Match 4, Terence McMillan Stadium, Plaistow, 31 July 2004.

Hot competition -

but we are British Champions for an 8th successive year

1 Belgrave H 340; 2 Woodford Green with Essex Ladies 308; 3 Birchfield H 285; 4 Sale H Manchester 264; 5 Enfield & Haringey AC 258; 6 Thames Valley H 258; 7 Shaftesbury Barnet H 254; 8 Newham & Essex Beagles 218.

This, the last match of the season, promised to be hot in more ways than one, with air temperatures soaring above 30C (and the track too hot to walk on) plus a feast of high quality athletics. A strong Belgrave squad had been assembled in the knowledge that three teams were fighting to avoid relegation. As it turned out Belgrave were to cruise to a third successive win but a tremendous fight back by Sale was to result in TVH and a surprised Shaftesbury Barnet being relegated. Or maybe not, as Shaftesbury launched a complaint against the eligibility of one of Sale’s athletes, which, if upheld, would radically alter the lower order positions – so close was the fight for points.

The opening four field events saw a lone Mick Jones again throw over 73m to win the hammer. A delayed pole vault (equipment failure) got to Cameron Johnston who ran through three times at 4.60 but junior Roy Collier produced a huge pb of 3.40 to gain unexpected points in the B comp. Leith Marar made a welcome return to Belgrave colours and gained good discus points ably supported by Chris Gearing who produced a pb to ratchet up the points total. Chris was later to launch the shot to 16.99 for another personal best ever. Few of the spectators realised that he is still only 17 years old and ranked 5th in the world for his age. Meanwhile in a high quality long jump junior Bernard Yeboah produced a 7.48 pb into a headwind. Darragh O’Farrell backed up well to win the B and we were on our way. Darragh later showed his past decathlete credentials with a creditable support performance for Tom Dobbing in the javelin and also the shot.

The track events kicked off at 1.45pm and saw Matt Douglas, tired after his exertions at the previous night’s Grand Prix, do enough to ensure max A points supported by a silver position from an over raced and tired Ryan Dinham in the B. Next up the A 800 with Tim Bayley guesting to help training partner, and Athens bound, Michael East to a fast 800 victory which was only .09 sec outside the League record set by Seb Coe in 1987. Steve Sharp followed through the opening lap in 53 secs (which was possibly a 400 best) and struggled thereafter. Tim Abeyie was another who had raced at Crystal Palace the night before; slipped blocks put paid to his 100m aspirations here, although he recovered for third spot, while Graham Beasley ran slightly faster to get fourth spot in the B – of such high quality was the sprinting. Wade Bennett Jackson (WBJ) then won the first of two guest 100’s in a pb 10.45sec with zero wind – a time which would have won both the A and B events; another 17 year old proving that youth need not be a handicap! He later won the B 200 and contributed to the fastest Belgrave sprint relay time of the season.

Meanwhile Ben Challenger and Samson Oni were winning the high jump, A= and B, followed by near max points in the triple jump won by Julien Kapek, making his first appearance since joining Belgrave last year, and well backed by David Wellstead who had an effort close to 14.90m judged to be a marginal foul. Another 17 year old, Gavin Selway, got thrown into the deep end in the 400 A and ran close to his best while decathlete William Sharman ran his first 400 of the season to get good points in the B.

Spare some sympathy for the 5000m boys who ran in the heat of the day at 14.50 pm. Mark Miles sat on the leader for 10 laps before sprinting the last 800 to take 13 seconds off Irish International Fiachra Lombard. Jonathan Blackledge won the B race by a similar margin to ensure another max points result. More good points in the sprint hurdles with Dominic Girdler showing he is now fully recovered from an injury which has taken more than a year to mend. Graham Beasley then almost made it max points in the 200m. He was given second spot in the A in a fast time but couldn’t be separated on time from the winner Paul Hession – it was that close. Spencer Barden was determined to give Matt Shone a tough race by taking out the 1500 but Shone stuck like a leach only to produce his usual fast finish to grab victory – a quite remarkable effort after his earlier 800 silver. Darren Gauson ran well in a physical scrap behind the leaders to get third spot in the B.

And so to the closing stages.

Dominic Girdler led out the sprint relay squad who had been instructed to get the baton round with safe changes. Then to Graham who ran his usual storming back straight with Wade taking the bend to hand over to Tim Abeyie in third spot. Tim gave it some welly to make up ground and while the team managers thought he hadn’t quite made it the photo finish equipment was to prove otherwise. A fine and fast win from an untried quartet.  It was good to see Kevin Nash toe the line for the chase having started training just a week ago following injury. Sadly he was the sole representative for Belgrave, which shows our lack of depth in this specialist event. (Mind you that rather reflects the position in the country as a whole.) Kevin has three weeks to regain some fitness for the Cup Final.

