UK Women's Athletics League Results & Reports 2009: Match 2, Bedford

Survival in the UKWAL is the target!

After two matches

Bedford & County AC

Havering Mayesbrook AC

Thames Valley H

Wigan

Medway & Maidstone

Newham & Essex Beagles

Wakefield

Belgrave H

The team shrank to just eight hardy souls ready to do battle at Bedford. With such a small team there's no doubt that we're on the way down so it's now a matter of damage limitation until injured and pregnant Belles return to the fold.

Once again we managed to cover the required 50% of events in the programme - and thus avoided the automatic drop to the UKWAL qualifying match. The final test will be the third and last match at Wigan. If we can do it again there then Division Four might well be the best level for our team until it can regroup. But if we fail, then we might not survive the qualifying match and it could be Southern League in 2010.

But there's no doubting the fighting spirit of those at the sharp end, with middle distance runners heaving weights, throwers attempting runs and all led by Jodie Favell and Susan Bovill who finished well up in their events.

Come on ladies - you can do it!
