GORDON S. DOUBLEDAY 19122001

Gordon, who died 15th June aged 89, is best described as one of the great all-rounders of Belgrave.

He started by running in a novice race in 1934, went on to be a more than useful Club runner over road and country; converted to walking to very good effect; played a decisive role in the administration of the Club; was President for 1969/70; a fount of all knowledge on things Belgravian, and was in great demand by other bodies such as the Centurions and the Road Runners Club.

Above all this quiet man enjoyed his athletics, was proud of his Club, and was a regular contributor to our club magazine as well as serving a spell as Editor.  A useful man in a team when at his fittest he will be best remembered for the part he played in the team which won the "Junior" National Walk in 1939 and the several occasions when he was the key fourth scorer in Surrey County Championships which were, usually two horse races between ourselves and Surrey WC.  "Doub" could be relied on to know what was required and then to deliver the placing - on occasion due to the absence of our stars.

His spell as Hon Treasurer, from 1950 to 1952, was after a wartime move to Exeter where he became involved with the local club.  Life Membership was bestowed on him in 1952.  Among his other attainments was the Club Honours badge for his marathon performances and his membership of the Centurions that exclusive body of people who have walked 100 miles in 24 hours, which he accomplished in the London to Brighton and back race in 1947.

In later years Gordon retired to just outside Bath and typically became involved with local Clubs and events while, until ill health prevented it, he would return to Wimbledon for our more important fixtures as a timekeeper or recorder.  On these occasions he was ever ready with recollections of races he had seen, and athletes he had known.  A fund of tales which he always related in a quiet manner. In addition he kept in touch with a wide rage of members and was always keen to hear the latest news or answer our queries.

It is only fitting to end this tribute with the words written by the late Alf Harley in the Belgravian of December 1969, ending his description of "Doub" as the new President "All this, plus his pleasing personality, his ability to enthuse, and his great loyalty to Belgrave make us fortunate indeed in our selection of President."  A tribute those who knew him would all endorse.
