Our own man of the match must be Mark Allen
who added 6 metres to his previous best to win the B hammer throw
and won the B shot putt for good measure.
Other Belgrave winners were Neil Speaight (A 800m),
William Sharman (A 110mH), Dave Wellstead (B Triple Jump)
and the sprint relay team.
Newham & Essex Beagles won the match from City of Manchester with
Woodford Green wEL third.

Bels raid Norwich again
Belgravians won the men's and women's races at the Lord Mayor's City
Centre Classic 5k at Norwich. Simon Jones
continued a tradition of Belgrave athletes heading the field (Paul
Evans still holds the course record and Mark Miles has
won here twice), while Birhan Dagne (also the course record
holder) was winner of the women's race.
And just to make it a truly Belgrave affair, our greatest ever road
runner, Paul Evans, now also a member of City of Norwich AC, was on
hand to congratulate Simon, one of our fine crop of road runners of
today.

Chambers
- 10.06!
Competing in Biberach an der Reiss, Germany, Dwain
Chambers twice beat the 'A' standard Olympic qualifying time for 100
metres, racing 10.14 in his heat and then 10.06 to win the final.
30-year-old Chambers thus goes to joint top of the British rankings
and looks forward to the UK Championships and Olympic Trials at
Birmingham in two weeks time.
Currently he, along with others who have committed anti-doping
violations, is prevented by a British Olympic Association (BOA)
bylaw from ever again representing Team GB at any future Olympic
Games, but he insisted he will be concentrating on the track.
Chambers said: "Now I've got the qualifier, I've just got to
continue with my role which is competing and let the lawyers do
their part."
Chambers said: "I've taken up this challenge and as I have said
before, I would only do it because of my strong feelings about how
well I can run in the Olympic Games. I've matured a lot and I'd like
to go on record in saying that I've made amends for my mistakes a
long time ago, and now I'm proving that I can do it clean."
After hearing the German crowd applaud his performances, Chambers
added: "I will always remain a clean athlete from here onwards. I've
come of age now and I believe in what I say and I'm able to do the
walking as well. That comes with age, experience and confidence."

Fabulous Phillips
wins again
Sat/Sun
21/22 Jun. Competing in the SPAR European Cup at Annecy, France,
Phillips Idowu set the GB team up for a fine second day by
winning the triple jump.
The
29-year-old world indoor champion, rotated badly with his first
effort but took the lead with his second leap, 17.29m, and improved
again with his third, 17.46m.
Phillips was delighted with his first European Cup win. "I needed to
get a jump in today and win and that's what I did,"
"I
wanted a little bit more but a win is a win and I'm still on top of
the world. I reckon I can even put down another one metre."
Phillips was voted man of the match.
Neither
Samson Oni (high jump) or Goldie Sayers (javelin)
were able to live up to their recent form on day one of the
competition, placing 5th and 4th respectively.
In the
Group A competition in Leira, Portugal, Michelle Carey placed
2nd in the 400m hurdles while one time Belgravian Silvia Cruz broke
the Portuguese record in the javelin.

Rosenheim Romps
The two opening matches in the midweek Rosenheim League had Belgrave
lying just one point off bottom of the division but two subsequent
match wins have now moved us into the top four clubs - a position
that if maintained will take us to the final.
But perhaps the most noticeable feature of our team at the most
recent match was the lighthearted approach to the event by our
squad.
Long-legged middle-distance man Dave Mason had previously
tackled the high jump and triple jump in match three with some
success - 2nd place and a win - now he tried his first ever 400m
hurdles and didn't look at all bad as he successfully negotiated ten
flights of hurdles to notch up yet another win.
While this was going on, spearman James Everard, having won
his speciality, turned to the pole vault. There were no poles
available so he commandeered a length of metal fencing, cleared
2.20m and won the competition. Bonkers these javelin throwers!
Things hadn't changed by the end of the match when the time came for
the 4 x 200 metres relay. With only one genuine sprinter
available, the throwers teamed up to complete a quartet.
Peter Mayfield started out well and handed over to Roy
Collier - a cool 33 stone between them and yet we were 6th of
the nine teams. James Everard took two prisoners on
stage three before sending young Melvyn Anukam on his way to
pull us into third scoring place and fourth overall!

