League campaign draws to a close

Alan Mead writes:- Isolated in third league spot with the first two teams out of sight and the pack behind sufficiently distant to permit our Captain and his Harriers to sleep soundly at night, there was not a lot to play for. But there were new team members to meet, an individual league title to retain for Paskar and of course the banter typically associated with runners: “So what have you come as?” said Wardy to Dave Mason, who was sporting arm warmers and long socks. Dave’s reply was not recorded but he was far from the only one trying to keep warm on a day where the temperature hovered just above freezing and snow still lay about the Common. A look in the direction of our team manager and his colleague Gordon Biscoe, who had been on the Common laying out the start/finish area since before noon, along with Donny Anderson who was out marking the trail, showed one gentleman dressed like a Canadian trapper and another with enough clothes on to give the impression that he perhaps expected to be sleeping rough that evening. Anyway, enough of all that, the sun was in a blue sky, the Belgrave flag fluttered in the lightest of breezes … and there was a race to be run.

Paskar and Wardy led the field away from our new start/finish area near The Fox & Grapes as Richard Stannard turned up to apologise for not being able to run due to a calf pull, before heading off for a swim; he had been hoping for another of his ‘putting everything on the line in the first mile’ type runs and then attempting to hang on, in his quest for improving his race pace and a shot at Olympic triathlon selection.

A lap later Paskar was clear and running considerably more comfortably than Wardy who was having a difficult day after a week which had included a 1:53 indoor 800 metres in Sheffield and a 15:09 5k in Ireland. Nothing had changed much as these two ran in to the finish with Paskar retaining his individual title in style. They were backed up well by Martin Holm and the Cockerpillar, who had previously been over at Esher marshalling the efforts of his ladies team in securing promotion. With plenty of bodies to fill out the team and some to spare it was fourth on the day and third overall at the end of the series. Special mentions to non-scorers Will Ireson who seems to have come on a lot after a winter’s training and new men Andrew Broadfoot and Sam Boaden who appeared to enjoy their first day racing with the Harriers (the latter drawing the attention of AW scribe Martin Duff: “Who’s the new man?”). Tim Weeks, who did score, was much improved on previous runs as he works his way back after his horrible ankle injury.

A low key Herne Hill Harriers team scored twice as many points as is their norm but still increased their margin over Thames Hare & Hounds.  Clapham Chasers lost out by the smallest of margins in the battle to avoid relegation and will join Dorking & Mole Valley in Division 2 next winter. Things will be a whole lot tougher in Division 1 as we will be joined by Kent AC who have rampaged their way up through the divisions in the last three years.

Many thanks to all our club members who assisted in putting on a successful league race, and special thanks to our friends from local clubs who helped us out – Don Turner (Epsom & Ewell), Richard Carter (South London), Mike Scofield (Clapham Chasers) and Pete Mulholland, Sheila White and Phil Martin (all of Hercules Wimbledon).

Famous Five Save The Day

Will Cockerell writes:- Enid Blyton could've scripted the Belles here. A quaint village scene with a picturesque blanket of snow, but underneath the idyllic veneer, lurked menace, trouble and danger! The only way promotion could elude us was if we fielded two short of a full team, and we cut it very fine with a huge injured and unavailable list - 26 of 'em. Make that 27 when Maureen had 'a touch of the Nellies' to her train-catching strategy, and took one bound for Reading not Woking. Bad idea, and now we were down to the bare 5...

Vicki flew in to Heathrow without alarm, using the race as a warm-up to Sunday's Bramley 20, and Fee drove down the night before and although her lad locked the car keys in the boot, this only incapacitated the vehicle, but not mama; nice try though. Hester's little boy picked up the winter vomiting bug, but she tore herself from his bedside with wonderful club spirit. Late on Friday, the TM was fearing such low numbers he had a panicky howl on email, and the SOS cry shook loose a couple of good apples in Catriona and Rieko.
To the start then and with a bottleneck 150 yards hence, Charlie Dickinson advised a chipper start, and boy did they. Fee was inside the top dozen overall and Hester and Rieko went out very quickly - but they're getting fit these two, and at half-way were still devouring bodies. Vicki kept watch, sticking out as the track runner amongst the 'grinders', while Catriona paid a small price for her early fireworks but was providing a solid anchor.

