Final League positions. 1 Belgrave 32 (1386); 2 Newham & Essex Beagles 23 (1187.5); 3 Woodford Green wEL 23 (1178); 4 Birchfield H 20 (1129); 5 Sale H Manchester 17 (1022.5); 6 Shaftesbury Barnet 13 (1002); 7 Windsor SE&H 11 (946); 8 Trafford 5 (822). Match 4, Wigan 30 August 2003. 1 Belgrave 337; 2 Shaftesbury B 324; 3 Woodford GwEL 302; 4 Sale HM 267.5; 5 Birchfield 259; 6 Windsor SE&H 234; 7 Newham &EB 231.5; 8 Trafford 216. Youngest ever Belgrave team clinch league title With the World Championships in Paris and the World Student Games in Cheju, Korea involving several of our top athletes this late and last match at Wigan proved once again a difficult proposition for the team management. Last year several teams could muster fewer than 20 athletes. This year we, and many of the other teams, made a determined effort to support this fixture with greater numbers. We turned to our younger members to back a small but elite squad of experienced seniors to clinch the League title. And yet we still had gaps. Our competition started lamely with Mick Jones being partnered by the ever game Kevin Brown in the hammer and nobody in the pole vault! But soon it was precious points in the long jump before near maximum points in the discus followed by a high jump win from Ben Challenger who put aside his disappointment at missing out on Paris to support the team. A debut appearance in the 400m hurdles by junior Ryan Dinham followed, resulting in an excellent A string third place – a position emulated by under 23 Richard Ward in the A 800m. Adam Zawadski, back after missing the season through injury, gained maximum B string points in the 800m. Then last year’s top points scorer Graham Beasley ran one of his fastest 100 metres of the season followed by an equally impressive B string win in the 200m. Sixteen year old Wade Bennett-Jackson won his debut B 100m while under 23 Tim Abeyie won the A 200m in a time only 1/100th slower than Graham’s. With no specialist 400m runner present Chris Moss and Richard Ward stepped in for a handful of valuable points. ( And so depleted were we that we failed to put together a long relay squad for the closing event. Fortunately by then victory had been assured.) Contributing to an ultimately respectable points total were maximum points in the shot from under 23’s Greg Beard and Scot Thompson but with no recognised javelin exponent present we lost big points in the javelin. However this was our last glitch as the middle distance men sealed the win. First Spencer Barden ran away from a first class 5000m field only to repeat the feat 40 minutes later as he challenged a strong A and B combined 1500m field. Third in the A backed by Chris Moss’ win in the B gained more near maximum points. Junior Jonathan Blackledge made a fine debut at BAL level getting bronze in the B 5000m. Martin Dent fresh from more European travels still had enough fitness to finish second to Stuart Stokes in the 3000 steeplechase while Will Cockerell was disappointed not to break his pb. And the final icing on the cake was an attack on the GB Club junior 4 x 100m relay record (41.32) by a Belgrave squad comprising of Wade Bennett-Jackson, Laurence Oboh, James Ellington and Set Osho. They finished second to a strong Shaftesbury team and only just missed the record. And so another league win – the seventh consecutive one to add to our earlier Jubilee Cup victory. The details of points scorers and other statistics will be added to the website in the near future . Meanwhile here are a few facts to be getting on with. 1. In this match the team included :- 2 under 17’s, 4 under 20’s and 5 under 23’s to make this the youngest ever team to compete for the Club in the Senior men’s British Athletics League. 2. Under 17 World Youth Games finalist Chris Gearing guested in the men’s shot and propelled the 7kg implement to 15.43m – a distance which would have won the B match if Scot Thompson had not been competing and of course broke the Club age record by a huge margin 3. In 2003 Scot Thompson amassed an incredible 129 points to put him at the top of Belgrave’s all-time list ahead of Jon Ridgeon ( 113 points in 1992), and Graham Beasley (101 points in 2002). 4. 6 athletes competed in all four of the 2003 BAL fixtures for Belgrave. These are:- Paul Beaumont (now a veteran!), Greg Beard, Kevin Brown, Julian Flynn, Seni Majekodunmi and Scot Thompson. 