Track stars step up
the pace
Goldie Sayers produced her second longest throw of the season
to place 4th in the javelin at the Golden Spike Meeting in Ostrava,
where David Gillick ran 45.65 to place 2nd in the 400m.
Dwain Chambers took the SEAA 100m title at Crystal Palace but
the 'A' standard Olympic qualifying time proved elusive once more
with a head wind keeping his time down to 10.24 - three hundredths
of a second outside of his target; Wade
Bennett-Jackson was 4th. At Watford, in the BMC Elite Meeting,
Graeme Oudney ran 1:48.85 for 800m and Steve Davies was
the fastest of the Belgrave 1500m runners - 3:42.80. In
Warsaw, Poland, Neil Speaight improved his 2008 1500m time to
3:39.56.

Phillips tops World list
Phillips Idowu
went to the top of the world triple jump rankings
after clearing 17.55m at the Venizelia meeting in
Haniá in Greece
on Saturday 7 June.
Idowu's best effort was five centimetres further than the previous
leader set by Cuban David Giralt.
The Belgravian's winning distance in his first competition of the
summer represents a major boost for his Olympic title bid in
Beijing.
In the same meeting, David Gillick ran 45.78 to win the B 400
metres.
In Kassel, Germany, on 6 June,
Goldie Sayers
had a big win at the Askina meeting as she beat both the top German
javelin throwers Christina Obergföll and Steffi Nerius. At the same
meet Neil Speaight placed 3rd in a classy 1500m with
3:40.51.
In the Arles International Decathlon Kyle McCarthy was among
the field, placing
9th and racking up 7492 points.

Another "shaky"
start to BAL campaign ...
Already missing a few
key men, those Bels that made it to the start line mostly had an
uninspired match in the Premier Division at Birmingham. After
languishing in 7th place for most of the meet, the Bels crept into
6th at the death and will have to improve greatly to get clear of
the relegation zone.
Man of the match was
Samson Oni - clearing 2.30m to win the high jump. William
Sharman scored an impressive sprint hurdles win and multi-eventer
Louis Evling-Jones was everywhere - and setting a personal
record in the hurdles.

... and slammed in
Swansea!
The Belles were
outgunned in the opening UK Women's Athletics League Division Two
match, placing last of the eight teams. Once again it was a case of
far too many being unavailable with the result that the team was
very thinly spread.
But those that were
there enjoyed themselves and there were some bright spots.
Hannah Douglas set a personal best in the 400m hurdles - 58.43
for 2nd - and Michaela Hutchison was third in a closely
fought 1500m. Jodie Favell placed 2nd in the B 400m hurdles
in spite of becoming unwell overnight.

Running Wild
The Manchester 10k gave Simon Jones the chance to
do things differently. After the controlled running that he
displayed in the National 12-Stage, here he threw caution to the
winds and at 2k was operating at 28:30 pace. He then went through 3k in 8:36 and 5k in 14:29 - before suffering
for his impetuosity and sliding to a mere personal best of 29:41
instead of something even more startling.
Simon now heads our domestic 10k rankings for 2008 (Aussie based
Marty Dent was 3 seconds faster in Dublin a month back).

invitation events at this fixture.
Both Neil Speaight and Steve Davies ran nifty 1500s

Graeme Oudney was less than a second from his best 800 while
Michelle Carey and Hannah Douglas went sub-59 in their

hurdles, David Gillick won the invitation 300m and Louis
Evling Jones was victorious in his 400m race.

