European Championships 100 metres - Budapest, 1998

Darren Campbell wins the European Games 100 metres Championship in a record time of 10.04 seconds at the Nepstadion, Budapest, 19 August 1998.

As heats progressed to second rounds and then to semi-finals it always looked like being a two horse race between Campbell and Dwain Chambers - and it still looked that way with 30-40 metres of the final gone.  Then came Darren's electrifying finish that swept him away from his younger rival and across the line for a time four hundredths of a second faster than his coach Linford Christie's previous Championship Best.

There had been many who thought that Dwain might have pulled it off himself.  His starting was tremendous and his aggression during each race was plain for all to see.  It was the first ever British one-two in a European 100m final.

100m: (+0.3) 1, D.Campbell 10.04; 2, D.Chambers 10.10; 3, H.Papadias (Greece) 10.17.
