Match
6, Southampton, 4 August 2001. Well,
we won’t go down, but our poorest score of the series was achieved by
a team that was just a shadow of itself.
Of
our 75 points no less than 30 were scored in the four throwing events
where Mike Small had a marvellous afternoon.
Our veteran thrower heaved a season’s best in the B hammer,
took the B javelin, produced one of his best ever shot put performances
since reaching veteran status and finally had the audacity to turn over
Heri Ziska to win the A discus. John
Osazuwa obliged with his regular hammer win and had the ground shaking
with a run down the back straight in the sprint relay. The
small team did all they could to cover most of the events and Alex
Kneller managed to pop out a winning triple jump among his six
competitions. Conditions were extremely windy but Kevin Brennan set a best
for the season in the 400m while Joachim Wolf and Brad Poore brightened
Belgrave spirits with battling performances in the 1500m - although both
were far from happy with the their times. Teams:

5, Sutcliffe Park, 21 July 2001. Just
eight men plus Team Manager for the day Don Anderson covered match five
at Sutcliffe Park and with such limited resources they did well to
tackle 24 events between them and hang on to 4th team place.
There have been days when we’ve done worse with a full squad! Teams:

4, Perivale, 08 July 2001. Star
of the team was John Osazuwa whose mighty 61.94 hammer throw gave us a
terrific start to the meeting. Further
good scores came our way in
the rest of the throwing events but this meeting threw up some speedy
track wins from the opposition and as the afternoon progressed, the
fight to keep pace with a rampant Kent AC team became a battle to stay
out of last place! It
was good to see distance runner Lloyd Catley back in action after a
period of ill-health, albeit in the unaccustomed role as 800m runner,
and newcomer Kevin Brennan made a welcome debut for the Bels. in the
400m. Will Cockerell found
that a Sunday meeting allowed him to experiment with racing whilst
enduring a Saturday hangover whilst one-time 400m man James Hilston
continued to pop up in all sorts of odd field events – but still
looked the real business in the long relay.
Surprisingly
we held pretty steady in the league but another bad performance in match
5 - which clashes with the Cup final - could see an almighty tumble
towards the bottom section of the table. Teams:

3, Tooting, 23 June 2001. With
the fixture almost at “home”, one would have thought that we might
have fared better but somehow things didn’t work out. Sadly we once
again had no steeplechasers and coupled with blank pole vault, high
hurdles and 4x400 metres slots on the team sheet, it was surprising that
we managed to place 3rd as a team. The
throws were good with Mike Small notching up three ‘B’ wins and an
‘A’ second and Mike and Heri Ziska teamed up for a rare double win
in the discus. An unusual
sight was hammer thrower John Osazuwa being reduced to a mere 2nd in
Southern League competition in spite of a 58m+ throw.
A
double first also came in the triple jump thanks to Ezra Clarke and
James Hilston and whilst not winning, the versatile James leaped an
impressive 2 metres in the high jump.
James Tuson and Alex Kneller ensured that we placed no lower than
2nd in high, long and triple jumps. The
middle-distance boys did particularly well.
Knut Hegvold patiently tracked Herne Hill’s Andy Weir for
almost the entire 5000 metres before moving up a gear on the last lap
for a comfortable win. Knut
turns 40 any time now and one of the Norwegian’s targets is a 2:20
marathon. Will Cockerell
made it a maximum-pointer by winning the B event.
At 1500 metres Joachim Wolf set an honest pace with Peters (HHH)
and Rob McHarg in close attendance.
Peters levered open a 5 metre gap on the last bend but then Rob,
always a fighter, came back to all but steal it on the line.
Strong running also came from Kevin Quinn in the 800m but again
Peters prevailed. Teams:

2, Hastings, 2 June 2001 A
team manager’s worst nightmare came true early in the day when Bob
Bridges turned up at the Wandsworth Depot to collect the minibus –
only to find that it had not been returned by the previous user.
A gang of athletes now had to face an unplanned rail journey to
Hastings and the possibility of missing half the meeting.
Down on the South Coast the hammer kicked off with just Mike
Small as our representative.
John Osazuwa should have been the senior partner of our hammer
duo but with no possibility of his arrival in time for the event he had
given up and gone home; a possible 10 points shrank to an actual 4.
From that point on it was a struggle to get back on terms with
the other clubs.
As the track events got under way our team arrived and although
some were a little short of warm-up time, at least they made it. Jon
Squirrel, now coached by Judy Vernon, notched up some good hurdles
points but it was on the field that we had our only double wins with
Ezra Clarke and James Hilston in the triple jump and Faroe Islander Heri
Ziska and veteran Mike Small in the discus.
Amazingly, at the end of the day, in spite of having only one
competitor in six events and none at all in the long jump – we ended
up 2nd.
But it was very tight and it could so easily have been last
place. The
5k saw Knut Hegvold and Will Cockerell set off with a mission to
alternate the lead every two laps and help each other to reasonable
times.
Knut immediately went to the front and two laps later Will duly
moved ahead for his turn.
Only two Highgate runners took up the challenge but
unfortunately, when it came to the start of lap 6, Knut was some 4
seconds back and unable to play any further part in the pacing. Will
towed the Highgate man for a further six laps whereupon the north
Londoner let loose for a runaway win. Will was now losing ground and
soon found himself facing a successful attack from the second Highgate
man – and Knut, who had the audacity to pip Will in the home stretch.
An entertaining race! Teams:
1 Highgate H 112.5; 2 Belgrave H 106; 3 Hastings AC 104; 4 Croydon H

1, Battersea Park, 5 May 2001 With
only five Belgravians in action on the track it was left to the jumpers
and throwers to keep the team afloat. Clifton Green, grandson of the
late “Jimmy”
Green, founder of Athletics Weekly and a former member of Belgrave,
boosted the throws with a fine 61.62 javelin throw whilst James Hilston
– no training but a winter of rugby playing behind him – took the
high jump with 1.95.
Outstanding in the middle-distance running events was Al Stewart
whose first 5000m of the season
gave him a chance to lap the entire field to win in a personal
record; he followed up with a another maximum score in the 1500m where a
late burst into the finishing straight took him from 4th to 1st. Teams:
