UK Champs & World Champs Trials, Birmingham
Old favourites continue to dominate at UK Champs
It was in 2002 that Goldie Sayers last failed to win the UK/AAA title and since then she has stood head and shoulders above the rest of the nation's javelin throwers, competing at two Olympic Games, three World Championships (her win here will make it four as long as she keeps healthy), a European Championships, two Commonwealth Games and eight European Cups. Our greatest ever female athlete took the title this time with a margin of around nine metres.
Meanwhile, Dwain Chambers won his fifth national 100m title to book his place on the plane to Daegu, Korea, for the 2011 IAAF World Championships.
At 33 Dwain still has too much speed for the nation's younger stars as he turned on a winning run of 10.09.
“I tell you what, it’s not getting any easier,” said the Belgravian. “I relish the competition because that’s what brings out the best in all of us. It keeps me on my toes. Being among youngsters keeps you optimistic and energetic and at my age I need every ounce of energy I can get.”
As for his chances in Daegu against the top men in the World: “The main thing is I have to keep myself healthy and that’s going to be difficult because we had a new baby girl two nights ago. My duties are going to be double, but hopefully I can repeat my sixth from two years ago.”
Other Belgrave medallists at Birmingham were Greg Beard (3rd in the shot putt) and William Sharman (3rd in the sprint hurdles).
