Men's Southern League 2001: Match 1, Battersea Park
With only five Belgravians in action on the track it was left to the jumpers and throwers to keep the team afloat. Clifton Green, grandson of the late “Jimmy” Green, founder of Athletics Weekly and a former member of Belgrave, boosted the throws with a fine 61.62 javelin throw whilst James Hilston – no training but a winter of rugby playing behind him – took the high jump with 1.95. Outstanding in the middle-distance running events was Al Stewart whose first 5000m of the season gave him a chance to lap the entire field to win in a personal record; he followed up with a another maximum score in the 1500m where a late burst into the finishing straight took him from 4th to 1st.
