Victory 5 miles, Portsmouth. Heavy cloudbursts overnight and during the morning of the race left the new one lap course flooded in places and although the skies cleared in time for the start, the runners faced some extremely windy conditions. Kenyan William Kirui broke away immediately but his compatriot Benson Matheka looked a little more vulnerable and was chased by the pack which was spearheaded by Steve Sharp. At about half way Steve got up to Matheka’s shoulder but that was just the encouragement that the second placed man needed; he put his head down and charged into the wind leaving the Belgravian to battle agains the elements alone and take comfort from being first ‘Brit’. Steve was pleased with his third position after a disappointing dnf in the Margate International – but not so happy with his time to which the cruel wind had added around 1 minute. Hassan Raidi was our second man home, unaffected by his fasting during Ramadan and Roger Alsop and Bruce Barton completed the team.

Balmoral Road Races. There was a strong Belgrave presence North of the Border for these annual races held in the grounds of the Balmoral estate. Over 4 kms John Mayock outsprinted the Australian Powers for victory but Mark Miles featured strongly, trying hard to bridge the gap to the medal places and looking stronger as the race progressed. Mark was in turn chased hard by Andy Graffin.
In the 5 mile event Allen Graffin took another step or two up the ladder of success, beating Olympic Champion Million Wolde and closing on the Ukranian Lebed as the finish neared. The conditions were blustery so 23:19 for this five miler gives notice of a possible scorcher in Sutton Park in a month’s time.

World Cross Country Champs, Dublin.
Spencer Barden was first of the Belgrave foursome in action. In the 4 kms short course event he started steadily and worked his way through to 39th, 42 seconds down on Ethiopia's latest revelation, the nineteen year-old Bekele. The following day 800 metre runner Chris Watson lined up for the Under 20 8 kms event prior to running what he later described as "the worst race of my life". Chris now looks forward to the summer's two lap events which can only be easy in comparison to this.
Bekele again dominated in the 12 kms event where he became the first man to have won at U20 and senior short and long courses. Allen Graffin continued his progress back to the top by placing 50th, 2nd UK runner to finish. Down the field a bit our old friend Alex Hutchinson was 4th scorer for Canada.

English Schools CC Champs., Chelmsford. The wind was so strong, writes Mike Blackledge, that most of the tapes marking out the course snapped and were flapping about. Jonathan's race was the last of the day, scheduled for 3.35 p.m. The runners had all started to assemble ready for the start when a large marquee near the finish, which was being used as a reclaim area for the runners' kits, collapsed with many people inside. Ambulances, a fire engine and police were called to rescue and treat people and make the area safe.
As a result, the race start was delayed until further notice, which was difficult on the athletes having already got themselves ready for the 'off'. Eventually, the race got underway at 3.55 p.m. but all the team presentations due to be made afterwards were cancelled, which in the end was particularly disappointing for us as Jonathan's Hampshire team were medallists.
Jonathan was bottom age in the Senior Boys category. The race distance was 7.5 km. There were 44 county teams, each eligible to enter 8 runners, of which 301 finished. He had an excellent start and was well in the leading group early on. He then eased off, keeping in mind the longer distance of the race to most he has raced in this year. By half-way he was in 11th place and then gradually started to pick up the pace. He passed Tom Lancashire (the lad judged to have beaten him for 4th spot at Bristol) early in the finishing straight and in a sprint finish crossed the line in the same time as Tom Bedford (Dave's son) but was judged to have finished in 7th place to Tom's 6th. Clearly he was delighted with 7th place at bottom age, especially as he was only 9 seconds out of a medal place.

World Cross Country 4 kms Trial, Newport: The 2001 victor in this event Spencer Barden admitted to "never having really got going" , his preparation in the last two days being hampered by a tooth problem and a trip to the dentist. But he certainly wasn't far away from the front of the field as a fast finish saw a mere 2 seconds covering the first five men home. However, the main objective was qualification for the World Championship short course event and immediately after the race Spencer was duly named as one of the six.

Katsuda 10 kms, Japan.
Back in Japan for a brief period ex-professional triathlete Mike Trees took the opportunity to take part in the 50th Anniversary Katsuda All Japan Road Race series, sanctioned by Ibaraki Prefecture Athletics Association of Japan. Mike’s ultimate goal for the season is to run 10 km in under 30 mins when he turns 40 later this year and looking at this performance with the Belgrave man aged 39 years and 5 months we should say there is a pretty good chance of him doing it.
Well over 5,000 runners took to the road in the 10 km which was held in sunny conditions but with a strong north wind. The flat course always attracts a high quality field looking to run good times and the winner invariably goes under 30 minutes. Although conditions this year were tough due to the strong wind blowing, the times still held up well. Mike takes up the story:
“We went through the 5 km mark in 15:10 and I was in a pack of about 10 runners, on the way back I stayed to the back of the pack to shelter from the wind. However, with about 1km to go I was still feeling strong and hit the front with a long run for home. Unfortunately I was too optimistic as my legs gave out in the last 100 meters and I was pipped on the line by two runners and had to settle for third. I am not too disappointed to lose as I am pleased to be running so well this early in the year”.
The Belgrave club record for veterans stands at 29:25 to Paul Evans.
1 D.Satou 29:56; 3 M.Trees 29:58; 5,285 took part.

CAU Inter-Counties, Nottingham. Now over his hamstring problem Allen Graffin is progressing nicely. Running second to Don Naylor of Thames on Farthing Downs, the Inter-Counties event gave him the chance to move up another gear and he placed 7th on the 9 km course with Naylor getting on for two minutes in arrears.
The Under 20 Men’s race saw twins Chris and Derek Watson well to the fore. They placed 6th and 10th running for Scotland West and took home that powerful start for the team saw them taking home winning team medals.
Also in the team medals was Jonathan Blackledge whose Hampshire outfit gained second place. Jonathan was a bit disappointed with his race. The start was extremely fast and the leader, Tom Humphries, was never headed while anyone who attempted to go with him suffered in the later stages of the race. Both Jonathan and Darren Mallin fell into this category and both of them had trouble trying to pick up the pace – although Jon did manage to hold off Darren in the final 80 metres. The outcome of this was that in the Reebok UK League rankings for the whole season, Darren placed 4th and Jonathan 5th, with just one point separating them.

Reebok Cross Challenge, Bute Park, Cardiff: Running into good form in the New Year, Spencer Barden took the 4 km race by just one second from Cardiff’s Stephenson and Aldershot’s Thompson. In the Under 17 Men’s age group Darren Mallin had a great run to place second which we believe moves him to equal 1st place in the Cross Challenge. Jonathan Blackledge was suffering from a heavy cold but he still made the trip to Cardiff and his 4th place means that he too is very well placed in the overall competition. Unofficially it looks like this: =1 T.Humphries (Cannock & Staffs) and D.Mallin (Belgrave) 56pts; 3 T Lancashire (Bolton) 55; 4 J.Blackledge (Belgrave) 53. With the final race to be run at Nottingham over 6 kms there is every chance that we might see a further improvement in the Belgrave lads’ fortunes.
