National Junior Athletics League, Brent Division - 2004

Southern Premier Division Qualifying match, Copthall Stadium, 29 August 2004

Men qualify in style but women must try again in 2005

Both the men's and women's teams were hit by absentees and clashing fixtures - but whereas the men's team was more than strong enough to overcome this problem, the women's team was not.  This means that next year our resources will be split.  While the men compete in the Southern Premier Division, the women will continue in the Brent Division at a different venue on the same day - so we will have two lots of coach travel and have to supply two teams of officials.

It was a super achievement for the men, returning to Premier competition after a gap of a couple of years, but let's face it, they are so strong at the moment that they would surely win the national final - if they were eligible. All credit too to the women's team.  There were only seven of them and yet half way through the meeting they were in second position in the match.

Captain Chris Gearing led from the front and collected the man of the match award for his performance in the shot.  A huge impact was made in the match by international multi-eventers Kevin Sempers and Mark Allen, seemingly winning events at will. In particular, what a superb effort from Mark in the shot.

Short of middle-distance runners, 400m man Gavin Selway and one lap hurdler Ryan Dinham volunteered for the 800 metres and both showed that they could make names for themselves here if they could be lured away from one lap events. Gavin showed no fear as he took up the running on the second lap, forcing the pace along until he started to tread water in the home straight.  For Ryan, who studied his watch after the first lap as if trying to work out how long he'd got before his next event, it was considerably easier.  He led the chasing pack, having allowed the leader to get away, but then turned on a long sprint on the second circuit which saw him canter home for a win some 30 seconds faster than his pb (set years ago).  Both these guys could immediately go to very low 1:50s if they felt so inclined.

Sprint internationals Wade Bennett-Jackson and James Ellington were well in control of the sprints, taking things fairly leisurely - and we must say a word about Jamie Macrae and Paul Cowling who all summer have always been on hand to tackle whatever event is short of a man in a claret and gold vest.

Wins were rarer for the women.  Michelle Nestor was in good form, being not too far away from her U20 triple jump record and winning the long jump as well. Fran Gregory was busy, winning in the B 100m, and tackling the 200m, 400m and both relays. As usual Toks Hassan scored well in the sprints and in the longer distances Imogen Ainsworth and Louise Collier both did well, encountering some stiffer competition than they have been used to in the Brent Division. Apart from Michelle, all these girls will still be eligible for U20 competition in 2005 and are sure to provide a powerful nucleus for next year's team.

Match 4, Perivale, 25 July 2004

It's a double league win

Martin Marshall leads the 1500 metres.

Belgrave's Junior men and women now head for the end of season Southern Premier Division qualifying match as Brent Division Champions.  In the men's match Milton Keynes pulled out all the stops and led throughout much of the afternoon but in the end were unable to match a Belgrave outfit that included more than half a dozen internationals.  The smaller women's team didn't have any international stars in action but were even more dominant in their match where they led the competition from beginning to end.

Wade Bennett-Jackson caused some gasps from the timekeepers when he swept to victory in the A 200m in 21.5 - but when James Ellington followed up with 21.4 in the B race they looked at their watches in disbelief!  Mark Allen set a personal best in the discus, pushing Chris Gearing into an unaccustomed B slot, and together with fellow multi-eventer Kevin Sempers, this pair did huge damage in the field events.  New man Martin Marshall made a welcome debut for the Bels in the 1500m where he won comfortably - and then finished strongly in the steeplechase to gain more good points.

Once again Imogen Ainsworth was a double winner and has now gone right through the NJAL League this year with wins over 1500m and 3000m in each match; surely that must be a record of some sort. Louise Collier toyed with the opposition in the 800m before cutting loose over the final 200 metres for a clear win - and Toks Hassan and Sharena McGregor both set season's bests in the 200m.  She probably hates them, currently only tackling 400m runs in the relay, but Toks looks the perfect one lap racer and one feels sure that we'll see her running low 50s one day. Michelle Nestor did her normal high scoring in the jumps, including a 5.37m effort for her best ever long jump.

Match 3, Palmer Park, Reading, 20 June 2004

Men and women heading for promotion

Our small teams - 8 women and 10 men - travelled to Reading with no great expectations. Both men and women had won in the previous round but for this match the men's team, in particular, had been hit by exams and the fact that four of our top points scorers were on international duty in Mannheim, Germany. Imagine, then, the delight with which the women's results were received at the end of the afternoon, with Belgrave in first place. And ten minutes later, when the men's team scores were announced it was cause for double celebrations when our lads were declared winners by a single point! (No doubt the results will be scrutinised carefully.)

