European U23 Championships, Bydgoszcz, Poland, 17-20 July 2003

It’s beginning to look as if 2003 will be a big year for Chris Lambert.  Troubled by hamstring injuries in recent seasons, Chris put his worries behind him and produced the goods for coach John Powell, by racing to the gold medal in the European U23 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, last weekend.  Facing the home-crowd favourite Marcin Jedrusinski, who was fifth in last year’s European Championship in Munich, Chris ran a perfectly controlled bend to enter the straight on his rival’s shoulder.  A relaxed, powerful finish then brought him through to victory in the last few metres. The winning time of 20.34 was a personal record and also a full tenth and more inside the previous championship best.  It was also well inside the qualifying mark for August’s World Championships in Paris.  If he can carry through his success to this weekend’s AAA Championships and stays healthy then there is every hope that he will make a big impression in the major event of the year.

Chris also shared in the golden glory achieved by the GB 4 x 100 metres squad. The qualifying round saw a British team that was three-quarters Belgrave scrape into the final after a near disaster when lead-off runner Grant ran into a slowly starting Lambert.  But Belgrave team mates Darren Chin and Tim Abeyie (who also ran in the individual 200m) pulled the quartet into the last qualifying position.  Tim was replaced in the final by Edgar, to leave the team a mere 50% Belgrave, and this time all went well as they headed the French side by 7/100ths to win in 39.54.

Tim Benjamin set his best ever time of 45.71 to win his 400 metres heat but lining up for the final was feeling less than 100% as he prepared to do battle with the French European Junior Champion Leslie Djhone.  In fact the Frenchman ran a scintillating race and Tim had his work cut out to pursue, and finally overtake, the Pole Wieruszewski and claim the silver medal. The Belgrave man later admitted that Djhone would surely still have been the winner, even if he had felt better on the day, but he may have run a shade faster.

Goldie Sayers placed 11th in the Javelin, not so far behind her season’s best, but Scot Thompson must have been out of sorts as he was only able to manage 48.89 in the discus, some 7 metres down on his best for the year. We understand that Dominic Girdler had an injury problem and was unable to compete.
