Division Three Champions!

Match 6, Cambridge, 01 September 2001.

What a result! And what a season! In fine style the Belles achieved their season’s aim, not only of promotion to Division 2, but going up as League Champions.

A big thank you and congratulations to all the athletes, the officials, and supporters for making this possible. It’s been a long, hard slog, but we finally got there. Well done to Kim and Paul Collier for rounding up as many juniors as were available given the holiday season.

Even an operation the day before couldn’t keep Team Manager Cynthia James away from this momentous match. The girls showed their appreciation of all her hard work this season with champagne and chocolates.

We knew we would have a battle on our hands to win the league, so we were fortunate to be able to field such a strong team for this final match. All of our seniors placed in the top 3, with an amazing 25 first places. Personal bests still featured: Danielle Kandaros 400m 64.1; Catherine Eastham 3000m 12.17.7; Maureen Knight 100H 15.8; Michelle Nestor LJ 5.02.

If we’re going to succeed in Division Two next year, we’re going to need to discover some new junior talent, as again we suffered from a lack of athletes. The team of 5: Sharena McGregor, Shereena Miller, Louise Collier, Catherine Olawore and Emily Collins, again put in maximum effort to cover as many events as allowable. Both Sharon’s won their 100m, with a PB for Shereena Miller of 13.2. Other personal bests were for: Emily Collins 800m 2.53.8; Catherine Olawore SP 7.17 and JT 9.17 in her first attempt.

Well done Belles, and we look forward to seeing what next year brings…….

Weakened team pipped by Swindon

Match 5, Swindon, 11 Aug 2001.

Well, it just goes to show how far we’ve come this season when we’re disappointed with 2nd place in a league match. Still, with a very small team of seniors and juniors multi-eventing, we actually performed incredibly well.

Illness, injury, holidays, car break-downs and the Under 17 AAA’s all put paid to the size of the team. Nevertheless, as always, the girls pulled together and other than the U17 races, and a number of junior races, all events were covered.

The track wasn’t in great condition, due to vandalism. As a result, the pole vault didn’t take place. The triple jump, hurdles and hammer/ discus were also effected by the state of the facilities. Even sections of the track kerbing had been ripped up.

We had only four under 15s: Shereena Miller, Amy Doyley, Catherine Olawore and Emily Collins who pulled out all the stops in their maximum 3 events. A PB for Shereena Miller in the 100 metres of 13.7 was followed by a marvellous fight to the finish in the 4x100 relay where the girls snatched first place in a tough battle.

The seniors too saw a number of PB’s. Jennifer Culley is showing a talent for the 400 hurdles as well as the flat and achieved a PB of 61.8, streets ahead of the other athletes in her race. Danielle Kandaros also set a PB of 71.8 in the 400 hurdles. Vicki Goodwin moving down to the 400m as well as the 800m earned a 60.7 first place.

In the hammer we had two PBs from Paula Cruz (20.27) and Danielle Kandaros (17.55), and in the 3000m Catherine Eastham knocked another 20 secs off to get down to 12.28.5.

If we’re to win the league we need to pull out all of the stops and field a strong team for the final match as our points lead is getting ever more narrow.

Unbeaten with just two matches to go

Match 4, Battersea Park, 14 July 2001

After a somewhat rainy start the skies cleared and the afternoon stayed dry.  It was a day of many celebrations, some more hard fought than others.  In addition to our celebrating 25 years of the Belgrave women’s team, Derek Jones and Rex Bale were also celebrating their silver anniversary with the club. That, coupled with a few birthdays, and another Belles win, led to a few glasses of wine and a giant cake being consumed at the end of the match.

We had the privilege of electronic timing for most of the day, although not without a few hitches. Sadly no club or stadium records were recorded.

Despite missing a few athletes due to the the AAA’s, the Belles managed to pull together and fight hard to maintain their unbroken record so far this season. There were even had a few personal bests.

In the juniors, Natasha Richardson clocked a pb of 13.8 in the 100m and 4.28m in the long jump, and in the seniors, Vicki Goodwin scored a pb in the 400m of 61.23.  If I missed any other pb’s then very sorry, but some of you may have noticed I was rather distracted myself, competing in the pole vault and also managing a pb in the 3000m with 12.47.7.

We’re going to be very short of junior athletes for the next meeting at Swindon on the 11th August, so any girls not competing in the U17/U15 AAA’s that weekend please let Cynthia or Kim know if you can compete in the league match instead.

Still Tops

Match 3, Norman Park, Bromley, 23 June 2001.

Teams: 1 Belgrave H 200; 2 Blackheath H 193; 3 Windsor SE&H 168; 4 Kingston & Poly H 133; 5 Verlea AC 126.

