15

Reebok Cross Challenge, Edinburgh. The U17 men's race was the 8th and last of the day, so by then the course was particularly badly cut-up. Jonathan and Darren both started well and by the end of the first lap were in around 6th and 4th places respectively, but the leading six were all quite closely grouped. This really set the pattern for the remainder of the race. Darren moved up to 3rd by the end of lap two and 2nd by lap three and just managed to hold on to this position at the finish. Jonathan improved by a place by two-thirds distance and in a flat-out sprint to the finish, just held off the runner closing behind him. Unfortunately, William was never in the top 10 from early on and then fell, which placed him further down the field.

The overall positions in this competition make good reading. Darren Mallin is lying 3rd and Jonathan Blackledge is in joint 5th position, just 5 points behind the leader. With the final at Nottingham counting for double points, this is only 3 places, so it is very close. With William Docherty lying in 9th place, the club are clearly the best placed in the U17 men’s age group.

U17 Men 4 kms. 1 S.Pickering (Bridlington) 15:18; 2 D.Mallin 15:20; 5 J.Blackledge 15:26; 22 R.MacIntosh 16:11; 28 W.Docherty 16:21.

SEAA Inter-Countues, Nowton Park, Bury St. Edmunds. U17 4.6 kms. In treacherously muuddy conditions and on a twisty course Jonathan Blackledge made a steady start, worked his way up to 3rd at halfway and then finished like a train to get within 1 second of the winner. A gold medal also went his way as Hampshire easily won the team award. Paul Graham placed 48th running for Suffolk. 1 M.Barnes-Smith (Suffolk) 15:15; 2 J.Blackledge (Hants) 15:16; 48 P.Graham (Suffolk).

Steve Sharp was well pleased with this 5 miler on the south coast, taking the opportunity to put several of his 1500 metre rivals behind him and claiming the scalp of Blackheath's Dave Taylor after being subjected to the sight of his back in the two Surrey League races this winter. Dave Anderson showed that his recent foot problem was behind him as he ran to 15th place. 1 R.Denmark (Basildon) 23:18; 6 S.Sharp 23:40; 15 David .Anderson 24:32. Women 1 L.Elliott (Shaftesbury Barnet) 26:31; 7 G.Tamirat 28:07.

18

Reebok Cross Challenge, Margate.

Unaware that Darren Mallin and William Docherty had entered the under 17 event, Jonathan Blackledge went for the under 20 race this time to test himself out over the distance that he will encounter in the schools championship. He had a reasonable run in spite of feeling a little “rough” and then getting caught up in a mêlée at the start. Gradually working his way through, he finished strongly to come in 43rd of the 106 finishers. Of those in front of him, eight were from the Belgian or Dutch national teams, leaving him 35th of the Britons. Bearing in mind some of the runners could have been nearly 2 years older this was not too bad, but he thinks if he had got a 'clean' start and had felt better on the day he could have considerably improved on that placing. Up ahead, Derek Watson came home 24th.

More great running came from Darren and William in the under 17 race where they placed 4th and 12th and there is no doubt that had Jon run in the shorter event instead then the team result would have gone to Belgrave again. They all look forward to teaming up again for the next race in the series to be held in Edinburgh.

Another forceful win came from Windsor’s Sam Haughian in the senior race where Spencer Barden ended up 7th and just out of the reckoning for the European Cross Team. David Anderson was wearing Belgrave colours for the first time but had to come out of the race after a mile and a half due to a foot problem. With Getenesh Tamirat racing in the senior women’s event this was probably our best ever all-round showing in the Reebok series.

Reebok Cross Challenge, Senneleys Park, Birmingham.

Belgrave Under 17 Men - Win Reebok Cross Challenge Team Race.

The soft mud and sharp twists and turns of the Senneleys Park course in Birmingham proved difficult for Jonathan Blackledge who slipped from his 3rd place in the first race of the series to 6th in race two. But while Jonathan suffered a little, William Docherty had a great run to move up to 5th and Darren Mallin placed 7th. The net result was a fine team win for Belgrave with 18 points from Cannock & Stafford, 31, and City of Stoke, 78. Jonathan now lies 3rd overall in the individual points competition. In the Senior/Junior men's race Chris Watson was 19th (3rd Junior home) with twin brother Derek 62nd.

Great North Run Half Marathon, Newcastle to South Shields: Paul Evans might be 40 years old now but shows no sign of letting up in his habit of churning out super road races. In the BUPA Great North Run over the Newcastle to South Shields course the Belgravian took 54 seconds off the previous fastest time by a British veteran. Steve Jones had run 64:09 over this very same route in 1997 but Paul’s 63:15 not only took the record apart – he was first UK runner home yet again. Paul now plans an assault on the World Veterans Marathon Record – currently 2:10:32 set by Mohammed Ezzher of France.

Charles Herrington had a great start and was lying 19th at halfway before running into a bad bout of stitich which had him losing places wholesale.

Jayne Lawrence, racing for the first time since February, and Catherine Eastham both came out at the 5 kms point. Kenya’s Julius Kibet headed the men’s field and in a tight battle to become the first Belgrave man home, Kassa Tadesse just got the better of Paul Evans by three seconds. When was Paul last beaten by a club-mate?

Will Cockerell led the boys home with 2:32:27 (60th) followed by an ecstatic Mal Byansi who took 25 minutes off his best to clock 2:36:25 (95th). On reduced training Mike Kazimierski was satisfied with his 2:37:48 (116th) and Warren Lynch went through the finish in 2:45:02 (262nd) and must have been pretty pleased. World Cross Country Champs., Ostend. Spencer Barden had a super run in Ostend to come home 27th in the World Cross Country Championships 4km race. In extremely wet and muddy conditions he was was first Briton home. Great things were expected of Mark Miles who is reputed to be in terrific form and should have been close to Spencer. Unfortunately for Mark, in the melee at the start with no more than 10 metres of the race gone, someone caught his foot and in an instant his shoe was gone! The remainder of the race was spent struggling to keep going in the swampy conditions. Alex Hutchinson had a fine race in the 12 kms event. He had placed 7th in the Canadian trials but moved into a team slot when another man pulled out. He had a good start and eventually found himself third man home for Canada.

FILA Hastings Half-Marathon. 1 S.Ariga (Kenya) 64:11; 2 P.Evans 64:29. While Belgrave Harriers Treasurer Dave McMillan was completing his 100th half-marathon, up front Paul Evans, nigh on 40 years of age now, was showing no respect to the Kenyans Ariga and Kangogo who had clocked 63:04 and 63:30 in Paris recently. Paul, short on racing, split the Africans after a ferocious battle and claimed the scalps of Barry Royden (Medway) and Nick Francis (Shaftesbury B).

Inter-Counties & World Cross Country Championship Trials, Wollaton Park.

We’ve all known that Spencer Barden has been in great form this winter and in the 4km World Cross Trial he stamped his authority on the classy field to come away with a fine win and a place on the British team for the World Championships in Madrid. Always handily placed near the front, the Belgrave Harrier, entered as a “wild card”, covered all moves and gradually the leading group was whittled down to just the two men – Scotland’s Glen Stewart and Spenny Barden. As the finish neared, Stewart appeared to be throwing everything he could into the battle but there was no answer when Barden switched onto full power; he came home the victor by 5 seconds. Thirty seconds back Kevin Nash had a fine run. It was his first time out in a Scottish vest and he finished as second man home for his adopted country. Early in the race he had extravagantly burst to the front line, apparently giving Spencer a shout as he came past. "Gnasher" subsequently drifted back into the pack but held on well for 14th, putting some good opposition behind him.
