Promotion Again - Division One in 2003 Match 6, Southampton, 7 September 2002. 1 Thurrock H 179; 2 Southampton 172; 3 Belgrave H 166; 4 Colchester AC 163; 5 Shaftesbury Barnet H 158. Could it have been any more nerve-racking? With the Belles starting the last match in 4th place in the league, and needing every single point to ensure promotion, the team was missing a number of key athletes. In fact, the team was missing a lot of key athletes; either through injury, illness, tiredness, or simply attending a wedding (ok, so it was Diane Allahgreen’s!) It was yet another of those all too familiar scenarios from days gone by, whereby the team had to pull together to ensure that all events were covered. This meant we had Lucy Webber winning the pole vault, then going on to do the javelin and 4x400m relay. Our other pole vaulter, Jenny Searle, also showed her diversity by winning the 100m hurdles. Other wins came from Amala Onoura, with a sprints double, Jennifer Culley in the 400m, and the 4x100m relay team. Michelle Nestor won the triple jump but also achieved personal bests in the long jump and high jump! So desperate for points were we that Julie Mitchell barely had a chance for a warm-up as, having been held up in traffic, she arrived only just before the start of the 800m. Still, she managed to achieve 2nd place in the race, and after a proper warm-up, gained 1st in the 1500m. Among the juniors, Toks Anne Hassan was on form, winning the 200m, but otherwise the overstretched team struggled. Many of these youngsters will be moving up into U17’s next year, so we need to attract some more junior talent quickly for next season. Our usual high points score was significantly down, with the final score seeing the Belles placed only 3rd in the match. It was a long wait until the following day when we learned that we’d managed to scrape through into Division One. Only just though, dropping down to 5th place. Big thanks go to everyone who competed throughout the season and particularly in this last match. Let’s hope next year isn’t as stressful, and the Belles’ promotion streak continues. Match 5, Worthing, 27 July 2002. 1 Belgrave 217.5; 2 Ealing S&M AC 199; 3 Worthing AC 173.5; 4 City of Plymouth 117.5; 5 Huntindon AC 105.5. With the Belles sitting in 4th place in Division 2, and the top five clubs moving up for promotion, the mood in the camp was one of nervous excitement. With only two matches remaining could the Belles maintain this position? It would take a large points score to keep us in contention, particularly because of the closeness of the 4th to 8th clubs. We were also up against Ealing, who in 5th place provided the toughest competition. Diane Holden set the agenda on the day with a ground record in the hammer (55.30m) - this despite only arriving 5 minutes before the event started! Christine Harrison-Bloomfield and Amala Onoura proved a great double in the sprints, gaining double firsts in the 100m (11.9 and 12.5 respectively) and 200m (24.5 and 25.7 respectively). Other double firsts came from Julie Mitchell and Syreeta Stracey in the 1500m (4.35.8 and 5.15.8 respectively), with Julie also getting a clear win in the 800m (2.15.7) which she used as her warm-up! Triple-jumpers Caroline Stead (11.98m) and Michelle Nestor (10.25m) continued the double first tradition, with Michelle again and again proving herself at this event. A great 4x100m relay (48.4) with Amala, Amy Forsyth, Jennifer Culley and Christine Harrison-Bloomfield summed up the level of talent our women's team now possesses. Sadly there was too much work for Christine to do on the last leg of the 4x400m (4.10.0), although her fabulous 55.7 last leg had the crowd thinking a win could be possible. Coming second wasn't too bad, and the Worthing team which won did break the ground record in doing so. In the Juniors competition, Toks Hassan is turning out to be a talented sprinter who is a pleasure to watch. She won her 100m in 13.0 and the 200m in 26.8, whilst also winning the high jump with 1.45m and being part of the second placing 4x100m team. Other Junior wins came from Louise Collier in the 800m (2.21.4) and 200m (27.8), Catherine Olawore in the 1500m (5.35) and Shana Kemp in the javelin with 10.82m. What a terrific day it was for Team Manager Cynthia James, not only with the great result, but also two wins in the raffle. Can it get any better? Senior Women Under 17 Women Under 15 Girls Match 2, Norman Park, Bromley, 18 May 2002. 1 Hertford Phoenix 207; 2 Belgrave H 182; 3 Bromley AC 157; 4 Hastings AC 138, 5 North Devon 126. Faced with a severely depleted team because of the clash with the international at Loughborough, team manager Cynthia James amazingly managed to field a complete team in all but one event. Unfortunately for her, that meant she also had to compete (in three field events!). Likewise, many of the rest of the team showed themselves to be real troopers by filling in in events that weren't their usual. Nonetheless, a spirited team effort from the seniors and juniors led to Belgrave achieving 2nd place on the day although, to be fair, some of the competition appeared to be suffering even more from a significant lack of athletes. Amala Onuora continued to show her excellent form, dominating her races and pulling off a flying finish to help the team win the 4x100m relay. Other strong performances came from Maria Sharp in the 800m and 3000m, and Maureen Knight's multi-events on the field. The juniors faced some stiff competition but managed to hold their own. The performance of the day, however, had to go to Louise Collier with her club record smashing 1500m. Not only did Louise knock 11 seconds off Jackie Stone's 17 year old U15 record, but she also knocked 0.6 seconds off Jenny Webb's U17 record. Well done Louise! Senior Women Under 17 Women Under 15 Girls Match 1, Eton, 27 April 2002. The Belles were streets ahead in most of the senior events but we missed the middle distance aces who were competing so successfully at Sutton Coldfield in the AAA 6 Stage Road Relay. We were also not as strong as we'd have liked in the youngest age group - and overall had to be satisfied with 3rd team place. AAA Indoor Champion Amy Spencer turned out in her first Southern League match, winning by about 10 metres, and Sarah Claxton and Julie and Anne Holman also made their debuts with great success. As usual Jennifer Culley, Maureen Knight and Amala Onuora piled on the points and Hannah Stares and Shelley Newman continued where they left off last season - winning their events in fine style. A club record came from Amy Forsythe in the under 17 300m hurdles and Diane Holden added over a metre to her hammer record. Under 15 Louise Collier's 2:19.6 800m was also a club best and improves our under 17 and under 20 age records as well. Senior Women Under 17 Women Under 15 Girls |