And so to the last event, the long relay, with all team managers checking points positions to see what was required. Our squad knew that there was no pressure but Graeme Oudney was out to prove a point after a disappointing B 800. He ran an excellent split of 49.4, as too did Tim Bayley with a pleasing 47.7 last leg to seal our match and League wins. President Don Anderson received the trophy for our 8th consecutive year as Champions and the target is now 10 in a row. With so many up and coming juniors who would bet against this squad! See you in 2005.

If all BAL team managers were paid, this is a week when they would have earned their wedge. With just one week before the AAA’s Olympic trials the BAL offered local competition of a high order for aspiring Athens-bound athletes. But inevitably many chose to train rather than compete while others selected hotter climes in an attempt to attain Olympic qualifying standards as an insurance against AAA’s disappointment. And additionally UKA had organised an under 20 International against Australia while the AAA’s somehow thought that a low key fixture in Cork was a good idea. We lost eight of our A team men to the U20 match and two to Cork. Take all that and a further 4 athletes withdrawing due to illness and you get the picture. It was tough for us and all Division 1 clubs.

So there we were, a brave band of 25 aiming to strengthen our number one slot. And what a performance they produced, with several pb’s and a quite astonishing League record from Justin Chaston, ensuring a win by the smallest of margins from host club Birchfield.

With five field events taking place before the first track contest we knew that they could provide the key to motivating the rest of the team. And they did not disappoint; with Mick Jones winning the A hammer by a 5m margin while John Osazuwa gave us second spot in the B. Then Cameron Johnston took some quality scalps to secure second in the A pole vault with Mark Allen gaining equal second in the B in blustery conditions. Two more second places followed in the long jump with Darragh O’Farrell leading Jonathan Moore until the last round and Will Sharman starting a busy afternoon that was to ensure he remained our top points scorer in 2004. Good points followed in the discus with Abi Ekoku again winning the B event. Scot Thompson was a bit below par but made amends later in the shot where again he was partnered by Abi in Chris Gearing’s absence.  And then two firsts in the high jump with both Ben Challenger and Samson Oni looking sharp; the now gale force headwind had it’s effect on the heights although Ben had one close call at 2.25.

So as the track started we had amassed 109 points from a possible maximum of 140 to give us a clear lead which was to be first widened and then reduced in a nail-biting climax. Noel Levy was our sole 400 hurdler and responded with a fine win in the continuing difficult conditions. Then an injured Chris Moss insisted on competing in the 800 and gained an excellent second spot to Matt Shone a position repeated in the B event by the improving Darren Gauson who was to add further good points in the 1500 which was won easily by a front running Spencer Barden seeking a speed test before the AAA’s 5000. Then to the 100’s with Mark Lewis Francis heading a strong Birchfield challenge. Graham Beasley, complete with blistered foot, sustained in an earlier race in Genoa, held his nerve after a false start to get a fine third spot after his blocks slipped and he had given the field a three metre start. Darren Chin looks to be back after injury as he just held on for maximum points in the B. But both sprinters were not up for the 200 because of their recent injuries and the imminence of the Olympic trials but last minute substitutes Geoff Dearman and Louis Evling Jones acquitted themselves well with the AAA’s newly crowned decathlon champion setting a pb in the B event.

Meanwhile in the triple jump Seni Majekodunmi was gaining the scalp of International Tosin Oke and almost caught Larry Achike to finish a crucial third in the A event. Over at the javelin new member Tom Dobbing returned some respectability to this event (after the sudden early season retirement of Stuart Faben) and was ably backed up by long jump specialist and former decathlete Darragh O’Farrell.

The 400 was expected to be a problem following the withdrawal the day before of specialists Sean Baldock, Set Osho and Gavin Selway due to sickness. But Geoff Dearman stepped up to the plate and ran his best race of the season in the A and Louis Evling Jones gained second spot in the B to keep us ahead of a rapidly closing Birchfield who had two wins in the 5000. Jonathan Blackledge ran within 4 seconds of his pb to show he is over a virus infection but that was only good enough for sixth place in a classy race where Irish International Fiache Lombard could only make third spot. The high hurdles included one of the strongest fields with six of the contestants having pb’s of under 14 seconds. Will Sharman had the worst lane draw in 8 where the headwind was greatest. Nonetheless he ran an excellent 14.10 secs into what was officially a 0.8m/s headwind. Fellow decathlete junior Mark Allen ran a big pb to gain more valuable points in the B race.

