Scot
comes from a sports loving family.
He
was an over-active child and as a result entered into many
different games where he was able to gain a measure of success.
He represented his school in football, rugby and basketball, and
won numerous medals at golf and swimming but, like his father before him,
it was in the throwing events that he really excelled.
Bill, Scot’s Dad, was a champion in discus and shot before he got
a “proper job” that would support a wife and family, and younger
sister Lisa was Scottish discus and shot putt champion at various times
between 1995-1999. In 1995 Lisa was ranked first in the UK for her age
group in the shot putt! Joining
Belgrave Harriers in October 1998, Scot immediately made an impact in our
National Junior League team, very often competing in all four throws, and
made a huge contribution in helping to get the team to the national final
of 1999 and winning the National Final in 2000.
His part in this success was recognised in 2000 when he was awarded
the Belgrave’s “Bill Merryman Trophy” for the Young Belgravian of
the Year. The
transition from junior to senior ranks is a tough one for throwers but
there is every sign that Scot is handling it well.
The four event Power Test – a combination of overhead shot,
standing long jump, standing three jumps and 30 metre sprint – puts him
among the top three British athletes of all time, beating the likes of
Mike Winch, Linford Christie and John Regis.
He has appeared in our British League Division One team in 2001 and
2002 and it’s looking as if he is going to be relied upon as heavily in
our senior teams as he was in our junior ones. Scot
has been Scottish Champion for Discus 1995-1999, Scottish Shot Putt
Champion in 1995 and on two other occasions; he has also been Indoor
Champion two or three times as well.
We don’t have all the details but he has represented Great
Britain & Northern Ireland eleven times in under 20 and under 23
competition and set a Celtic Games record for the discus with 54.24m in
1998. We
would welcome further information regarding Scot’s international record
and his Scottish Championship wins. |
