Amy Spencer had been suffering from knee problems leading into the games but nevertheless was able to equal her outdoor 200m best of 23.45 as she won her first round race - the fastest of all the qualifiers. In the final she was battling for a medal as she entered the straight but faded a little and had to be content with fourth. No doubt a silver medal in the relay went some way towards relieving her disappointment. Unfortunately, the previous winner of the women's 200 metre title, our own Vernicha James, was unable to take her place in the line-up for the 2003 championship, having been unable to rid herself of the hamstring injury that has been dogging her since the indoor season. In the men's 200 metres James Ellington placed 2nd in his heat behind the 100m champion Helmke of Germany, his time of 21.36 being his second fastest ever for the distance. In a highly competitive final James went faster still and placed 6th, just 2/100ths outside his lifetime best, with 4th to 6th places all within 1/100th of a second. The mighty Laurence Oboh has had his winter conditioning plagued by injury but it's now looking as if he has put those problems behind him. His powerful back-straight run in the sprint relay put the British team right into contention and with two 100 metre finalists to follow the team powered to a win over Germany to claim the gold medals. c=26th, d=27th.
