Martin Dent - 19th Commonwealth Games - Day 11: Marathon

Marty Dent 6th in torrid marathon

Thursday 14 October.  Running for Australia, Marty Dent (far left) placed 6th in the marathon on day eleven of the Games where the conditions slowed the winning time to 2:14:35.  Marty's time was 2:20:29 and he was second Aussie home behind Michael Shelley who placed second. Winner was Kenya's John Kelai.  Only 24 started and five of them failed to reach the finish.

Alex out of sorts in 20k Walk

Saturday 9 October. It was unlucky 13th in 1:34:26 for Alex Wright who on the bare results appears to have competed as a shadow of his normal self in the 20km Walk.  If he could have reproduced his best time he may well have been 4th or 5th.  Not only was he some 9 minutes slower than his best for the distance, he was third Englishman and suffered the ignominy of a "bent knee" warning.  We'll bring you further news as soon as we find out more ... but this certainly wasn't the Alex that we have seen racing so well throughout the summer.

Oni just out of the medals

Samson Oni made good early progress in the high jump final with first time clearances at 2.10m and 2.15m, then needing two bites at 2.20m before effortlessly soaring over 2.23m first time again. Things were beginning to look very exciting as only the Bahamian pair of Thomas and Barry had a better record. Then at 2.26m things began to unravel. The former two soared on, Kgosiemang of Botswana moved into third place at his second attempt at the height ... while Samson and two others could go no further. After countback our man was in that most unenviable position of fourth.

Will SharmanSilver medal for William Sharman

Friday 8 October. William Sharman had spent the night before his event suffering from attacks of vomiting and diarrhoea.  Nevertheless, he turned out for his heat of the sprint hurdles and ran 13.66 to place 2nd and thus qualify for the final.  But the drama wasn't over as Will now was taken into hospital and put on a drip to replace lost fluids.  Thoughts of giving the final a miss were pushed to the back of his mind when he considered that his mother had flown out to India to support him - and back on the track for the final he raced to the silver medal position with 13.50 behind English team mate Andy Turner's winning 13.38.

"It has been quite an ordeal. At the holding camp in Qatar I think I picked up a virus but it came into full effect yesterday. It was touch and go whether I raced or not".

Matt up to form in hammer throw

Also competing on Friday, Welshman Matthew Richards reached 12th place in the hammer, throwing 60.52 metres.

Thursday 7 October.  English high jumper Samson Oni headed qualifying group A with an immaculate series of 2.10m, 2.13m and 2.16m - all first time clearances - while big rival Martyn Bernard went out of the competition.
