adidas Belgrave SPEED Grand Prix 2003

GP4 - 13 AugustMartin Dent produced the highest enduro score for an individual event while winning the SEAA and Belgrave 10,000m Championships.  But the Grand Prix prize of £75 went to a man who wasn't even present, for Matt Norminton's score for the best three runs of four did not come under threat.  Josh Wood was a runaway winner of the sprint Grand Prix.  Nobody came near the man from Harrow who completed every one of the eight events for a massive score.  Julie Hubbard of Herne Hill was almost as impressive having run seven out of eight races.  Unfortunately for Julie, we were some way short of the required number of entries for the women's sprints so the cash prize was not on offer.

Sprinters: 68 male and 14 female. Endurance athletes: 43 male and 6 female.

We plan to stage the series again in 2004, maybe with a few minor changes.  The series is put on for you the athletes so if you have any views on what events should be included or whether the meetings should switch, say, to Sundays, then please let us know. armead@btinternet.com

We look forward to seeing you all again in 2004.

GP 3 - 23 July. The sprint GP results look as if they've been settled without the need for the final round.  Julie Hubbard and Josh Wood will be winners - even if Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery show up for GP 4!  All is to play for in the Endurance Series, however.  With only the best three events out of a possible four to count for each runner, the leader Matt Norminton could find himself under attack from Kassa Tadesse, currently lying 5th but with only two races making up his score.

GP 2 - 25 June. The performance of the night came from Shaftesbury Barnet's Jo Ankier as she fought  to gain the European Under 23 qualifying standard of 10:36.00 for the 3,000 metre steeplechase.  A final circuit of 1:31 was needed after she'd been lapping at that pace or faster throughout the race but Jo had run herself out and could only manage 1:41 for that painful final tour of the Millennium Arena.

Andy Coleman ran a powerful last lap in the 3000m, taking the lead just before the bell after Herne Hill's Matt Norminton had led from the start. Norminton's consolation was to hold on to his lead in the endurance GP after two rounds.

Enee Udu Obong proved to be the pick of the sprinters with his 10.69/21.63 double, the times all being held back by the cool blustery breeze.  However it was Harrow's Josh Wood who went clear in the GP standings, one of only two men who has run four out of four races at the half way point.

Julia Hubbard of Herne Hill tops the women's sprint GP but with two meetings to go she is still within range of her rivals.  We need 22 women's entries in the second half of the competition for the £75 prize to be awarded.  Come on ladies - get a few of your training partners to come along.

GP 1 - 11 June. The first round of the adidas Belgrave SPEED Grand Prix saw fiftytwo athletes taking part in a total of seventeen races.  James Trapmore heads the Enduro Grand Prix after the 1500 metres with Uvie Ugono and Deborah Okangi leading the men's and women's sprint lists.  It was good to see the women's sprints well supported and if we can get forty entries or over in total then the women's first prize of £75 will be awarded at the end of the series - so far we have had eleven.

The performance of the evening, based on the IAAF Scoring Tables, was Marlon Dickson's 10.64 100m (worth 1024 points) which will not count towards his GP total as it was run in the extra series of races, followed closely by his 10.68 (1012) which will count.
