BUPA Great South 10 miles, Southsea
Buoyed up by his recent 48:58 ten miles win at the Cabbage Patch, Paskar Owor was looking for a low 48 run in the BUPA Great South event at Southsea. As a one-time 800 metre man, these ten milers are the furthest he has ever raced.
The opposition was outstanding with the eventual winner Leonard Komon hitting a more than spritely 4 mins 12 secs for the first mile in his quest for a World Best time! Paskar too was over-exuberant with his opening pace, ahead of a pack of Brits including Lemoncello and Overall and still moving forward. It didn't pay off. He was 14:49 at 5k - mid-47 pace - and probably already slowing. At 10k Paskar was suffering and by now overtaken by some he might have hoped to have beaten. He ran home in 51:09 disappointed but having learned an important lesson about the longer distances.
Men. 1 L Komon (Kenya) 46:18; 26 P Owor 51:09.
Women. 1 A Mergia (Ethiopia) 52:55; 41 H Barsham-Rolfe 1:10:42; 117 V Goodwin 1:14:40.
