EUROPEAN
CLUBS' CUP 2001 – MADRID – 26/27 MAY 2001
|
|
|
It was a disappointing 5th for Belgrave
Harriers in the searing 36 degree heat of Madrid's Moratalaz Stadium
- but it could so easily have been 3rd or even 2nd place. The
standard of competition was awesome with the Russian club being
virtually a national squad plus the odd surprise package.
Dwain Chambers equalled the meeting record in the 100m and beat
Americans Dennis Mitchell (Partizan!) and Brian Lewis (Sports Club
Luch!) together with Nigeria's Francis Obikwelu (Sporting
Club!). Club records came in both relays - our first ever
sub-40 in the shorter one - and both times were so close to UK Club
Records. A massive 17.23m club record won Phillips Idowu the
triple jump - a distance which must be close to World leading jump
for 2001. Two huge long jumps from Thompson were ruled invalid
- one in the 8 metre region was clearly valid but the pit was raked
over while an appeal was being made and video equipment trained on
take-off board was subsequently found to be "not
working". A battling run from Neil Speaight required a
photograph to split him from the winner (same time). Tactical
running in the middle-distance events meant the times belying the
standard of the racing as Rui Silva (Sporting Club) twice defeated
Kenya's Laban Rotich (Panellinios). A muscle
"twinge" meant Darren Campbell was unable to run the 200m
and arrangements to replace him with Chambers came to nothing when a
transport problem meant that the latter did not get to the
stadium.
