Amy Spencer found herself up against one of the favourites in her heat of the 200 metres, the first track race of the championships. As expected European outdoor 200m Champion Muriel Hurtis (France) took the race comfortably in 22.75 but after an indifferent start Amy ran a powerful middle race and held off Gragila (Italy) in the final stretch to qualify for the semi-final stage.
That semi-final saw Amy joined by another 17 year-old - Allyson Felix (USA) - and who knows how many times this pair will clash again over the next decade. On this occasion neither progressed any further. It was Amy's first ever senior international and as she said when interviewed, it was a wonderful chance to gain experience and soak up the atmosphere.
Another Belgravian who met the event favourite in the first round was 800 metre-man Chris Moss. The Belgravian got well involved in the race, leading through the first two laps to reach 400 metres in 56.02, but soon after Daniel Kipketer (Denmark) took over and in the ensuing scramble Chris was relegated to 4th, a position he held until the finish. It was a strong run and although he'd like to have
produced a quicker time, was pleased with his performance and the way he'd been a factor in the way the race developed.
Having recently broken our club record and winning the trial ahead of the previous record holder Rachel King, Sarah Claxton was looking for yet more improvement. But things didn't go according to plan and at 8.33 she was two tenths down on her AAA time. As she told reporters "It wasn't very good. I've had a bit of a cold since the AAAs and missed a couple of days training. Maybe that took it out of me a bit. I felt good in warm-up. I don't know what happened. I was aiming for a PB. I wasn't too nervous in warm-up but maybe the occasion got to me."
While Sarah was disappointed with her performance, after the next heat Rachel King admitted to being very pleased. She ran right up to her recent form in qualifying for the semi-finals where she also was looking for a best ever time. In fact she did improve on her heat time in a "semi" led home by Gail Devers (USA) in a Championship best 7.80 but was
just outside her target. Good running in a pressure situation though.
Called away from his winter training to join the 4x400m squad Tim Benjamin impressed sufficiently in the heats of the relay to be asked to play his part again in the final. Running second leg, he took over from Jamie Baulch a couple of metres adrift of the USA team. Before the initial lap was completed the Jamaican
team member had squeezed past but Tim was confident of his pace and by the time his two laps had been completed he was right back in equal second having clocked what was to prove to be the fastest individual time from the British quartet. A well deserved bronze medal was his in his first major games as a senior athlete.
Having picked up a 4x400 medal in the World Junior Championships last summer, Amy Spencer was sure to be called upon for senior teams - and after her run here at Birmingham one can expect her to be a regular in future. Running the third stage, she received the baton in fifth place behind the Ukrainian runner with the Jamaican team occupying the bronze medal position, the Americans solidly in second and the Russians clear away at the front. Gradually closing down on the Ukrainian over the first circuit, she got her tactics just right and moved into fourth with 100 metres to go and then ran down the Jamaican until there was little between them at the end of her stint. Her 52.62 lap was second only in the British team to Catherine Murphy's 51.75 on the last leg and although the foursome just failed to pick up medals, they were rewarded with a new British record.

AAA
Champs & World Champs Trials a=1st, b=2nd.
Day
One
In
fine hurdling form of late, Sarah Claxton ran to a best ever 8.16 to win
her heat of the 60m hurdles (Rachel King won the other) and when it came
to the final Sarah went faster still to chalk up a surprise win, nick a
hundredth off Rachel's club record, and surely earn a place on the World
Champs team. With two personal bests on a day which left her 6th on
the UK all-time list, she was delighted. Rachel was a mere
2/100ths short of the qualifying time in third place and admitted to
being a bit disappointed.
Dwain
Chambers was a hundredth outside his best 60m time but was beaten in the
closest of finishes by
Birchfield's Mark Lewis-Francis. With Jason Gardner not competing
and only two slots available on the team it now looks as if Dwain will miss
the main competition of the winter; a great shame because after
only two races he is obviously coming into super form and could still
have been a World Champs medallist. Great running came from Darren Chin
in the final - his 4th place in 6.75 being his best ever.
Stephen Sharp ran to his best
indoor 3000m time while Jennifer Culley was just outside her personal
record in the 400 heats.
Day
Two
Three
Belgravians became AAA Champions. Again over 16 metres Eva Massey
took her first AAA title in the Shot Putt to confirm her position as the
UK number 1. In a slow 800m race Neil Speaight kept club mate
Chris Moss at bay but as Chris has the qualifying time and Neil
currently doesn't, it looks as if it will be "Mossy" wearing
the GB vest in a couple of weeks time. Equalling his best time Dominic
Girdler overcame a huge challenge from Newham's Duncan Mallin in the 60m
hurdles.
However,
one of the outstanding runs of the championship did NOT result in a win.
It came from Amy Spencer who at 200 metres clocked yet another UK Junior
record and moved to no. 3 on the UK all-time list behind only Katherine
Merry and Donna Fraser. Drawn on the outside with the Irish runner
Sheehy just inside her, Amy was caught coming out of the final turn but
closed again to finish a mere three hundredths away from the gold medal
winning run of the Irish girl who beat her National Record.
