Men's Handicap

Women's handicap

Well, we said the handicap might throw up a few anomalies - and it has!

The handicaps were based on performances in the Sutton 10k, Dorking 10 miles, Dysart Dash 10k and Elmbridge 10k. Generally, a runner who did several of these had a similar, and often identical, code for each race. We took the lowest code (best performance) available for each runner.

Of course, there was always the possibility that someone had taken an easy jog in just one of these races resulting in a high handicap code - and then ran to their true ability in the 5k.

Robert Russell of Dorking & Mole Valley romped away with the men's handicap. His handicap code of 25 was based on his Elmbridge 10k run (actual time 47:34), coming back to racing after a long period off through injury. Come the 5k and he really went for it, clocking 19:39 (which would have been worth a handicap code of 16!). The very generous 25 code resulted in him winning the handicap by 50 seconds.

Just as devastating in the women's race was Penny Murphy who was "Gobsmacked!" when she learned of her win: "I've never won anything before." She had a handicap code of 32 from the Dorking '10' but came down to 30 in the Dysart Dash 10k - the code we used. Her run at Wimbledon was worth a code of 24! She's obviously getting fitter - or 5k suits her a lot more than 10 miles.

We ought to point out here that although you'd think that the distance plays a large part and that a runner might be very much better over a longer or shorter distance, generally the codes are very similar whether it's 5k or 10 miles.

Another delighted prize winner was Helene Hill: "What a nice surprise! The Sutton 10k which gave me my handicap was the first race I'd run since before Christmas and I've put in some good training since, so at least it shows that training pays off. I'm not a quick runner and don't usually win prizes, so good to get something for once!"

Obviously we need to check the results. We will leave them as provisional until 31 August, thus allowing anyone to comment, and then award the prize money - £75, £50, £25 to both men and women.

The target handicap time for the 5k was 14:30 for men and 16:45 for women.

Handicap results

Handicap results will not be announced after the race at the presentation as we want to take time to check them thoroughly. Handicap prize winners and results will be posted on this site when we are happy with them. As we have said elsewhere, this is a pilot for a proposed National Handicap Scheme and there may be anomalies, but we will go with the results as generated by this scheme.

Entry on the day

It will help us greatly if you can enter on-line before the day. All you have to do is then collect your number on the day which should be a very quick process. It is also a little cheaper than entering on the day.

However, if you really do want to enter on the day, please download an entry form, complete it beforehand, and have your entry fee ready. This way we can hopefully avoid a long queue. We also suggest that you arrive at Race Registration (upstairs at Belgrave Hall) at around 9am. We'll be there from 08:30am if you want to come earlier.

Entries are still being taken on-line

... but you must collect your race number on the day, before 9:30am.

triandrun Belgrave 5k to be used as pilot for
proposed National Handicap Scheme

Sunday August 13th sees the first holding of the Open triandrun Belgrave 5k - a race taking place around the roads of West Wimbledon and incorporating the Surrey County Championship. The race is sponsored by triandrun who specialize in selling triathlon and running equipment and who have recently opened a shop in Wimbledon and have another in Hainault (www.triandrun.com). In addition to sponsoring the race, triandrun have put up prizes for the open race worth £200 in value and are offering a 10% reduction on running shoes and accessories to all entrants.

The race, promoted by Belgrave Harriers, is also the final event in the Surrey Road League five-race series, and for the first time in the London area the event will feature a handicap using the UKA National Handicap Scheme Endurance Section Piloting Programme.

The proposed National Handicap Scheme, the brain-child of George Bunner of Sportshall fame and John Driscoll, is unique in that a single personal handicap code fixed as a percentage of an agreed national scratch time makes it possible to apply the handicap formula irrespective of the distance over which the race is held. George Bunner tells us, "We have carried out extensive research and trials which have verified the credibility of the concept. Successful piloting series have already been held in Scotland and the North of England."

Because a broad and deep database of road running performances has not yet been set up, the handicap codes for runners in the triandrun Belgrave 5k have been based only upon the results of the four preceding Surrey Road League races - the Dorking 10m, the Sutton 10k, the Dysart Dash 10k and the Elmbridge 10k. Therefore, any runner who has taken part in at least one of the fore mentioned events has been allocated a handicap code and will be in the running to win one of the handicap prizes - £75 for 1st, £50 for 2nd and £25 for 3rd - for both men and women.

Belgrave Harriers have had to keep their plans secret until this time as the penultimate race in the series - the Elmbridge 10k - was only held last weekend. Earlier publication of their intention to produce a handicap result would obviously have allowed runners to "work their handicap" by running one below par performance followed by an all-out effort in the triandrun Belgrave 5k.

In simple terms, as far as the handicap is concerned, if you have run in the Surrey Road League this summer and you run to the best of your ability in the triandrun Belgrave 5k, you stand a chance of winning one of the cash prizes - no matter where you finish in the field.

Remember though that this is a pilot scheme. There may be anomalies but the organizers will go with the handicap result as calculated using the proposed National Handicap Scheme.

The winners of the cash prizes will not be announced immediately after the race as the results team need to ensure that they have done their handicap calculations correctly. Results will be posted on the race website - www.belgraveharriers.com as soon as possible after the event and handicap codes together with a list of those who have entered the race will be posted here soon.
