Thursday 25 April

First run over! Unfortunately it wasn't the result I was hoping for with training going the way it is, but I learnt a lot from the experience. The meet wasn't particularly well organised and me and my training partner had to end our warm ups prematurely to make our race! Never happened before but I now know how I'll deal with that situation in the future. So the 100 turned out to be a very rushed and panicky run where neither of us executed the skills we've been learning this winter. The time in the end was 10.53 which, upon reflection, was an ok opener. The 200 was another learnt lesson, don't try and sprint the whole thing flat out! I came off the bend well in the lead then, inevitably, died.

Next run is this Saturday which will just be a 100. Goals for this one are simply to execute the race well. I had my last track session today (Thursday) before it and have posted some promising times. So I'll be hoping for a faster run and just keep chopping my time down as I move into the season and approach the trials.

Next update will be the second race!

Photos are of me and some of the others at the track on a bit of a gloomy day and the morning view from our apartment!

This week has been a fairly standard week of training. Lots of hard work and some very unpredictable weather. The track we're based at is quite a hard mondo surface so we've had to look for alternative places to train as everyone's bodies are beginning to hurt! The week coming will be the last block of training for this phase as we approach race season.

I'll be opening my season this Saturday the 20th in the 100m and 200m at the Tom Jones Memorial meet in Gainesville, Florida. It'll be an assessment of where I'm at with training at the moment as we're being peaked for July (trials time). I had a slight pull in my hamstring last week but it seems to have been dealt with and I'm really excited to see what ill run on the weekend. As we're still in quite heavy volume training wise, it takes the pressure and expectation off the first meet and I can just look forward to competing and racing. Everyone in the group is training well and most will be opening their own season this weekend too.

Stay tuned for season opener updates!

Hello Belgravians!

For those who don't know me, I'm Greg Cackett and I run the 100m and 200m. I'm coached by Linford Christie and for the next four weeks I'm living the hard life in Daytona Beach, Florida. I'm training hard for what I hope will be a successful summer season. This is my first experience of warm weather training so Bill, Alan and I thought it might be interesting to do a few little posts to describe my experiences on this trip; hopefully you'll agree!

I've just finished my first week out here and, while the jet lag took some getting over, the main thing I've had to get used to is the sun on my poor pale skin! Sunburn aside though, running in the heat makes such a difference. You feel you can run fast without the worry of cold muscles cramping or pulling. I've been lucky enough as well to have received sound advice from Mr Laws on the dangers of getting too carried away in the heat. With that in mind I've been working myself hard but doing my best to stay healthy at the same time. Treatment from my training partner and masseur Richard Strachan, plus extra stretching is keeping the niggles at bay. We had a little trip to Orlando too, trained at the Disney track and I managed to pick up some new Puma gear so, for a couple of days at least, I'm not the team scruff-ball!

All in all it's been hard work but a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to what the next few weeks are going to bring and describing to you all an experience I feel lucky to be a part of. A short while ago I was playing Saturday league football with my mates and now I'm on a warm weather training camp with Linford Christie and a squad of international athletes. It's been a mad couple of years.

Thanks for reading and all the best for your summer seasons.