Lap two and under instructions should any ankles be broken, to crawl over broken glass to the finish, Fee completed another resounding race, just a few seconds down on fourth - to leapfrog to the top of the Cross-country plate table in the process. Rieko finally shook off the attentions of Hester, with both girls producing their finest runs for Belgrave, and Vicki and Cat smoothly saw us home.

So we're up then - as Div 2 champions - but if not for one or two of this Famous Five it could have been a ghastly cock-up. THH looked awesome to take Div 1, but we're not scared and will seek to hit them hard in eight months time. Thanks to all who competed in what has been a really fun and entertaining league campaign.

High drama on the South Downs

Top: Phil Wicks is in full flight - half distance and he's 30 metres clear of the field.  Pictures by Steve Wicks.

Alan Mead writes:- When past cross country champion Gerry North was asked what he thought of the Stanmer Park course he opined … “this is a tough one!” … and surveying the rolling hills of the South Downs one couldn’t help agreeing with him.  The going was firm but the there was nary a level stretch anywhere … and of course it was 15 kilometres in length.

Desperate for a race after missing planned outings for various reasons and slightly uneasy about a hip niggle, Phil Wicks made a decision to run on the morning of the race.  The ubiquitous Cockerpillar was there, James Kelly wouldn’t miss the ‘Southern’ for all the sunshine in Madrid (although his Spanish club mates could not quite comprehend a 2,000 mile round trip to compete over 15k of English style cross country) and as start time neared Lander Eguia and Mike Trees both arrived, nursing colds but thinking that they must turn out to ensure we had a full squad.  Sadly their efforts only saw our numbers reach five, one short of the team requirement.

After the charge along the start stretch the first turn saw Phil Wicks in the front rank and as the initial small lap (itself containing a substantial climb) was completed and the field headed out into Downs proper, all the leading contenders were in place.  Slowly the protagonists were whittled down and at 6k three men were clear of the field: Neilsen Hall (Bedford &C), Glen Watts (Shaftesbury Barnet) and Phil tucked in behind about two metres back but picking up that small deficit as they disappeared from view onto the second large loop.

A substantial crowd of fans had climbed to a vantage point to see the runners twice on each circuit and they eagerly scanned the track ahead, waiting for the runners to emerge from woodland … “here they come,” … and “Wicks” was the name on the lips of the cognoscenti.  He was 30 metres clear of the other two … and going away! Sure enough that lead did grow … 40 metres … some say it was more.  In the minds of all, Phil was heading for a third win in this championship to add to his victories of 2007 (Holkham Hall, Norfolk) and 2009 (Hillingdon House Farm, Uxbridge). One couldn’t entirely disregard the opposition for those splintered chasers had slowly coalesced into a pursuing bunch of five as the last lap was begun … but no, the gap was too big now.

Down to the finish stretch, then, and wait for the arrival … and after what seemed like an interminable interlude, there he was in the distance bursting out of the coppice at the top of the hill, perhaps 500 metres to go and heading down the steep slope towards the final turn; but … gasp! … there also was Ben Tickner, 20m behind and using that last drop like a fell runner.  One could see the gap diminishing; was Phil was aware of the danger? Such was Tickner’s momentum that he was on the Belgravian as the turn was made into the finish stretch and no amount of gear changing by our man could match his rival's pace. While the winner celebrated as he crossed the line, tugging at his vest to give prominence to the ‘Wells City’ logo, an already disconsolate Phil Wicks maintained his pace to take the silver medal.

Phil was fuming at the way things had turned out.  “I can accept being beaten on any day of the week,”  he later pronounced, “but to lose like that is hard to take. I won’t forget that for a while.”

Nevertheless, it was a superb run from a man not yet at the top of his game and whatever he thought, the general opinion was: “Wicksy’s back!”

James Kelly cannot be praised highly enough for his battling run in the twenties, finishing in 16th and up eleven spots on last year.  His stress fracture now seems to be a thing of the past (touch wood) and he is planning another crack at the London Marathon.

Belles Hit First Ever Major Cross Podium

Will Cockerell writes:- In a pot-boiler of a race, the Belles scrapped for every point at Brighton's tough but fair Stanmer Park, knowing that a top five return was possible as our runners possessed an abundance of strength and savvy.