It's Road Relay Time
For road runners one of
the most exciting events on the calendar - "the 12 stage" - takes
place next Saturday at Sutton Coldfield. Who will end up being
national champions for 2008?
This weekend just gone
has seen guys on the edge of the Belgrave team doing all they can to
work their way into the dozen.
A couple ran in 5k
races.
Another ran a time
trial on the road - a 5k course measured with a proper course
measurer's wheel with all the kilometre marks chalked onto the
tarmac. His Dad timed, clocked the kilometre splits, stopped
his car to block off a car that might have encroached into the path
of our oncoming time-trialler - and then made sure that the
selectors were aware of the fact that a little dog and a vehicle
turning left caused slight interruptions to the run.
A few hours later - at
the end of an Open Meeting at Battersea - we had the electric timing
running on yet another time-trialler who was doing his 5k on the
"all-weather oval", lapping on his own, in the wind. It was
enthralling, seeing a guy churn out what was required after a two
year absence from our teams.
Will they get in the
team? Will the Bels, who in the last seven months have won the
National Half Marathon, SEAA 6-Stage Road Relay, National 6-Stage
Road Relay, National CC Relay and SEAA 12-Stage Road Relay, not to
mention narrowly losing the National 10k Championship, pull off this
last title at the end of a long "winter" season? This one's much too
close to call. No doubt Notts AC, Leeds City, Newham & Essex
Beagles ... maybe Aldershot Farnham & Dist. and others will have
something to say in the matter.
It should be a cracking
race.

Mark's international soccer début
Mark Humphrey has been taking
time out from his athletics for a while, having been trialled for
the island of Montserrat's soccer team.
The trial took place at Crystal Palace
and our boy impressed the selectors to the extent that they flew him
over to Trinidad for the World Cup qualifier against Surinam where
they played in the Marvin Lee Stadium.
The match took place in warm and
breezy conditions. Mark didn't get to play the whole game, being
brought on as a substitute, and his team finally went down to
Surinam 7-1.
All a good experience though -
including lining up to sing the Montserrat National Anthem before
the game.

Help Wanted
In just a few weeks time Belgrave will be taking part in the
Men's and Women's Southern Leagues. Our men's and women's T&F
team managers are unable to take on more responsibility and will

need one or two people for each of the Southern League teams to
sort out the teams on the day. And while we are at it - is there
anyone who could manage the Rosenheim League teams for the
mid-week fixtures?

Southern Comfort
Sun 6 April - Rushmoor Arena. On a day that started with three inches of snow on the ground,
Belgrave took the Southern 12-Stage title for the sixth time in
seven years. They have not been out of the medals now in the
last decade. But it was far from being a one sided race as
Aldershot, Farnham & District AC excelled, leading for six
stages and at one point enjoying a lead of all but one and a
half minutes.
Last leg man Jonathan Blackledge ran 3rd
fastest of the day on the short stages but was also 3rd fastest
Belgravian - headed by Steve Davies and Stephen Sharp.
Nick Goolab and Shaun Moralee were also in the top
ten. On the long legs, Simon Jones was our fastest,
ranked at 5th, just one second ahead of Neil Speaight.

World Cross Country Champs., Edinburgh
A crowd of around 17,000 flocked to Holyrood Park, Edinburgh to
watch the 36th IAAF World Cross Country Champs., including a
surprising number faces that are normally seen at Surrey CC League
fixtures. Thames Hare & Hounds, Herne Hill Harriers, Belgrave
Harriers - many had taken the opportunity to watch the world's
finest cross country runners in action in the UK.
Belgrave's Phil Wicks admitted to feeling a little
disappointed with his run, placing 3rd Brit after a couple of laps
but fading to 6th scorer as the race concluded. Phil placed 83rd
overall, exactly the same as last year in Mombasa, but he thoroughly
enjoyed the whole experience - another step in the learning process.
Club mate Marty Dent, racing in Australia's colours, was
105th.

Good luck to the World Cross Boys
All athletic eyes will turn to Edinburgh this coming weekend when

Holyrood Park on Sunday 30 March.
For Belgravians there will be added excitement as both Phil Wicks
(Great Britain & Northern Ireland) and Marty Dent (Australia)
will be lining up for the senior men's race.
No doubt the Ethiopians and Kenyans will be slugging it out for the
men's team title but there is great interest in who will be the
first Brit to cross the finish line. The local money is going
on Scot Andrew Lemoncello. Tom Humphries was winner of both the
National Cross and the World Trial but our own Phil Wicks was pretty
close to him in the latter. Go Phil! And Go Marty

