Belles winning streak ends but what a way to do it!

Final, Bedford, 21 July 2001.

The Jubilee Cup Final saw a tremendous result for the Belgrave Women's team as they beat established British League clubs, Windsor SE&H and Shaftesbury to place 3rd  to Sale H Manchester and Birchfield.  The team were awarded the Dick Dunster Trophy for the most improved team.  As far as we know, the Belles have only once progressed to the second round - never mind the final.  Shelley Drew became Belgrave's first ever female Cup final winner as she beat the Cup record in the discus.  Sylvia Cruz then took the javelin with a Portuguese National and club record. Maiteland Marks obliterated her own best ever 400 hurdles mark - also a  club record - and the relay teams were out of this world with 46.57 and 3:43.92 (the latter took 10 seconds off our best ever performance).

Note that the match result was incorrectly scored on the day when it was announced that we had placed 2nd.

Shock win takes Belles to the Cup Final

Semi-Final, Wood Green, 10 June 2001.

Teams: 1 Belgrave H 117; 2 Birchfield H 114.5; 3 Epsom & Ewell H 81.5; 4  Walton AC 78.5; 5 Woodford Green & Essex Ladies 76; 6 Team Solent 66; 7 Aldershot Farnham & District AC 63.5; 8 Bournemouth AC 47.

The weather was cold and wet but spirits were oh! so high as the Belgrave women’s team made history in qualifying for the Jubilee Cup final for the first time in the Club’s history.  Not only did they qualify – they turned on a shock win to beat Birchfield Harriers and Epsom Ewell H.

A total of six first places paved the way for this team victory. Hannah Stares stormed ahead in the 400m hurdles to clock her best time of 60.5 with Rachel King performing equally strongly in the sprint hurdles.  A tactical race gave Maria Sharpe victory in the 1500m – a terrific run as she had been in action the previous evening in the BMC Grand Prix at Watford.

Wins on the field came from Sylvia Cruz in the javelin, 43.99, Maureen Knight in the high jump, 1.65, and Shelley Drew who spun the discus out to 57.10m.  For Maureen the high jump was just one of three events that she undertook in spite of suffering from a heavy cold.

Personal best performances came from Shelley Drew, who moved up to an impressive 12.17m in the shot, and Syreeta Stracey, who has been running so well over 400m and 1500m this summer but this time improved her 3000m best.  Another to impress was young Amala Onuoro; her run in the 100m came the day after she won the Sussex Schools Intermediate title in a record 12.2.

The only disappointment was Lucy Webber's decision not to vault. Having initially elected to enter at 3.40m, the weather conditions and lack of strong pole meant that Lucy decided not to risk injury and she pulled out.  Fortunately, this didn't impact our final position.

Two Club Records bit the dust – and both of them relays.  The previous 4 x 100m best had stood for no less than 14 years – but what’s the betting that this new mark doesn’t last much more than 14 days!

All in all it was a terrific team performance and we look forward to finals day with real anticipation – a men’s and women’s team competing together at Bedford on July 21st.

Jubilee Cup - Belles storm into the "semis"

Round One, Battersea Park,  20 May 2001

Teams: 1, Belgrave H 133.5; 2 Walton AC 118; 3, Basingstoke 110.5; 4 Thurrock 110; 5 Basildon 41.

More startling performances came from the women’s team at Battersea in the first round of the Jubilee Cup and the semi-final stage at Haringey on June 10th promises to be one of the most exciting women’s competitions in which we’ve been involved.

From the opening event, Esther Eharuyi’s 400m hurdles race, the Belles took the lead and then spent the rest of the afternoon steadily widening the gap.

A devastating win came from Emma Davies in the 800 metres.  Blasting away from the gun, she was immediately out on her own – and no wonder as she took the “bell” in 62.1 seconds.  Needless to say her final time of 2:08.0 was our best ever and, subject to investigation, the fastest ever seen at Battersea.

Fifteen year-old Amala Onuora had the measure of everyone else in the 100 metres while Esther Eharuyi came back for another win in the sprint hurdles.  Another youngster, Michelle Nestor, had the misfortune to injure herself in the final round of the long jump and had to forgo her speciality, the triple jump, as a result.

The throwing events were terrific with Diane Holden again over 53 metres and Shelley Drew and Sylvia Cruz in discus and javelin extending the stadium records – never mind club records.

Even the 4x400 metres relay time was our best ever.

100m: 1 A.Onuora (U17) 12.4. 200m: 2 J.Culley 24.7. 400m: 1 J.Culley 55.9. 800m: 1 E.Davies 2:08.0. 1500m: 3 S.Stracey 5:08.4. 3000m: 3 D.Hearne (U20) 12:29.4. 100mH: 1 E.Eharuyi 16.0. 400mH: 1 E.Eharuyi 60.9.