100m: A (1.3) 1 N.Smith (Shaftesbury B) 10.50; 2 Graham Beasley (Belgrave) 10.52; 3 M.Findlay (Newham &EB) 10.67; 4 A.Matthews (Windsor SE&H) 10.84; 5 S.Barnes (Birchfield) 10.90; 6 A.Hall (Woodford GwEL) 10.95; 7 G.Jones (Sale HM) 10.98; 8 L.Baird (Trafford) 11.12. Oooh! That was so close! A strong team seven days before the event deteriorated as match day approached and with athletes chasing fast times overseas, others injured, some on holiday and some simply not turning up on the day, we found ourselves under extreme pressure. The track races started with Veteran Paul Beaumont being elevated to the A 400 hurdles, leaving the B race devoid of a claret and gold vest - the first of three such events during the afternoon. Hammer thrower John Osazuwa was another to move up to an A slot with discus specialist Scot Thompson forsaking quality for quantity as he took part in all four throws in a huge effort keep us competitive. A strong Woodford Green outfit was going great guns with Newham & Essex Beagles slowly easing up to them and an early points score had the Bels as low as 6th. It took an hour of hard grafting before we were able to move into 5th thanks to some solid running from the 400m boys - with Geoff Dearman delighted to dip under 48 again - and Chris Moss working his way back to the big time with his second 1:48 800 clocking of the weekend. Seni Majekodunmi has become a triple jump first team regular in 2003 and he branched out to fill another gap - this time the high jump - where he backed up Richard Aspden and they both claimed 3rd places. A season's best came from discus man Kevin Brown, thus ensuring that Scot Thompson scored heavily in the B. The 100 metres brought us two more 3rd places and Darragh O'Farrell made his league debut to place 4th in the long jump with Julian Flynn heading the B competition. Another debutant, Matt Wedge, got up to 2nd in the B sprint hurdles. Greg Beard was cock-a-hoop with his shot putt pb of 17.07m set at Ashford the previous day and he celebrated with his second best ever of 17.05 for yet another 3rd place. The Bels had now moved into 4th but with the end of the match in sight, normally cheerful team managers were shaking their heads in despair, knowing that it would be difficult to get a strong team out for match four in Wigan. It was "all over for 2003" and "goodbye to Europe for 2004". But now came the recovery. We had already seen some top class middle-distance running in the 800m but some sparkling front running from Spencer Barden in the 1500m gave us another classic. A sub-59 first lap by Birchfield's Murdoch was followed by Spen pushing the pace along to 1:59 at 800m and 3:00 at 1200. Only three men were in contention now - Spen, Steve Sharp and John Rogers of Sale. It was still Spen ahead with a mere 30 metres left but the Sale man lunged at the line and got the verdict. Great times and great points for us though - and two season's bests. We are used to seeing Graham Beasley excel in league 200s but were delighted to see 17 year-old James Ellington hold his form in the face of pressure from past European Champion Dougie Walker to clinch a super double win. Hassan Raidi attempted to go with the leaders in the 5k but faded badly over the last few laps while the more conservative Will Cockerell, last after a couple of laps, wound it up as the race progressed and was not far from his best ever - outstanding bearing in mind the 30° temperature. Newham were now leading the match from Woodford with Belgrave 3rd but it was close - and closer still after the drama of the sprint relay. The Bels were away but a dropped baton by the Beagles at the second takeover did their hopes no good at all. They had the presence of mind to recover the stick and finish the race in last place whereupon the last man threw down the baton in disgust and uttered an expletive in his frustration. It wasn't as if his words were aimed at an official or another athlete - but he was disqualified for his actions - a penalty made even harsher when it was realised that Shaftesbury and Woodford had already been dq'd for zone infringement. The 8th place that the Beagle had thrown away was actually worth six points. The net result was that with two events to go Newham & Essex Beagles now led the Bels by one point! The steeplechase: Beagler Dave Mitchinson had already run the 5k and now gamely turned out again to keep his club's hopes alive but it was clubmate Robinson who forced the pace and opened up around 50 metres on our own Kevin Nash. With Mitchinson heading Simon Marwood in the B race it looked as if the Beagles would extend their lead. While Simon shredded a little toe in his fight with Mitchinson, Kevin edged closer to Robinson as the last lap approached. Still 30 metres down at the bell, he closed rapidly round the turn, got to within 10 metres in the back straight - and flew the final turn with water jump barrier untouched as he hurdled it at full speed to storm away to a 7 second win. Instead of losing four points we'd come out even! The management were confident of pulling off the long relay with Tim Benjamin anchoring a squad of Dearman, Bayley and Osho that would surely already be leading - and so it proved. But now the Essex men faced another disqualification when a man clearly took the baton before the start of the takeover zone. We won in the end by 15 points having gone into the lead on the very last event. But for the dqs we'd have lost by a single point. Note: although the official results include wind readings for the track events, as they are all apparently 0.0 it is assumed that no actual wind reading was recorded.