Well, the heat was definitely on for the Belles in the third match – both in terms of the fabulous sunny weather at Norman Park, and the fact that we were up against two of the toughest clubs in the league. Having led comfortably from the start, there were a few moments when we thought we might not maintain our unblemished record of the season, at one point even dropping to second behind Blackheath who had pulled together a strong home fixture team. However, with a few nail-biting events remaining and a long and drawn out tallying up process, we were relieved to see that we had maintained our unbeaten position and are still top of the league.

The points in this match were vital though as the next fixture will see us suffering from many athletes competing at the AAA’s instead. Still, team spirit and performance is so good at present that we hopefully won’t suffer next time round.

The juniors pulled out a full team, only missing one event through injury. Sadly though, other than Louise Colliers 1st place in the 800m and some strong track performances all round, the juniors did suffer in the field events.  A couple of PB’s noted for the day were U13 Kirsty Burn’s 5.55.7 1500m and Louise Collier’s 28.1 200m.

The seniors were very strong yet again and even had a number of non-scorers competing – quite a rarity for the Belles. Team Manager Cynthia James is doing an excellent job covering all the events and ensuring that the old regulars are not overlooked with all the new additions.

Maria Sharp had comfortable wins in the 800m (2.15.9) and 3000m (10.11.5) despite suffering from a stomach complaint and a personal best of 13.38.1 went to Jackie Emery, also in the 3000m. Jackie has given us some consistent running and excellent support this season.  Maureen Knight also achieved a PB with an 11.72 non-scoring shot putt.

Lucy Webber didn’t get the chance to stretch herself in the pole vault as part of the bar broke during the competition. Luckily, Lucy had already jumped and won the competition with a 3.40 clearance and was satisfied with her max 5 points score.  Diane Holden had us on tenterhooks with her last minute arrival at the track but it was worth the wait as she threw a club record of 56.21 in the hammer. Another club record went to Maiteland Marks, breaking her own record with a 58.6 400H.

Belles league lead grows

Match 2, Handy Cross, Wycombe, 19 May 2001.

Teams: 1 Belgrave 224; 2 Radley 173; 3 Salisbury 166; 4 Wycombe 143; 5 Medway 90.

There was plenty to catch the eye in match 2 where the Belles continued their quest for competition at a higher level. Two enormous senior club records set the tone but outstanding without setting a record was Captain Jennifer Culley, supposedly resting as much as possible for the following day’s Cup match but clocking up three wins (including her 55.0 effort in the long relay) against very strong opposition.

The records came from two debutantes.  Diane Holden had the hammer judges covering a lot more ground than normal when she entered the circle to unleash throws in the 50 metre range.  Her best of 53.98 added over 22 metres to our previous best. Meanwhile, on the track Kimberly Carson set the home stretch alight with a superb run in the sprint hurdles to remove eight whole tenths from a record that had stood for over twenty years.  They both look like improving those marks in the near future.

Strong running came from Vicky Goodwin and Syreeta Stracey in the middle distance.  Syreeta’s 400m and 1500m were both personal bests. Veteran Vilma Thompson and Vicki Hassell scored heavily in the throws while all-rounder Lisa Antill became another on our growing list of triple-jumpers; her 11.12 was an under 20 club record

Double wins came from under 15s Shereena McGregor and Louise Collier.  In the 800m Louise took off like a gazelle and passed the bell in a startling 66 seconds by which time she was about 80m clear.  A slightly slower first lap might have seen her get close to cracking 2:20.  Hurdler Amy Forsyth was another to win by a mile and our under 17 300m hurdles best of 45.63 looks set for a revision before long.

Keep watching this space !

Match 1, Battersea Park 28 April 2001.

Teams: 1 Belgrave 225.5; 2 Aldershot F&D 168; 3 South London H 136; 4 Croydon H 132; 5 St. Albans 108.5.

For the first time in a long time the Belles topped the league having amassed their highest points total ever (so far!)  in a league match.

In terms of performance of the day, it’s difficult to decide where to begin. Shelley Drew’s new club record of 54.70 in the discus also happened to be a new stadium record (beating Judy Oakes’ 49.92). In addition, 5 more club records were broken on the day.

Michelle Nestor, showing even more promise this season, broke her own U17 triple jump record with 10.66 (an improvement of 22cms).

The seniors too had a good day, with Esther Erharuyi setting a new club best of 60.6 in the 400m hurdles, beating the 1990 previous of 65.7. Jennifer Culley equalled her own 400m club record of 55.2 and Sylvia Cruz added 4m to the Javelin club record with a throw of 47.16. Attempts at a new Portuguese record though were not met.

Club records aside there were many other outstanding performances from juniors and seniors and newcomers and ‘old-timers’. There were a total of 26 first places, 17 seconds, 6 thirds, 5 fourths and no lasts!  Sadly though, such  a wealth of talent means that there’s not enough room to comment on all of the fabulous results individually.

With such an excellent start, a great deal more promised, and the continuing great atmosphere and team spirit of the Belles, this season is looking exceedingly promising. Sir Eddie was entranced enough, despite the appalling weather, to stay and support the team for the whole day.
