Stockholm sees Goldie near top form

Javelin. First throw of the competition and defending champion Christina Obergföll of Germany speared the turf at 66.22 metres - a world leading mark for 2011. Excitement over? Far from it. Goldie Sayers was next up and our Olympic fourth placer hit one of her best throws ever - 64.31m. Neither of these two improved in the next couple of rounds but last throw winner at the Olympic Games Barbora Spotáková of the Czech Republic crept closer with 61.98m and the Russian Mariya Abakumova moved into third with 64.21m. Just one throw left each then and Spotáková launched a mighty 64.40m to push Goldie back into third - only for the Belgrave woman to respond with 64.46m to regain her second spot. A great competition from our National record holder.

Shot Putt. Greg Beard was unable to reproduce his best throws of the year and had to be content with 12th place. He must have been mighty pleased to pull on a British vest though after years out of the sport.

High Jump. With a clear high jump card up to and including 2.20m hopes were high that Samson Oni would at least equal his season's best of 2.24m but on this occasion it was beyond him and he had to settle for 8th.

100 metres. In spite of a whole series of runs just a hundredth or so over 10 seconds, Dwain Chambers could not be regarded as favourite - that mantle had been draped on the shoulders of Frenchman Christophe Lemaitre who had recently set a National record of 9.96. Chambers had a good start and might have been centimetres in front early on, but Lemaitre came through powerfully and it was another French record - 9.95 - while Dwain held onto second in 10.07 a metre and a half ahead of Portugal's Francis Obikwelu.

Men. 100m: 2 (2r2) D Chambers 10.07/1.0. HJ: 8 S Oni 2.20. SP: 12 G Beard 16.97.

Women. JT: 2 G Sayers 64.46.