It's looking like a two horse race as Bels and Beagles break away Being a team manager should come with a health warning! Once again the League clashed with a number of other high power meetings including BMC speed trials at Watford and three (yes three) AAE fixtures which had been inserted into the fixtures calendar at a late date after all was thought to be done and dusted. This time Belgrave lost 17 of it’s A team men to clashing fixtures and in some events such as the javelin and hammer where we have little depth we saw a large drop in points. But the positive side was that many of our juniors and recent juniors seized the opportunity to make their mark at the top level with Scot Thompson competing in all four throws as he concentrated on dispatching the discus sufficiently far to ensure selection for the European Under 23 Championships. Graeme Oudney and Derek Watson completed our young Scottish contingent and ensured good middle distance points although we couldn’t muster a B team 800 man. The meeting itself got off to a less than slick start due to massive jams on the M6 which prevented many officials reaching the venue including Simon Fennel (the match scorer with his laptop and software). Fortunately all our early competitors had stayed overnight at the local Holiday Inn and were invited to the official opening after refurbishment. Highlights included a 30 minute stand up act from comedian Tom O’Connor followed by a barbecue and refreshments. Newham and Essex Beagles had also reserved the same hotel and it soon became clear that they had assembled a team which could well reverse the Match 1 result where they had pushed us hard to the end. And so it turned out. With hand cranked scoring, a shortage of officials to operate distance boards and flags on the jumps it was not clear how we were progressing until the first match score after seven events confirmed our worst fears – we were trailing Newham by a big margin. And yet we were scoring well with a sensational double win in the long jump. Nobody present could remember when this was last achieved and all credit to stalwart Julian Flynn who won the B event with a season’s best. But the star performance belonged to 18 year Onen Eyong who has trained little this year due to A levels and missed last season due to injury. His spring off the board caused a lot of positive comments from fellow competitors. It was not until mid afternoon that events turned our way signalled by Sean Baldock’s victory over Du’aine Ladejo in the 400 in his season’s best time. And then it came thick and fast with Dave Anderson winning a truly exciting 5000 by the thickness of a vest followed by double wins in the high hurdles with Dominic Girdler claiming a pb despite hitting hurdle seven and Noel Levy powering through to take the B race on the dip. But all the time Newham were there or thereabouts and we just couldn’t make big inroads into their lead. It was not until event 13 (out of 19 total) that we achieved some daylight. First Graham Beasley powered into a bend headwind to clock his season’s best in the 200 to be followed by Tim Benjamin emulating the win and gaining his season’s best as he cruised to a fine B string victory in this his first outing in Belgrave colours. But Newham were hanging in with silver and bronze performances. We then won the sprint relay with our fastest time since the 2001 European Clubs Cup but Newham were second. But then to event 18, the steeplechase, where Martin Dent repeated his match 1 victory. Instead of Kevin Nash in support we had a debut performance from Simon Marwood which not only ensured maximum points but also lowered his pb by 6 seconds. (Kevin had already lowered his 1500 pb so we had a trio of happy chasers). And more to the point Newham had a seventh and a fifth placing which meant we lined up for the long relay knowing that Newham needed to win and we would have to be disqualified for Match victory to be denied. And we were not let down as the Michael Parper handed to Geoff Dearman (making a welcome season debut after injury) in third place - a position not relinquished on the last leg by Dan Donovan who once again doubled both relays in addition to his 100 outing. At the end of a nail biting afternoon the general consensus was that Match 3 is going to be something special. 100m:

