Road Relay Ramblings - September 12, 2004 A quick dispatch to thank all the supporters, managers and, of course, scamperers for making yesterday so enjoyable. I am already feeling much better about Surrey League 1 on Oct 9. What with yesterday’s 24 runners, and another 20 or so athletes who were elsewhere, I deduce we could yet muster a scoring 10 to have Thames and Herne Hill sweating. But those 10 scorers will all need to be in the top 35 to grab the win – that’s how competitive the Surrey League is these days. The man-of-the-match award for yesterday is a close call between the three newer members of the squad: what an excellent role they did in setting up the race for the ‘old-stagers’ Rog, myself and Knut to run without toooo many concerns. Mark did exactly what he was told in coming home within a minute of the leader and sticking to the experienced Karl Corpez of Aldershot like a limpet. They tied. Great to see Leaney coming back into fine shape after a quiet past few months; but my man-of-the-match goes to Lee for a very fast run under easily the most pressure of the day. Nick Altmann set about him like an angry Rottweiler, and although Nick claims he’s not fit – I’ve never known him claim otherwise – he’ll always be one of the most dangerous runners in the county. That Lee came home only 20 seconds down was a job masterfully done. I’ll produce a basket of various man-of-the-match goodies for the winter’s winners at the now traditional Milton Keynes 'end-of-season' prize-giving. Finally, my very best of luck to all runners at the Rushmoor Arena in a fortnight – wish I could be there – but win or lose I’m sure it’ll be a terrific day. Dave, Hassan, Andy and I will try to strike gold for the Bels in the Great North.