Greg Billington nears Club U20 5,000m
record
Currently studying at
Wake Forest University, North Carolina, Greg Billington ran
14:28.97 to place 2nd over 5000m in an early season Open Meeting.
There were some 86 runners wanting to tackle the 5k which was split
into four races. Greg was always in contention in his 20 man "A"
race but just lost out in the closest of finishes as the winner ran
14:28.86.
It's a personal record
for Greg, whose main aim is, of course, triathlon, and it took him close to
the Belgrave under 20 record set in 1993 by Kassa Tadesse when
winning a BAL race in Edinburgh - 14:24.02.
Other recent
performances from Greg have been:
12 Oct Penn State
Nationals XC 5.2 miles, Pennsylvania - 10th 26:34.
27 Oct AAC XC Champs,
Charlottesville Vermont 8k - 25th 24:57.7.
18 Jan Clemson Invite,
North Carolina - 3rd 1 mile (i) 4:16.70
1 Feb Akron Open, Ohio,
11th - 3000m (i) 8:25.19 (beating Richard Ward's indoor record of
8:27.07)
28 Feb - 3 Mar AAC
Indoor, North Carolina - 3000m 10th 8:25.42 and 5000m 9th 14:43.99
(best indoor mark by a Belgrave Junior).

British record holder
Goldie Sayers qualified for this summer's Olympic Games after
winning the javelin contest at the European Cup Winter Throwing.
Sayers, who set her
British record of 65.05m last year, produced the second biggest
throw of her career in Split.
The 25-year-old landed
63.65m to reach the qualifying standard of 60.50m.
After failing to make
last summer's World Championships, Sayers will be hoping to maintain
her form in the build-up to the Olympics in August.

Wicks the Wizard!
Right: A Who's Who of cross country running 2008 - Andi Jones,
Mike Skinner, Tom Humphries, Frank Tickner, Phil Wicks, Steve Vernon and
Andrew Lemoncello share the front rank in the World Cross Trial at
Nottingham.
Another fabulous run
came from Phil as he ran to second place in the
Inter-Counties/World Cross Trial at Nottingham. Once again Tom
Humphries was the victor but our man described himself as "over the
moon" as he now turned his attention to the IAAF World Cross
Championships in Edinburgh in two weeks time.
Results:
1 T Humphries 37:03; 2 P Wicks 37:11; 3 M Skinner
37:19; 4 A Lemoncello 37:23; 5 A Vernon 37:42; 6 J Walsh 37:44. Neil Speaight was 24th in

Marty qualifies for World Cross
Marty Dent
has been in cracking track form, winning the
3000m steeplechase at the Australian
Championships at Brisbane in 8:27.00 and beating
Kosgei, Nowill and Youcef in the process.
Other performances have included a 13:41.78
5000m and a 3:44.94 1500m.
But Marty's latest
exploit was to place 4th in the Australian World
Cross Trial at Stromlo Forest Park, Canberra on
8 March. The 12k race was won by Collis
Birmingham in 36:25 with Marty just 13 seconds
behind. Only the first two were automatic
selections but with a group of runners packing
in closely, the selectors decided to fill out a
full team and Marty received confirmation of his
selection early this week. We believe it
will be his seventh World Cross.