BAL blast-off amidst fixtures chaos One week to midsummer's day; temperatures hovering in the mid 20's and here we were at the first Div 1 League match of the year. Has the fixtures supremo gone mad? Well yes. Because on the same day the BMC organised a series of paced middle distance races, The AAA's ran it's middle distance U20 and U23 Championships, UK Athletics held a National sprint relay squad training camp and AAA's of England had taken a team to Latvia. The atmosphere among the team managers trying to get the League off to a decent start was one of increasing frustration and suppressed anger as this joint fixture with the women's league got under way. The timetable started at 11.00am with the pole vault and discus, while the track started at 12.00a.m with the 400H followed by the 800. The discus was thought to be problematic with Kevin Brown, having his first comp after injury, up against 21 year old Scot Thompson. Together they managed two seconds to gain bonus points. Then Matt Douglas ran to a storming win in the A 400H, setting the third fastest time by a GB athlete this year, only to be frustrated by the electric clock failing to stop as he crossed the line in the mid 49.8's. Paul Beaumont called up as a late replacement for Noel Levy broke the club vets record in finishing fifth in the B event. He was later drafted into the B 400 when Michael Parper failed to toe the line having reported a tight hamstring. The 800 saw a welcome return to these shores by Alasdair McLean Foreman, who although still jetlagged ran a very respectable 1.51.33 to gain fourth in the A race. Inter Counties Champion Tim Bayley had equally tough competition in the B race giving too much space to Matt Shone who is also a fast finisher. But more good points and after 3 events we were well ahead of our points predictions. Then to the 100 where in the A event Lawrence Oboh's blocks slipped but Dan Donovan made amends by winning the B in his first race for the club on home shores. At this point it became clear that we were not getting wind readings - a situation that frustratingly persisted all afternoon- and prevented us from knowing just how strong the head winds were for the sprinters. Then to the hammer, later in the programme than usual, where John Osazuwa made a welcome return ensuring he and Mick Jones walked off with near maximum points. And on the track we were about to get our only maximum points (and in the steeplechase too) with Martin Dent breaking the Stadium record and Kevin Nash recording his third sub 9 minute clocking of the year. What a change in fortune for Kevin and so fully deserved after a period of hard training. (And he filled the B 1500 slot to back up Spencer Barden who was also out kicked by Matt Shone to finish third in the A 1500). By now the Belgrave supporters were beginning to relax and enjoy the spectacle as the lead stretched to 20 points. Next up one of the closest races of the afternoon the 110H which the strong headwind failed to upset. Dominic Girdler finished a brilliant second to Damien Grieves but had the satisfaction of gaining Chris Baillie's scalp by the narrowest of margins. Dominic later achieved star status by running the last leg of the long relay in an official split time of 47.4 as he chased Iwan Thomas (Newham) and Chris Rawlinson (Trafford). Not bad for someone who does no endurance work- or so he claimed! And noteworthy too was the 47.6 split of Tim Bayley running his first one lapper since moving up to the 800. We won't mention the flat 400 except to say that Dan Donovan stepped in at the last moment in to what was a hot A race won in 46.86 by Mark Brown of Newham. With wins for Tim Abeyie in the A 200 and Stuart Faben in the A javelin plus a terrific 2.10 high jump from Samson Oni we moved to an invincible lead sustained by good points in the shot and triple jump. A special mention for Scot Thompson who has made that big step from the junior ranks to compete with great credit in three of the throws where he was rewarded with a 5m pb in the javelin. All in all another great team effort boosted by a
tremendous spirit of camaraderie and enthusiasm from athletes and supporters alike led by our number one supporter Sir Eddie. 100m:
