Independent Sports Review

Largest Ever Sports Consultation Launched

Former Ministers for Sport, Lord Colin Moynihan and Kate Hoey MP, have launched a comprehensive public consultation on sport and recreation. Views are being sought from everyone involved in sport in the United Kingdom, from individuals and amateur associations to professional bodies and competitors. This unique web-based discussion is part of the Independent Sports Review which was launched this summer.

The online initiative will directly help to inform the outcome of the Independent Sports Review and all those involved in sport are encouraged to express their views at www.independentsportsreview.co.uk. The review will cover all aspects of sport from the playground to the Olympics.

Gathering public opinion is a vital stage in the review process, simply because sport in this country depends upon the dedication of thousands of coaches, helpers, parents and volunteers. If a sports strategy for the twenty first century is to be effective then priority should be accorded to all those who play and organise sport. The website has tailored questionnaires for teachers, coaches, participants, volunteers, sports clubs and high performance athletes.

The last independent review of sport, The Wolfenden Report, took place in 1960 and identified many key areas including the importance of sustaining participation in sport by young people. This review will examine whether the current structures for sport remain fit for purpose as well as making any recommendations for improvements.

Participation in sport remains vitally important to our society due to the increasing levels of obesity and inactivity. A national sports policy should be responsive to people’s needs. A sports loving country should have in place a system that serves everyone in sport from the elite athletes to the recreational players to youngsters just learning their sport. Such a system should ensure that the UK is a healthy, active and successful sporting nation. Your views will help to make this a reality.