Neil
Speaight has wintered well
Right: Mark Miles (6) and Neil
Speaight (3) race neck and neck to the finish of The Mizuno Trafford
10k
Neil Speaight showed that he was
wintered well by grabbing victory in the final few strides of the
Trafford 10k on 9 March. Speaight emerged from the pack and outsprinted
Belgrave team mate up the final straight Mark Miles to ensure a
thrilling victory in a time of 29.45.
It was Miles who took up the running
early on, leading a large pack of athletes through 1k in 2.55.
Paying close attention behind were Guernsey's Lee Merrien and Mark
Draper. Indeed it was Merrien who took up the running, just edging
in front through 4k in 11.53, with Andi Jones' course record looking
under threat, and a dozen runners still in contention.
However, as the athletes approached
halfway, it became apparent that a tactical battle was going to
ensue, with no-one prepared to really push on and make a bid for
home in a fast time. Draper briefly took up the running before Miles
re-took the lead going into the final kilometre. Clearly aware of
Speaight's presence and his 1500m speed, Miles did everything he
could to shake his team-mate off, but his effort proved unsuccessful
as Speaight edged clear with 30m left.
Understandably, Speaight was delighted
with the win smashing over a minute from his previous pb. The John Bicourt coached athlete, recently returned from a training trip in
Morocco with fellow racers Draper and Simon Jones. Whilst he was
there, Speaight was able to continue his bigger mileage that he has
been performing this winter and it would appear to be bearing
immediate fruit.
The Belgrave Harrier's form is
particularly impressive considering that last summer he was hampered
by a debilitating lung injury which prevented him from capitalising
on a 3.38 1500m early season run at Sheffield. However, Speaight
confirmed "That's all behind me now, and it's extremely motivating
to think that I ran 3.38 with out full function in my lungs. I'm
really looking forward to the summer now."
Speaight will now have a crack at next
week's inter-counties race in Nottingham, before turning his
attention to the track season, "Obviously Beijing is a major target
of mine" confirmed Speaight. "I think there are 6 lads who could run
the A 1500m standard, but that's the competition we all need and I'm
relishing the challenge."
Behind the 2 Belgrave athletes,
Merrien came home in 3rd and admitted to having 1 eye on next week's
Inter Counties in Nottingham where he hopes to be in contention for
a place on the world cross team. Belgrave wrapped up the team event
through Speaight, Miles and 4th placed Jones.
On the women's front, Bedford's
Katrina Wooton smashed the course to record a victory in 33.38, 35
seconds clear of Nicky Archer. Horwich's Katie Ingram was 3rd.
Wooton, who was only advised on Friday
that she should have a run had never done a road 10k before, went
4th on the UK rankings with her time, behind currently leader
Michelle Ross-Cope. The Andy Hobdell coached athlete will now decide
during the week whether to run at Nottingham at the weekend.
However, having narrowly missed out on selection for the world
indoors, like Speaight, Wooton's primary focus will be on the track
this summer, "I'm still weighing up doing a mix of 1500's and 5k's"
said Wooton after the race. "Ive done the bulk of my winter work in
Coventry but soon Ill be going back to St Albans to prepare for the
track."

Spanish Silver for Dwain Chambers
12th IAAF Indoor World Champs., Valencia.
After all the controversy, emotion and pressure it was a very
relieved looking Dwain Chambers who vowed to celebrate winning a
60m silver medal at "his Olympics". A personal record equalling
6.55 came in the semi finals (a record set eight years ago) and
the final saw him improve that record by one hundredth of a
second, unable to match Nigeria's Olusoji Fasuba but sharing
silver medal after dead-heating with the pride of St. Kitts and
Nevis, Kim Collins.
Earlier in the day Samson Oni placed 12th in the high
jump qualifying round with 2.24m, and thus will not take a place
in the final - while Phillips Idowu leapt 17.05m in the
triple jump and could well be a medal threat on Saturday.
When did these three Belgravians last compete in the same team?
We believe it was 1997 - in our National Junior League team.

IAAF picture of the men's 60m final with Dwain Chambers far
right.

A lex
Wright cracks 5k record
Race walking at Bexley in the
Cambridge Harriers Winter League, 17 year-old Alex Wright, barely
into the Under 20 category, not only won the race from Nick Silvester of Aldershot, Farnham & District by two seconds, he also
ducked under our best ever U20 time for the distance.
Alex clocked 23:03 to shave six seconds off the
previous mark set by Richard Dorman on 16 September 1978.
The young Belgravian is far from being a “one
trick pony” for the day after setting this record, he won the
Lambeth trial for the London Mini Marathon, running in Brockwell
Park, and followed up by running in Liverpool in the English Schools
cross country.

Darvin and Samson raise the bar
Belgrave's
high jumping duo of Samson Oni and
Darvin Edwards are enjoying a productive
winter with coach Trevor Llewellyn. Last
week Darvin won the SEAA Indoor title at Lee
Valley in 2.20m with Samson clearing the same
height but pushed back to equal 2nd on countback.
Seven days
later at Brunel's Indoor Jumps Meet in West
London, Darvin went even higher, setting a new
St. Lucian national record of 2.25m
before retiring from the
competition on the advice of Trevor. Samson was
again second in 2.20m but watch out for
fireworks when the big events come around, for
he was ranked number one in the UK in 2007 with
a best of 2.28m.
Hopefully
both will be in action in
the Birmingham Games next weekend and at the
World Indoor trials the weekend following.
There is a
possibility
of pre-season training for Darvin, Samson and
Trevor in St Lucia at the end of March/beginning
of April. We hear that the St. Lucian Athletics
authorities are keen accommodate them and are
open to exploring ways in which to subsidise
visitors in return for athletics clinics/master
classes to St Lucian schools/aspiring athletes.

