36th IAAF World Cross Country Championships - Edinburgh, 30 March 2008

Above: First of the long laps for the senior women and Ethiopia's Mestawet Tufa heads the field .. but a lap later and with only 500m to go Tirunesh Dibaba puts in a huge effort to go clear. These and all other photos on this page by Alan Mead.

Above: Men's race lap three, first of the long laps, and Kenenisa Bekele is not at the front - much to the amazement of the photographers and spectators.  He'd lost his shoe and had stopped to replace it, perhaps losing 35 places.

Above: ... but he soon worked his way nearer the front, here lying 8th.

Above: At the end of three laps Phil Wicks was third Briton, ahead of Mike Skinner who is about to start moving through.

Above:  Lap five draws to a close and Bekele is back, right where he likes to be, on the leader's shoulder.

Above: Also on the fifth lap, Andew Lemoncello is in Mike Skinner's sights.

Above: Frank Tickner has justified his selection after injury, having moved ahead of Phil Wicks. And we believe that this was Belgravian Martin Dent's seventh World Cross for Australia.

Above: Last lap and Bekele is away, leaving Leonard Komon (Kenya), Zersenay Tadese (Eritrea) and Joseph Ebuya (Kenya) to fight it out for the lesser medals.

Above: Craig Mottram (Australia) and Tom Humphries - Australia's and Britain's best.

Above: a great run came from Blackheath's Mike Skinner (left), and Andi Jones (right) also did well, here ahead of Phil Wicks and Andrew Lemoncello as they near the finish.

Above left: Marty Dent has given everything - he closes in the Aussie team to 9th place.  Right: She's not fat and she's not singing - but it's all over!
