H.G.Brockman Trophy Meeting - Tooting, 1951

The 1951 H.G. Brockman Trophy Meeting of 1951 was held at Tooting on May 26th, and Belgrave Harriers ended the afternoon placing second to host club Herne Hill Harriers.

The 1 mile event saw Charlie Walker and Bill Lucas both run well with the former beating Alec Olney of Thames Valley Harriers for first place with Bill third.  Bill had "pepped up" the pace with a lap to go, breaking up the field and enabling Charlie to use his strong finishing burst to good advantage.  In the picture above Charlie has the lead with Bill, on the kerb, in third.

Can anyone identify any of the other runners above.  As the positions of the runners seem to be as they were at the finish, could the photograph have been taken with just half a lap remaining?

Both Charlie and Bill remain Belgravians today.  Bill was Cross Country & Road Running Team Manager for many years and also managed the Surrey Cross Country team when they won the Inter-Counties event; he has twice been President of the Club and remains a respected member of its Committee.  Charlie has never stopped running and recently served as President of Veterans' A.C.