And so to the concluding three events. First to the sprint relay where Graham Beasley and Darren Chin represented our total specialist sprint talent and were backed by decathletes - Will Sharman and Louis Evling Jones. Will is becoming a leadoff specialist and as in match 2 gave a respectable lead to Graham who extended it to provide the basis for a fine win in 41.28 secs. Then to the steeplechase where Justin Chaston looked superb as he led from the gun following a pre-race plan to run the first 1000m fast, ease for a 1000m, and then boot the last kilometre.  He finished fresh after this solo effort and one wondered if the Olympic A qualifying time would have gone with better conditions and some help with the middle order pacing. This was a new league record breaking the previous best of 8.35.0 set by Steve Hollings of Sale on the 24th August 1974. And long before the final event the team managers had decided it would be impossible to get a long relay team to the start line. Everyone had given a 110% effort to get to this point and there was just nothing left. The other teams thought we had done our sums and were safe but with the point scoring lagging behind the results we were far from certain. But as the long relay points were added in it became clear that we had won by a very small margin. Each and everyone’s contribution had been vital – not least that of our physio Emma Lilley who worked flat out all day to keep the show on the road.

Match 4 and the final result of this year’s league is now firmly in our hands. We can still lose it but will do our best not to. Roll on 31st July.

Justin’s travel troubles

Justin Chaston’s remarkable run in Birmingham on Saturday is even more special when you consider his travelling itinerary. Justin left Denver Colorado on Tuesday, switching airlines in New York before flying the red eye to arrive in Heathrow at 6.50 Wednesday morning. After a lengthy wait it became clear that his bags were somewhere else. (Still in New York) and he was not re-united with them until Thursday when he collected them from the airport before driving to Wales for a re-union with his grandparents. On Friday he drove to Birmingham to stay at the team hotel and the rest as they say is history. To what does Justin attribute his remarkable form? Living at Colorado Springs at 7000ft is the simple answer.

Match 2, Copthall Stadium, Enfield, 05 June 2004. Pictures

What a comeback ...

1 Belgrave H 333; 2 Shaftesbury Barnet H 291.5; 3 Newham & Essex Beagles 290; 4 Enfield & Haringey AC 266.5; 5 Woodford Green w Essex Ladies 265; 6 Sale H Manchester 251; 7 Thames Valley H 250; 8 Birchfield H 241.

Match two proved as exciting, unexpected and unpredictable as the first. And the final result was an almost complete reversal of Match 1, meaning that the Bels had climbed from fourth spot to a clear League lead in an astonishing come back which not even the team managers had expected.

Team selection had been problematic with a number of athletes opting to compete in the next day's Loughborough meet while several were choosing to compete on both days and a few just staying with the League match.

The start was not as promising as Match 1 with reduced points in the hammer, pole vault and 400 hurdles. Both Matt Douglas and Mick Jones suffered rare defeats but Cameron Johnston equalled his pb in finishing a creditable fourth in the pole vault and narrowly missed his 5 metre attempts. But then the track kicked in to move us gradually ahead. A star studded 100m saw a rare defeat for Sale’s Darren Campbell while Tim Abeyie, just back from the States managed fourth in the A 100 closely followed by a Graham Beasley win in the B 100 -  later followed by Graham winning the A 200 and contributing to a fine sprint relay win. Then Chris Moss and Stephen Sharp collected our only max points of the day with two fine wins in the 800m while 800 specialist Tim Bayley went for the longer race and won the A 1500 in fine style front running the last 2 laps and using his strength to resist the surge of the chasing bunch.

In the sprint hurdles Dom Girdler made a welcome return after a year lost through injury and was rewarded with a legal sub 14 second clocking. Decathlete Will Sharman then ran a pb in the B 110 hurdles to gain second spot. More points and our lead was stretching. And in the 400m Sean Baldock in only his third race of the season reduced his season’s best by over a second, recording 46.50, but dipped early and had to settle for second. But the big surprise was junior Gavin Selway who was drafted in to the B 400 and came through the field to get another fine second spot.

The throws added much better points than Match 1 and the discus saw the welcome return of Abi Ekoku who had not picked up the discus this year but, working from memory, approached 50m to win the B event. Meanwhile Scot Thompson massed big points competing in the discus, shot and javelin. Chris Gearing who earlier in the week had gained a World Junior qualifying mark with the 6kg shot proceeded to putt the senior implement to a new pb of 16.60m. Things were really looking up.

Left: Tim Bayley takes the 1500 metres.

