Gold Cup - Comfortably into the final again

Semi-Final, Rugby, 10 June 2001.

Having had a bye in the first round, Belgrave entered the competition at the semi-final stage confident of making it to the final.  Dave Smith got things off on a strong footing by winning the hammer with a massive 73.30 while Phillips Idowu battled with Rugby’s Steve Phillips in the long jump.

Two events down and the Bels. had taken an early lead but the next half hour saw us drift back to 3rd behind Shaftesbury Barnet and City of Stoke as Will Cockerell manfully tackled his first ever track 10k in promising fashion and hurdler Richard Sear filled in for our crop of high jumpers – all of whom appear to be carrying injuries at the moment.  There were high hopes for young Andrew Bennett in the 400m hurdles but he tangled badly with a barrier coming off the final bend and crashed to the ground – luckily not badly hurt, but stunned enough to be unable to finish.

The 800 metres and on came Richard Ward.  Utterly confident, Rich took the lead after half a lap, stormed away from the field with a full 500m to go and never gave the rest any chance to catch him again, although Shaftesbury’s Kojo Kyereme, fresh from sprint action in our Speed Grand Prix during the week, did his best down the finishing straight.

From there on Shaftesbury’s lead was whittled down as event after event was headed by a claret and gold vest.  The powerful Graham Beasley took the short sprint and his emphatic win was matched later in the afternoon by Chris Lambert at 200m and Tim Bayley, 400m. While Kevin Brown and Lee Newman stitched up the discus and shot, Phillips was back in action in his speciality, the triple jump, and off a short run-up was almost into the pit before the jump phase.

Mark Miles had been in action in a BMC 1500m at Watford the previous day where he ran a 3:46 and here at Rugby he launched a withering finishing burst no less than 700m from the line.  A personal record came from Al Stewart in the 5000m where he closely tracked the Shaftesbury and Bedford runners as they alternated the lead but missed the break when one of those alternations, with two laps and a bit remaining, turned into Bedford’s Hugh Lobb’s successful bid for victory.  Al came back at him over the final circuit but the gap was just enough to ensure that in this race we were to be second.

Hurdler Richard Sear is in fine form and was the class of the high hurdles field but in the longest “barrier” event we were unable to turn out a runner at all; the only gap in our team.  Ian Mackenzie and Wesley Smith mopped up a 3rd and 2nd in the pole vault and javelin and with just the relays to go it seemed certain that we would win.  Two more first places confirmed it – especially when the North London club failed to finish in the sprint relay and then were among three clubs to be disqualified in the four lap event.

Information from Wood Green Stadium had been relayed by ‘phone during the afternoon and the news that our women’s team were also winners sealed a great afternoon.
