Whoo...hoo we stay up!
When team boss Bob Bridges approached the league to confirm that we
would like to go to the qualifier in an attempt to regain our place
in the UKWAL he received exciting news.
Because Gateshead didn't show for the final match in our division
and Liverpool Harriers up in Division One failed to cover 50% of the
events and have been penalised, it seems that we stay in the UKWAL
without having to re-qualify.
Now, with a bit of team building during the winter, everyone feels
sure that we have gone as low as we are likely to go. It's
onwards and upwards in 2011!

Above: Susan Bovill has scored heavily over 400 and 200 metres - and
is one of the mainstays of the relay teams. Michaela Hutchison
has had a lower key year than normal but raced over 800 and 400
metres - and the long relay of course. Great to have long time
member Amala Onuora back in the team to boost the sprints; she
competed in all three matches. Photos by Rex Bale.
Match 3, Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth, 1 August 2010.
Buoyed up - but still 7th

Bubbling after their Eastern Division Rosenheim League win, the
Belles were well up for the trip to Portsmouth, insisting that Bob
got a minibus so that they could enjoy each other's company on the
journey. But sheer enthusiasm and doubling and trebling up to
attempt to fill the team sheet is not enough when there is a rule
stating that no athlete is allowed to tackle more than three events.
So it was 7th place once again and the spectre of relegation and
dropping out of the UKWAL looms large. But the girls are
adamant that they love this competition and have instructed the boss
that they want to take part in the qualifying match to see if they
can regain their position.

A much stronger Belgrave team gathered for what was virtually a home
match. We scored more than double our points tally at
Gateshead - but then of course quite a few of the other clubs were
relatively local as well. This time it was Gateshead's turn to feel
the pinch and the Channel Islands team didn't travel too well either
and as a result the Belles placed 6th on the day but still couldn't
get out of the relegation zone.

For the six southern clubs Gateshead was always going to be a tough
match but with only eight Belles travelling to the North East we
were setting ourselves up for a tough season. Surprisingly
Leeds AC were also weak and we pipped them by a point to stay off
the bottom.
"Were you disappointed?" team manager Bob Bridges was asked after
the event. "Not a bit," was his reply. "You know they
all really enjoyed themselves - and that's what it's really all
about."