In the long jump junior Bernard Yeboah had to settle for second too but jumped a season’s best legal 7.43. What a fine BAL debut for this talented young jumper.

The only positive in the middle distance was Will Cockerell’s pb in the steeplechase, but we had no B string so few points there. The 5000 was little better and the javelin was another poor event,  so suddenly an evenly matched chasing group got a little too close for comfort. It was all down to the relays!

The sprint squad comprised Will Sharman handing to Graham Beasley to decathlete Louis Evling Jones and to Tim Abeyie. With safe takeovers they were never troubled and Tim strutted down the home straight to the delight of the Belgrave supporters in a highly respectable 41.12. With slick handovers this squad could get close to 40 seconds.

And finally to the 400 led off by 800 man Chris Moss who had to be given a block session by Sean Baldock. Chris’s strength showed as he moved from last to first down the home straight. Next was Noel Levy who died at 350m and went back to third. Then came Michael Parper who again has been troubled with injury and several thought he might pull up. But to everyone’s surprise he stormed into the lead only to lose it in the last 50m but was rewarded with the fastest split on the leg of 47.6. Sean Baldock then cruised round to get to within 2/100’s of another win. But second in the long relay was fine and the time of 3.13.50 highly respectable.

So there it was. A big win which took us clear at the top of the League. The team managers had expected a season of attrition to claw back the Woodford Green lead but here they had been reduced to 5th spot so in one go we were out of jail. And in this topsy turvey world the bottom two clubs are now Sale and Birchfield. This is crazy  but it does make the League a lot more exciting. Birmingham July 3rd – Here we come!

Match 1, New River Stadium, Haringey, 08 May 2004.

Fancy a long shot ....

1 Woodford Green with Essex Ladies 354; 2 Enfield & Haringey AC 311; 3  Newham & Essex Beagles 291; 4 Belgrave H 289; 5 Thames Valley H 249; 6 Birchfield H 243; 7 Shaftesbury Barnet H 243; 8 Sale H Manchester 186.

Things looked bad. The AW correspondent was predicting that Belgrave were on their way to an 8th consecutive League title starting with this - the opening fixture for 2004. Bearing in mind AW had also asked who would be second to us in the 12 stage relay, and our subsequent silver medal, the omens were bad. And we knew that our top sprinters were still abroad, our middle distance men were in Balmoral, and our top thrower for 2004, Scott Thompson was competing in the Scottish Universities Champs while another top thrower Kevin Brown was out for the season with a torn patella tendon. And then James Ellington pulled up in the sprint relay while we were leading, Clifton Green failed to appear for the javelin due to a car accident which hospitalised him and the League secretary declared that long jumper Darragh O’ Farrell was not registered. So he had to compete as a guest even though he had competed in the League for us in 2003. The gods were conspiring against us.

And it was such a good start. Mick Jones not only won the hammer but broke Howard Payne’s long standing UK vets record in the process. One happy bunny. Then new man Cameron Johnston won the B pole vault, backing up second placed A string Paul Williamson to get near maximum points. The first track event saw our only double win with Matt Douglas shading the A 400mH and 18 year old Ryan Dinham posting a big PB in the B race followed by a 47.8 split in the long relay. So an excellent start.

But whereas in 2003 we got bad starts and recovered as the match progressed this time we were to fall away to an unexpected and disappointing 4th place. But it would have been even worse without many of our juniors and new members drafted in to fill the many gaps. To the fore were the John Anderson coached squad of 4 decathletes (Mark Allen, Louis Evling Jones, Kevin Sempers and Will Sharman) who together amassed 60 valuable points. These young men can only improve in the year’s ahead and already were making an impression against top UK specialists. Noteworthy were Will’s third spot in the A sprint hurdles and Kevin Sempers fourth spot in the A high jump. Will Sharman covered four events and finished up our top scorer with 22 points. Some debut!

Other noteworthy results were: Kevin Nash’s lone winning run in the chase and Will Cockerell’s double in the 5000 and chase despite the London marathon still being in his legs, Set Osho winning the B 400, James Ellington missing the World Junior qualifying time in the 200 by just 3 hundreds of a second and Steve Sharp and Jon Blackledge with two silvers in the 1500. Also looking good was 21 year old Darren Gauson who finished third in the B 800 in his inaugural race for Belgrave.

Woodford Green won in great style with League newcomers Haringey and Enfield taking second spot. Sad to see Sale in bottom spot ahead of escape artists Shaftesbury Barnet. Our chances of retaining our title are now very slim. If you fancy a long shot get down to the bookmakers and hope that AW write us off.