Jonathan back on track
We're
pleased to hear that after a foot
infection curtailed his activities before
Christmas, Jonathan Blackledge raced last
weekend in the Romsey 5 Mile Road Race and won
with 24:28.
He
was not sure how things would go, having not
donned his racing shoes for a while, but it
turned out well. The standard was pretty good
with Woodford Green's Simon Plummer also
running, and the result was that JB had a
serious test to help him gauge his fitness. He
took the lead from halfway and pushed on hard in
the final km to open out a lead of 18 seconds.
Next up for
Jonathan
is the BUSA Cross Country Championships at the
weekend before turning his attention to the
indoor scene for the AAA Championships and then
the Armagh 5k Road Race.

The Flyder Cup
In an epic darts competition between Thames Hare
& Hounds and Belgrave Harriers on Saturday night
at Belgrave Hall, it all came down to the final
"1001 down - all in" match to decide the
destination of The Flyder Cup ...
Belgrave took an
early lead - up to 4-1 ... Thames came back,
simultaneous matches finishing within seconds
with our rivals clocking out on doubles to hoots
of delight ... and it was 6-6. Nip and tuck then
through the doubles until at 9-9 it was down to
the final game. Now it was Thames making the
pace right until the home straight only to be
denied when a final Belgrave flourish took the
home club ahead just before the tape with Knut
Hegvold's killer "dip" being a double 11
check-out.
It was a great
evening and one well worth repeating. Many
thanks to Will for getting it off the ground -
to Pat for rustling up a score or more helpings of
home made lasagne and chilli con carne, and to Maureen
and Brian for providing
the baked potatoes.
And of course many
thanks to our guests Thames Hare & Hounds for
rising to the challenge. We've no doubt
that Larry Mathews is even now organising
training sessions with a view to Thames lifting
the Flyder in 2009.

Kenya's darkest days
The news bulletins
bring us terrible pictures from Kenya where
political and now tribal differences have
resulted in escalating violence and bloodshed.
It is brought home to us, as runners, when we
hear that some of the most brutal fighting has
taken place in Eldoret, the home of so many of
Kenya's world beating distance runners. Lucas
Sang, a member of Kenya's 4x400m team
at
the 1988 Seoul Olympics, was hacked to death and
his body burnt by a rampaging mob, while
Luke Kibet
who won the Marathon at last year’s 11th World
Athletics Championships in Osaka is lucky to be
alive after being attacked by the same machete
wielding gang.
While the latest
terrors were being reported last night on TV we
received the following heart rending SMS message
from our friend of the last year or so:
"Hi Alan and your
family, it is me John Kimaiyo in Kenya. We
really need your prayers. Kenya in war after
wrong election. I lost my cousin brother Luka
Sang ... Pray for us."
What can we do but
hope and pray that talks between the opposing
forces will result in things returning to
normal, thus sparing John and all the other
ordinary citizens of Kenya.

Past Belgrave
athletes in the frame as Welsh Athletics unveil top coaches
Welsh Athletics have just
named three coaches who have been tasked with
developing talent over the years ahead. Top
scalp is that of Bengt-Eric Blomkvist the
Swedish national coach renowned for overseeing
the world class performances of Sweden’s Susanne
and Jenny Kallur. Backing him will be Past
Belgrave top athletes Darryl Maynard
(middle distance) and Nigel Bevan
(throws).
Darryl Maynard competed 26
times in BAL matches for Belgrave accumulating
275 points in the process to put him in 21st
spot on our all-time rankings. He competed in
the 400, 800, occasional 1500 and the long
relays and his last BAL outing for Belgrave was
on July 5th 1997 at Solihull where in a Div 1
match he ran 48.2 for the 400 and was part of a
long relay squad which comprised also Noel Levy,
Chris Rawlinson and Phil Goedluck. Darryl was
one of the team's big extrovert characters and
his exploits are still remembered with amusement
by the team management.
Nigel Bevan also competed in
26 BAL matches for Belgrave and was a
contemporary of Darryl. His javelin prowess was
legendary and with a best of 81.70m in 1992 he
ranked among the best in the world, thwarted
only by the incredible presence of Backley and
Hill in their world best prime. Nonetheless
Nigel finished 4th in the World Student Games
and represented Wales in the Vancouver
Commonwealth Games. Nigel accumulated 361 points
in BAL for Belgrave and still ranks 13th on the
list of all time greats. His last match in
Belgrave colours was at Kingsmeadow on 17th
August 1996 where he finished 3rd with 70.88m.
We wish both Darryl and Nigel all
success in their new appointments based in
Cardiff.

