Book Review

"Finally the marathon has a book worthy of its long and epic journey."  David Powell, The Times.

So this is what Will has been up to.

At last it's here - a mighty hard-backed tome in which are recalled some of the greatest marathon races since the beginnings of our sport.

Will mixes anecdote with analysis as he takes the reader on the highs and lows of the history of the modern marathon - together with the extraordinary stories of the athletes who ran.

Spiridon Louis, Derek Clayton, Emil Zátopek, Paula Radcliffe, Rob de Castella, Joan Benoit, Khalid Khannouchi - they're all here plus 43 more.

And we've even learned a little more about our Running Captain - did you know that he was educated at Boston University as well as Eton College - that he is the great-grandson of Harold Macmillan?

We're still dipping into this book, hopelessly unable so far to be able to tackle it from from number 50 through to number 1, but enjoying picking up on Will's infectious enthusiasm for his project - and his occasionally racy style.

If you love marathons, get yourself a copy. Email Will on willcockerell@yahoo.co.uk.  Its 541 pages and 128 images are a snip at £19.99.