With one more match to go both teams now look destined for promotion to the Southern Premier Division and a crack at the National Championship in 2005. The men have been there before, of course, but this is the first ever year that our women's team have contested the National Junior Athletics League - and when one sees the enthusiasm and effort they put into their competition one has to say, "why didn't we do this before?".

Again Toks Hassan did some heavy points scoring in the sprints and she was well backed up by Fran Gregory and Sharena McGregor. Where did that 27.5 in the 200m come from Sharena!  Michelle Nestor looks every inch a class triple jumper; she won the long jump too and showed up well in the high jump and shot. Louise Collier front ran an exciting 800, where the Reading girl stuck to her like glue for 750m, and also impressed in the 400m and long relay.

Meanwhile, in the middle distances, Imogen Ainsworth might have been racing without a Belgrave B string as a companion but she looked majestic as she completely dominated the 3000 metres and turned out again to pull off a win in the 1500 metres as well. She has done this now in each of the three matches - what a talent.

For the women a terrific afternoon was rounded off by Toks Hassan's attempt to catch the leaders in the last lap of the 4x400 metres relay.  Maybe 50m down at the takeover, she stormed the first 150m, cruised ever closer down the back straight and then turned it on again for the final bend.  The task was just too much but she clocked an outstanding 58.5 for her split.

As with the women's team, much doubling and trebling up of events enabled the majority of events to be covered by the men.  Kevin Sempers and Mark Allen, fresh from their exploits at the AAA U20 Decathlon Champs at Stoke the previous weekend, gave us eight key wins. Aaron Abiri won both horizontal jumps while 200m/400m men Jason Hussain, Gavin Selway and Set Osho were dominant in their events and contributed greatly to our two relay wins.  But when the winning margin is only a single point, one can look at the results and see how every single effort was important:  Jonathan Regis - pulling up in the A 100 metres with a knee problem and then running through in last place to get his points; Jamie Macrae - filling in as many places as he could to cover the middle distances; Roy Collier - adding the 800 metres to his normal jumps and throws.

Let's not forget the officials either.  Their presence earned 35 points - enough to sway both matches our way. And the spectators too, in particular Mr and Mrs. Dinham who came along to add their support even though their son Ryan was in action in Germany.

Well done Team Managers. What a great couple of teams you run.

Match 2, Battersea Park, 23 May2004

Belgrave Juniors notch up an impressive double win

Toks Hassan clocked an English Schools qualifier in the 200m to gain Woman of the match award.  Ryan Dinham missed World Junior qualifier in 400 hurdles by 5/100ths but set a league record.  Another league record came from Chris Gearing in the shot.  The men's team set the highest ever match score.

Match 1, Carshalton Arena, Sutton, 25 April 2004

The Junior team, comprising men and women this year, made a good start to the season. Milton Keynes AC won the Men's competition by a mere nine points after a tense half-hour in the scorers’ office at the end of the afternoon. The women’s match was initially reported as being won by Thames Valley Harriers but later results showed that Belgrave had in fact beaten the Valley by four points.

Mark Allen made a huge contribution to the club’s total with his five event wins. He and club mate Kevin Sempers, who won the high jump A and pole vault B, are new members of the team and both are part of the GB men's decathlon squad. Chris Gearing was joint Athlete of the Match for his 18.14 metres in the shot, and he also hurled the discus to beyond 46 metres in his second event. Roy Collier found an extra 5 metres over his distances last year to win the javelin B competition with over 40 metres. On the track, Jason Hussain and Gavin Selway were outstanding winners in the 400 metres with 49.3 and 49.9 seconds respectively. Set Osho, who had a brilliant 2003 season, clocked 22.5 in the 200m A with Jason Hussain winning the B in 22.1 seconds.  Fast finishing Jamie MacRae was second in the 800m in 2:08.8.

Ryan Dinham won the 400m hurdles after hitting the eighth hurdle hard as a result of experimenting with a new stride pattern; he was also second in the sprint hurdles with 15.2 seconds and ran a fine leg (48.1) in the 4x400m where the team clocked 3:25.5. They believe they have a realistic chance of a national junior record this year.

For the women, Imogen Ainsworth was double winner in the 1500m/3000m with 5:16.2 and 11:47.1 respectively. 200m winner Toks Hassan (26.2) also placed second in the 100m with 13.0. Michelle Nestor gained a triple jump personal best (11.22 metres) where she placed second, and went one better in both the high jump (1.60) and the long jump (5.09). The javelin proved to the best throwing event for the team; Amy Forsyth who clocked 61.6 seconds for the 400m showed she has speed in her arms as well as her legs with her 30 metres throw for second; Charlotte Hopkins won the B with 18.55 metres.