A week before the race we lost luminaries Sarah Murphy, Catherine Bryson and Zoe Smith in quick succession, but the remaining five held firm.  Sam argued a tricky exit visa from her coach; Fee was originally a ‘no’ due to a very long journey, but then couldn't resist; and Nelle is sick to the eye-teeth of running ten times above her preferred distance, but grimly gave the nod.

On to the race and it became clear the field had good depth, and there would be no 'false highs' that some 'Southerns' outside London have produced.  Sam and Fee were top 35/40 early doors, Nellie observing not far back and Tilly and Hester (making a welcome return to the team) neck and neck.

10 minutes in and Sam was running with purpose, a little outside the top 25, flinging her cap at the TM.  The rest were keeping reputable company, although positions were not perhaps what we hoped for.   A little later and Sam, who had climbed a few spots, hurled more clothing at the TM, this time her gloves.   Forget the race, this was becoming an intriguing little game of strip poker.  "I'm not chucking you anything else," barked Sam.  Ah well - a time and a place.

As for the others, Fee was starting to move through, and although Nelle was toiling a tad (racing on a tender ‘hammy’), Tilly was also making good inroads, as she chased a second team medal in this event, after she led London Irish to bronze back in 1999.

And so to the end game.  What joy to see Sam break free of a large pack of hungry wolves and seal sweet 16th, for her finest run in the claret and gold.  Fee held firm as she inevitably does, and Tilly hove into view soon after, with a spent Nelle clinging on, now running on two tender hammies.

To the naked eye it looked like 5th or 6th, but although many clubs had fielded solid outfits, two of our biggest worries, last year's champions Norwich, and Met League leaders Highgate could not close in;  nor could other big guns Woodford, Bedford or Shaftesbury.  Another key threat, Winchester, had a rocking trio, and looked big 'faves', but then had to wait till 187 for their fourth - Southampton had a similar problem.

It became clear that St. Alban's would be a threat though, who had three athletes run round together as a deadly sniper's unit in the late 30s, but we finished ahead of them by a pipsqueak two points, with another seven teams cascading in shortly after that.  We had done it - bronze medals were ours!

So, a famous day, with never-say-die running by our quintet, and our first ever club honours at either the Southern or National cross.  It's taken 36 years, but surely the wait will not be as long for more.

2XU Surrey CC League, Race 3, Farthing Downs, Coulsdon, 14 January 2012.

A crash at Coulsdon

Never the most popular of courses among our number, this is often where we come unstuck … and it was no different this time. A string of injuries and colds kept some of our regulars away but in spite of struggling badly with his hamstring after the previous week’s county champs., Captain Wardy felt he must turn out, hoping to save us about 75 points.  So, we were eleven strong as the warning whistle heralded the start, with the luxury of a back-up man should anything untoward happen. Once we’d got over the mild panic of trying to find a hair band for Robert Norville (a fetching pink one – donated by Vicki Goodwin) they were away.

Typical Wardy, somehow he found himself leading early on in the piece but places had pretty much settled down after the completion of a lap with Herne Hill’s Chris Busaileh making the running at the front.

There were no major changes in the second half of the race.  Paskar is still some way short of his pre-Christmas form and seemed concerned after the event that perhaps his overall individual lead was slipping away – but by our reckoning he is still heading the points score. The Cockerpillar maintained his inevitable position in the top score – and aren’t we glad he does it!  Thereafter we had to go back a bit before Mike Trees led home the rest, moving up a whole gear since Denbies the previous week. It was good to see Tim Weeks getting round with no damage to his fragile ankles and Nick Dilley made his first ever appearance among the scorers.

As Vicki’s chocolate cake was consumed we were able to reflect on the state of play.  Not only did Wardy save us a promised 75 points, he’d stretched it to 85 by claiming an outstanding (bearing in mind his injury) 5th individual place and although we were seventh team on the day our league place of 3rd remained unchanged.  The Stragglers were the big losers as they dropped two league positions while Ranelagh and South London made strides which should see them safe for 2012.

Almost missing the start, Malik Nehaili charged off at the back of the Young Athletes’ field but the finish was even more dramatic.  Heading up the finishing funnel he was under huge pressure from a South London runner but flung himself forward at the line in a dip that Colin Jackson in his prime would have been proud of.

A high Fee only four could afford

Will Cockerell writes:- After some half-dozen Belles fell away, the TM awoke on Saturday to only 3 yesses... trouble!  Was this to be our unravelling as all our rivals would come roaring back?  Not a bit of it.  Some old favourites confirmed during the morning and we were delighted to welcome another of this term's promising debutantes in Sarah Lichtensteiger, who veered unwisely close to the TM last Sunday for her afternoon exercise on the Common, and was duly pounced on by the hawk.

THH's Lucy MacAlister was a class apart.  At one stage the TM resorted to lying horizontally across her path in an attempt to slow her but that only earned a coquettish giggle and a neat shimmy to the left.  Anyway, not our division, not our problem (yet).  Considering how many big guns we were missing, we packed beautifully here.  Find of this season - any season perhaps - Fee is now four great runs out of four, and still the business end of the season to come.  Nellie all but cried off with a bug, but decided to give it a go - we're so glad - she rocked.

Tilly is really finding her groove and secured a nuggety top 10, and Anne looked much comfier than at the counties.  Vicki closed us in smoothly before handing round gorgeous choc cake baked by her local resident Pa, and she was pushed hard by Rieko and Maureen who both looked in fine fettle.  Our debutante Sarah, totally new to the unique world of club athletics, started sensibly and picked off several in part two.  Her stride is tidy, and she will kick on from here, especially when she joins 'Charlie's Angels'.

A strong showing from Epsom Oddballs nicked us on the day by 7 points, but our lead at the top of the table grew, and we're now a massive 260 points inside the promotion zone.

Surrey County CC Champs., Denbies Vineyard nr. Dorking, 7 January 2012

Oooh! So Close

Always entertaining, the County Champs saw the Bels expecting second team place but after two and a half laps there was great excitement around the course as we were still holding on to a slim lead in a gripping contest with Herne Hill Harriers.  Plans to turn out an ‘unbeatable’ team took a knock when Richard Ward’s participation was in doubt due to his South of the Thames recurrence of a hamstring injury.  Then we knew we’d miss Wicksy who’d been selected to run for GB&NI in Edinburgh … but in fact he had to turn that down when poor Emily Wicks suffered a relapse of her collapsed lung that flared up when she was competing in the European Cross Country Champs. (We’re pleased to say that an operation has proved to be successful.)

Of course Wardy ran, injured or not, but the odds were with Herne Hill although our lads were not going to roll over.  In a quest for an Olympic Triathlon place our Richard Stannard is making great efforts with his running and headed the field for the first 1,000 metres before Serpentine’s Nick Torry made a break that he maintained to the finish.  Dicing with Dorking’s Luke Caldwell, Thames’ James McMullen and AFD’s Steve Connor, James Kelly began a race long struggle for the silver medal while new man Dan Agustus was proving to be a huge boost to our team back in 6th.  Richard Stannard was holding up well after his impetuous start and Paskar Owor, Will Cockerell and Wardy made up a six that were some way clear of the opposition after one lap.

4 kilometres later and we were still in control, although a train of runners in red & black livery was ominously thundering along the tracks between the vines, running down Will and Paskar, who was clearly out of sorts. This was going to be horribly close; if only we were in an old time movie and we could switch the points!  Halfway round the third and final lap we still somehow clung to a small advantage but Busaileh, Paviour Taylor and Barnes for the Hill were at breakneck speed now, driving along shoulder to shoulder, and as the finish neared they swept past Richard Stannard.

The TM had totted up the scores and ruefully shook his head before heading the way of Herne Hill's worried looking Geoff Jerwood who'd not kept a tally and gratefully accepted an outstretched hand of congratulations.  We’d been denied the ‘golds’ after the tightest of battles with the Hill for the second successive year. Herne Hill were (7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 21) - 74 points. Great runs had come from came from James Kelly (3) who just lost out to Caldwell at the end, Dan Agustus (6), Richard Stannard (14) and Will Cockerell (19) while Captain Richard Ward was a hero in closing in the team (22) and taking his first steps in running kit since that injury three weeks earlier; but poor Paskar Owor, expected to be in the top five at least, was well down on expectations (18) after the Christmas break and a flight back from Uganda. So the Bels scored 82. Terrific race once again though!
