05

Victory 5 miles road race, Portsmouth.

A mob of about twenty runners went through the first mile in 4:40 and they were still together after three miles where Kebede (Herc Wimb) and Tadesse started injecting short bursts at the front.  That fourth mile was the quickest of the race and resulted in the leading pack disintegrating until it was Stephen Sharp going into the last mile in the lead.  The race was far from over though and, still feeling the previous week's international cross country in his legs, Steve had to give way to Chepkwony (Army) who hit the front with 1000 metres to go and held it to the finish.

Birhan Dagne has advanced a lot since her last race but she still had to give best to Getenesh Tamirat who smashed our club record by 47 seconds.  Birhan was also comfortably inside the old mark, Gabby Collison's 27:54 from 1995.

04

Oxford University vs Cambridge University, Wimbledon Common 7.5 miles CC.

Not one, but two Belgravians featured in this traditional inter-varsity race held on Wimbledon Common, and run over a course that still goes through Beverley Brook - a practice we abandoned around 1960.  Jonathan Blackledge had the misfortune to badly turn his ankle during a 'recce' on the Common the previous weekend and it was touch and go as to whether he'd be able to turn out. He did - and with a fine run threw up the rare occurrence of a fresher placing in the first three.  It was so good to see Richard Ward back in action after suffering from glandular fever.  With a lot of work to do to get back to top fitness Richard was back in 15th for most of the race but came on strong towards the end to move up to 8th.

1 F.Thompson (Oxford) 38:14; 2 J.Blackledge (Oxford/Bel) 38:32; 8 R.Ward (Cambridge/Bel). Teams: 1 Oxford 38; 2 Cambridge 42.

Great South Run 10 miles, Portsmouth.

Two and a half miles into the race David Anderson got a twinge in his Achilles tendon that immediately had him turning off the gas.  He jogged on to the 5 mile point with no further trouble and after some ice and attention is as right as rain.  Having only recently come back from a four month lay-off he didn't want to take any risks - especially with some big races looming.

Kassa Tadesse was in fine fettle to finish just a couple of seconds shy of cracking 49 minutes and Jonathan Blackledge was delighted to remove a minute and a half from his best time. It was new territory also for John Clarke who went a full two minutes better than ever before.

Elmbridge 10k. Full result   Pictures

Well over 500 runners congregated for the Elmbridge 10k, among them 10 Belgravians, a couple of whom had their eyes on the course record of 30:37 which had stood to Blackheath Harrier Gary Arthy's name since 1991.

It wasn't really until the second half that the fireworks started when Mark Thompson, realising that the record was slipping away, took up the initiative and pushed the pace up a notch or two.  Kassa tucked in behind and gradually, in spite of the gritty surface along the towpath that didn't give the best footing, the record came back into view.  Passing The Weir it was Kassa now ahead with Mark a few metres down but looking very comfortable.  It was a twisty run into the finish though and although "Thommo" closed right up, he was unable to come through for the win.  It will be an interesting battle when they clash again in the AAA 10 Championship.

Great to see David Anderson back in action after a two month lay-off due to Achilles tendon problems. He's sure to be a minute faster when the AAA race comes around. With Hassan Raidi churning out another solid run it was four men home in four for a perfect score.

Just one week away from his 40th birthday Marcello Bizio took to the roads again and was pleased with his first race in years - and his last before becoming a veteran.

Men. 1 K.Tadesse 30:33; 2 M.Thompson 30:34; 3 David Anderson 31:23; 4 H.Raidi 32:25; 8 R.Alsop 33:17; 13 L.Greatorex 34:20; 15 T.Hadfield 34:39; 28 M.Humphrey 36:32; 48 M.Bizio 37:58; 150 P.Cross 42:01. Teams 1 Belgrave; 2 Ranelagh; 3 Belgrave 'B'.

Nonsuch 4 x 2.2 miles Relay, Nonsuch Park, Cheam.  Statistics

Thommo smashes Gary Staines's Nonsuch record.

Hopes of providing two balanced teams that would fight it out between them were dashed when some last minute withdrawals meant that we had to prevail upon Adam Leane to run twice and get a guest, Elmbridge's Richard Maclachlan to help us complete our second team.  Looking for a guest runner provided the evening's amusement.  Organiser Dave Denton's announcement: "Does anyone want to run for Belgrave to help them finish a team," was greeted with jeers and then a quip from some wag, "What's the matter.  Hasn't Haile GebreSelassie turned up!"

GebreSelassie?  Who needed him when Mark Thompson was in action.  Thommo stormed the Nonsuch circuit on leg three in a blistering 9:55 to crack the course record, previously owned by Gary Staines.  He was the first man ever to go under 10 minutes for the 2.2 miles lap.  Lee Greatorex ran his best ever time, as did Rob Marcus and James Browne, the latter back at last from long term injury problems.

Guildford & Godalming ran well to become the first non-Belgrave team to crack 45 minutes.

1 Belgrave 42:55; 2 Guildford & Godalming 44:24; 3 Epsom & Ewell 45:53; 6 Belgrave B & guest 48:22.

B - R.Marcus (7) 11:27; J.Browne (4) 10:49; R.Maclachlan (Elmbridge) 14:42; A.Leane 11:24.

Dorking 10 miles. Pictures

In hot and humid conditions seven Belgravians explored the Surrey countryside south of the M25.  Bedford's Huw Lobb was in unfriendly mood, wanting to be alone and offering an opening 2 miles of 10 minutes flat to ensure that he had his way - but even he suffered as the race wound on.  "Leaney" was forced to make two emergency pit stops and was unable to trouble our three marathon men whose strength held them in good stead. It was prizes nearly all round as our first four men took the open team race, Will picked up the individual county championship title and silver Surrey team medals went to Will, Adam Leane and Lee Greatorex.

1 H.Lobb (Bedford & County) 52:56; 3 W.Cockerell 54:33; 6 J.Wolf 56:35; 10 T.Hadfield 58:18; 16 A.Leane 59:01; 26 L.Greatorex 60:31; 40 M.Webb 63:17; 119 P.Cross M45 72:21.

Open team race: 1 Belgrave 35; 2 Guildford & Godalming 53; 3 Stragglers 116; 19 teams closed in. County team race: 1 Guildford & Godalming; 2 Belgrave H.