Coggie's crew grows
News from New

Coughlan and wife Bronwyn are

track down one time Belgravian Ray Foley.
We know that Ray headed for Yorkshire and heard
that he was going to join Leeds City - has
anyone heard from him lately.

Phillips Idowu in the best form of his career
European indoor
triple jump champion Phillips Idowu declared
himself to be in the best form of his career
after he bettered his own South of England
Indoor Championships record by 58 centimetres on
Sunday.
Competing at the
Lee Valley Athletics Centre that has been his
training base since he recovered from a back
injury that restricted him to sixth place at
last summer's World Championships, Idowu opened
with a leap of 16.96metres, adding 48cms to the
record he set 12 months ago.
He improved to
17.06m, had two marginal fouls that would have
added another 30cm and said: "I don't think I
have ever felt this good ever. The stuff I have
been doing in training is the best work I have
done.
"I was a little
bit nervous last night because you never know
how the first competition will go. Now I know I
can jump 17m easily.
"Consistently I
was hopping and stepping 12 metres. I usually
don't get close to that before the summer."
The 29-year-old
will now plan a competitive winter programme
with coach John Herbert and refuses to commit
himself to competing at the World Indoors in
Valencia in March.

... and also in the Men's & Women's
Southern League
In 2007 the men entered the Southern
League as a joint team with Sutton & District AC but next summer we
will be putting out a pure Belgrave team as we take our place in
Division Four (North). Matches will be at Battersea, Thurrock,
Battersea again (a home match on June 28th), Watford and Stevenage.
Some of the dates will clash with
British League fixtures and on these occasions we'll need every
available person lending a hand to make sure that we fulfil our
obligations by providing judges ... and of course athletes.
We have also entered the Women's
Southern League where we'll take part in Division Two of the Seniors
only competition. Again help will be required to make sure
that things go well.
So ... plenty of competition, then, in
2008, for those who don't quite make the BAL and UKWAL squads.

George Beecham M.B.E.
Long Distance walker, George
Beecham, has achieved many honours since joining the Club
almost 60 years ago but none matches the MBE, awarded by the
Queen, for services to the community of Canvey Island.
George was a leading member
of Championship teams on many occasions from the 1950s to
70s. He gained a GB vest in 1957 at 50 kms and completed
many trips to Brighton in addition to having a unique record
in the Nijmegen Shield race over 20 miles which the Club
won 8 years in succession with George a member of every
team.
He is also a Centurion having
walked 100 miles in 24 hours on more than one occasion. He,
and wife Marlene, moved to Canvey Island back in the 1950s
and was soon involved in a number of local activities.
Raising money for charities and serving on the Sport's
Council still takes up much of his time. He combines sport
with support by actively helping victims of heart problems
by leading weekly walks.
On a wider front he has, for
many years, walked the London Marathon and the Nijmegen
Marches in Holland to raise money for charities
including the RNLI, Asthma and Heart research. He helped
form, and still coaches, Point Clear Athletic Club, one
early member being Dean Macey.
It is typical of George that
he helps organise a 5 mile race annually and on the day he
assists by putting up the finish funnel, setting out
notices, walking the course, all the 5 miles, to check, and
sweep if necessary, the pathway then returning to race the
course!
Such service deserves
recognition and we congratulate George on his award - be
warned though George that corgis do not need that much
exercise.
